Co Kildare sees decrease in new car sales compared to last year

Official statistics released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that total new car registrations for the month of March are down 5.6% (16,738) when compared with March 2018 (17,726).

New car registrations year to date are down 10.7% (64,098) on the same period last year (71,760).

The new Commercial Vehicle sector shows a similar picture, with new Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) registrations down 2.2% (3,067) on March 2018 (3,137), and year to date are down 10.7% (11,182). While New Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HGV) saw a slight decline of 1.5% (267) in comparison to March 2018 (271) and year to date down 3.3% (886).

Imported Used Cars on the other hand increased by 9.98% (8,970) on March 2018 (8,156) and year to date are 2.74% (26,832) ahead of 2018 (26,117).

New electric vehicle registrations continue to grow with a total of 1,437 EV cars registered so far this year, this has surpassed the total number of EVs registered for the whole of 2018 (1,233).

Commenting on the registrations Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General Designate said:“While new car sales are being dampened by Brexit uncertainty, the increase in VRT on new cars for 2019, arising from the fact that no allowance was made for the first step in the move to the new WLTP emissions testing regime, has also had a negative impact.  Ireland is the only country in the EU that has sought to charge consumers higher registration taxes due to the improved emissions testing regime. While the VRT increases in this first phase of the transition to the WLTP test figures only saw an average increase of 5% in the CO2 values, the second phase next year will see these increasing by a further 21%. All other Member States have followed the EU Commission view that consumers should not be faced with increased taxation due to the improved emissions testing regime. SIMI had warned that not adjusting for such large increases in CO2 values will burden the consumer, damage new car sales and will actually reduce State revenues. This has been the case as the decrease in new cars sales in Q1 has meant that the State’s tax revenues from new cars have fallen by more than €60 million so far this year, and this shortfall is only going to increase as the year progresses."

Mr Cooke said: "While current low volumes in the new car market have largely resulted from lower used car values for consumers’ trade-ins due to the huge volume of used car imports from the UK due to the Brexit-driven Sterling exchange rate.  To add a tax increase that only applies to new cars, in such circumstances can only lead to the current result. We urge the Government to take account of the impact of increasing taxes, not just on new car sales but also on employment in the Motor Industry across the country, and on the environment when recasting VRT and other motor related taxes in 2020. There is one positive within the new car market, electric car registrations have now surpassed the total number of electric cars registered for the whole of 2018 and we would expect to see this sector continue to grow.”

Rents in Co Kildare surge by over €1,000 per year

$

0

According to the latest Rent Index from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), in the October-December period (Q4) of 2018, the standardised national average rent of tenancies in County Kildare was €1,162 up from €1,127 (+€35) one year earlier and down €44 on the previous quarter (Q3 2018).

The standardised national average rent was €1,134 per month, up from €1,061 one year earlier (€73 increase). Conversely, on a quarter-on-quarter basis, rental price inflation dropped from 2.3% in Q3 2018, down to - 0.3% in Q4 2018. This marks the first quarter since Q1 2017 that the standardised average rent has fallen relative to the previous quarter.

The RTB Rent Index, which is compiled in conjunction with theEconomic and Social Institute(ESRI), is the authoritative guide to the Irish rental market. It is based on actual rents paid on 17,830 tenancies registered with the RTB in the quarter.

Based on the rental data of the latest Rent Index, two additional LEAs meet the designation criteria for rent pressure zones; Navan in County Meath and Limerick City East. The RTB have confirmed to the Minster that these two LEAs meet the RPZ criteria. Following designation as an RPZ, rent increases in these areas are limited to a maximum rent increase of 4% per annum.

Commenting on the latest Rent Index results, Rosalind Carroll, Director of the Residential Tenancies Board said;“The Rent Index has now provided us with important data that enables a decision to be taken on designating two new Rent Pressure Zones to be set for the Local Electoral Areas of Limerick City East and Navan. These are the first Rent Pressure Zones to be designated since September 2017. This is important for landlords and tenants as it means that rents in these Local Electoral Areas will be limited to rises of a maximum of 4% annually. This should help moderate rents in these areas. We would encourage both landlords and tenants to contact us for more information on their rights and obligations and we will be rolling out a targeted information campaign in these areas over the coming weeks."

Ms Carroll said: "Looking back over the 2018 year, we have seen another year with continued pressures in the market and continued rent inflation, with rents now 15% higher nationally than the peak in 2007, and 25% higher in the Dublin market. We have seen some moderation in the market in the last two quarters, we would hope with more supply coming on stream and the RTB getting more regulatory powers that we will see further easing of rent inflation in 2019”

The Dublin Market and the Cities

Dublin’s rental market continues to be the largest in the country in Q4 2018, accounting for nearly two-in-five new tenancies that were registered with the RTB. The standardised average rent in Dublin stood at €1,650, up from €1,530 one year earlier. This represents a 7.8% annual increase in rent in the capital. However, the standard average rent was slightly lower in quarter 4 compared to quarter 3, going from €1663 to €1650

Elsewhere in country, the second highest standardised average rents in Q4 2018 were in Cork City at €1,095 per month. Galway City standardised average rents stood at €1,064 for Q4 2018, rents in Limerick City were €929 and rents in Waterford City were €682.

New versus Renewal tenancies

  • The standardised average rent for new tenancies was €1,237 per month as compared to €987 for further Part 4 renewals.
  • The year on year change was faster for new tenancies compared to tenancies being renewed and re-registered with the RTB.

Market insights

  • The acute price pressures in Dublin are clearly evidenced with just over 10% of tenancies agreed at less than €1,000 per month as compared to 75% elsewhere.
  • There are also major differences in the type of properties being rented across the different regions. In Dublin, apartments or flats make-up over 70% of the rental market in comparison to 43% in the Greater Dublin Authority and 35% in the rest of the country.

Greater Dublin Area (Meath, Kildare, Wicklow)

  • While the level of rents in the GDA (excluding Dublin) are not as high as in Dublin, as of Q4 2018, the standardised average rent for the GDA (excluding Dublin) stood at €1,167 up from €1,108 the previous year.
  • The quarter-on-quarter growth rate in the GDA (excluding Dublin) was 0.7% in Q4 2018, a deceleration of 2.3% from Q3 2018. On a year-on-year basis, GDA (excluding Dublin) rents were up 5.3%.

Rest of the country

  • The standardised average rent for outside the GDA stood at €833 in Q4 2018, up from €789 the previous year.
  • The quarter-on-quarter growth rate for the rest of the country was -3.8% in Q4 2018. On a year-on-year basis, rents outside the GDA were up 5.5%.

Clane Gardaí appealing for CCTV or dashcam footage following arson incident in which fire was set to family's hedges near Hatter's Cross

Gardaí in Clane are appealing for information following a terrifying arson incident last Thursday, 28 March, when fire was set to hedgerow at a home near Hatter's Cross with a family inside at the time.

The mother of two young children said that the incident was 'absolutely terrifying' for the family, with their two young children and mother in law in the house at the time of the incident with at least €1,500 worth of damage caused to the property.

The family is now appealing to KildareNow readers who may have been in the area last Thursday, March 28, to help Gardaí with their investigations by coming forward with any CCTV or dash-cam footage that they may have.

The incident took place around 6pm on Thursday last

The fire could be seen by passerby

The hedgerow surrounding the property was destroyed by the fire

“It’s on the back road at Hatter's Cross heading towards Carragh GAA and it's a busy road. A lot of people would have driven past and Gardaí are appealing for any footage-CCTV or dashcam and anyone who was in the area at the time and might have seen something to come forward. Someone must have seen who did this to our home,"the mother told KildareNow.

"They could have killed us as the hedge surrounds our house. A family member is seriously ill at the moment, and this has really upset him and all of us. We have just installed new gates and it’s ruined the electrics and will cost at least €1,500 to fix. The children were terrified and we are afraid to sleep at night because we're afraid they could come back," she said.

Clane Gardaí confirmed they received an emergency call last Thursday night after 6pm, and that Maynooth Fire Services attended the scene. Gardaí have said that investigations into theincident are currently ongoing.

They said:“We are appealing for witnesses to this incident. A hedge row, extensive cabling and an intercom system were damaged in the incident and we are investigating the motive behind it. If anyone has any information regarding this, please contact Clane Garda Station at 045 868 262”.

Lidl said it wants to install a massive 4,364 solar panels on the roof of its 54,000 m² distribution centre on the outskirts of Newbridge.

Subject to planning permission, the panels will produce 1,011,929 kilowatt hours of energy a year - enough  for 240 homes.

As a result the warehouse will see its carbon output reduced by some 473 tonnes annually.

Alan Barry of Lidl said: "We take our responsibilities in the area of sustainability very seriously and this photo-voltaic installation project allows us to continue to reduce our carbon output while also allowing us to save on energy costs, so it's a win-win.

"We will continue to invest significantly in solar panels across our entire store network in 2019 with 1 million already committed for installations at 8 Lidl stores in 2019.

Lidl is working with Co Waterford firm, Enerpower, in delivering this project.

The discount retailer recently said it would provide the largest network of electric vehicle chargers in the Irish supermarket sector, enabling customers to charge their electric vehicles free of charge whilst they shop.

Lidl currently provides management teams with electric carpooling vehicles for business trips.

More than 2 burglaries every day in Kildare in 2018 according to new PhoneWatch report

$
0
0

PhoneWatch has welcomed the significant fall in burglaries in 2018 and Co Kildare experienced a sharp drop in the rate of burglaries in 2018 with a 24% decrease.

According to PhoneWatch this significant fall coincides with an increase in the number of households opting for monitored alarm systems and indicates householders are paying heed of the warnings, being vigilant and taking sensible precautions.

PhoneWatch conducted a detailed analysis of the CSO Recorded Crime Statistics released last week and issued the PhoneWatch 2018 Kildare Burglary Report. Key findings include:

  • A total of 905 burglaries were reported in Kildare in 2018
  • Over 2 burglaries takes place in Kildare  every day
  • This was a 24% fall compared to 2017 well above  the national average of 11.5%
  • Naas Garda Station was Kildare’s busiest station with 180
  • While Castledermot station was the quietist last year
  • Homes with a monitored burglar alarm are four times safer than those without

PhoneWatch also issued an online Burglary Tracker, an interactive map that allows homeowners view the burglary stats for their area and county. This can be viewed online at PhoneWatch.ie/crimestats.

Speaking about the figures, Eoin Dunne, Managing Director of PhoneWatch said: "This significant decrease in the rate of burglary is extremely welcome, and it is very positive to see that after an increase in 2017 the rate fell once again last year. However burglary remains unfortunately all too common and should highlight to every householder the importance of taking sensible security precautions on a daily basis."

“A monitored alarm continues to be among the most effective ways to protect homes. In the last year there was a 19% fall in the number of incidents involving PhoneWatch customers, a trend that has continued in recent years as our alarm technology and instant monitoring continue to act as a significant, and highly effective, deterrent to potential burglars. The statistics show that a PhoneWatch home is a safer home and is four times less likely to be a victim of burglary," he said.

“Ultimately protecting your home is about doing the basics consistently so that you don’t leave your home vulnerable. This includes, locking windows and doors, especially when you leave the house. Making sure your home is well lit and appears occupied, particularly between 5 and 11pm when burglary is most common. Not leaving garden equipment lying around, with ladders the most important to secure. Avoiding updates on Social media, such as Facebook, about your plans."

A decision about providing new court facilities in North Kildare will be made at a meeting in June, local Labour general election candidate Emmet Stagg has said.

The Kilcock District Court Area covers Maynooth, Kilcock, Straffan, Rathcoffey and a large part of West Kildare.

Since September 2016, all Kilcock District Court Cases have been heard in Naas District Court.

Kilcock Court was to originally due to reopen in November 2016, but major issues with the building have meant it has remained closed.

Last March the Minister indicated that a review of the future delivery of court services in the District Court area of Kilcock would be held.

The Minister has now advised Mr Stagg that the review of the future delivery of court services in the District Court area of Kilcock is in its final stages.

Consultation has already taken place with the relevant stakeholders including solicitors the Irish Prison Service, An Garda Síochána and members of the Judiciary.

The Minister further advised Mr  Stagg that the Courts Service has advised that details and costing of works that would be required to repair Kilcock Courthouse have been received from the Office of Public Works and that a report was considered by the Courts Service Building Committee on 19 March. Following this a further consultation with relevant stakeholders will now be carried out.

A a decision in relation to the closure of a Court venue is a matter for Courts Service Board and that it is expected that a report will be brought to the Board at its meeting in June 2019 when the consultation process has been completed.

Mr Stagg reiterated the need for the delivery of District Court services locally.
