Diversions on the M7 were due to end at 6am this morning between Junction 9 (Naas North) and Junction 10 (Naas South).

A temporary 25km per hour diversion had been in place to facilitate the demolition of an overbridge as part of the Osberstown Interchange (Junction 9a).

Demolition works progressed quicker than expected and were completed 24 hours ahead of schedule.

Dry and bright weather conditions helped to speed up the operation.

Heavier than normal traffic is expected on the M7 today due to GAA fans travelling from Limerick, Waterford and Kerry for National League finals in Croke Park.

Shoppers will also be travelling to and from a Private Sale event at Kildare Village.

Kildare Co Council said: "M7 bridge demolition works were expedited through Friday night and all day Saturday without any issues or delays encountered.

"Motorway now to be reopened by 6am Sunday morning and well in advance of the original scheduled timeframe."

HT score Kildare 7.09    Laois 0.02

FT score Kildare 16.21    Laois. 0.04

By Donal Fitzpatrick, LGFA PRO

Laois were dealt a blow during the week where they lost a number of their starting team resulting from injuries incurred at school’ basketball; this left them fielding a much weaker side from the team that had played Kildare in the Round Robin stages of the competition.

Kildare were able to field at full strength and unfortunately, for the home side, turned in a very dominant display on the day. Kildare led well at the break and could have had more scores on the board only for the brilliant goalkeeping of Emma Ramsbottom, her bravery and shot stopping were much to be admired as she frustrated Kildare Forwards at times with her heroics. She is definitely a player to watch out for in future Laois teams. HT Kildare 7.09 to Laois 0.02

Laois could only double their tally in the second period with points from Áine Costigan and Tara Byrne. Both sides made tram changes throughout the half but it was the visitors’ replacements that stood tall and helped their side win out comprehensively on a fulltime score of Kildare 16.21 to the home side’s low score of 0.04.

Kildare will play Westmeath in the Leinster B final on April 12 with venue and time TBC. Westmeath defeated Wexford in the days other semi final in what was a closer contest on a fulltime score of Wexford 1.07 Westmeath 1.08

Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2019 announced its Senior winners at the Fresh Film Festival 2019 in Limerick on Thursday, March 28 last. The competition, which received a record of more than 1700 entries this year, announced the winners at the Odeon Castletroy.

Kildare’s Young Filmmakers and Playacting Youth Theatre won the Gradam TG4 do Scannan sa Ghaeilge Award at Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2019 for their film ‘An Fainne’, which follows the story of a vulnerable girl who is put under pressure at her job.

Speaking about their win was 18 year old director of ‘An Fainne’ Athena Fusciardi from Lodgepark, who said

“I’m so happy that our movie won an award! I worked really hard and it really paid off. I would encourage anyone interested in film to enter next year as it’s a great opportunity and encourages young people to make films”.

Other films entered into Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2019 from Kildare filmmakers included ‘A Day in Life’ by Ben Hatton Walsh from Scoil Dara, which aims to teach how the smallest of gestures can change someone’s day and outlook, ‘Just a Friend’ by Liam Boland of Kildare Young Filmmakers, in which a girl makes a friend online, ‘I Don’t Know’ by Molly Hoche from Playacting Youth Theatre, in which two girls are faced with a really difficult decision, and ‘24 hour Schoolday’ by Liam Boland, in which a student's who’s stressed from all their school work gets tired of the continuous pile of work to do.

14-year-old Sean Tracy from Ashford in Wicklow, took home the title of Ireland’s Young Senior Filmmaker of the year 2019 for his short film ‘Rue’, a story about a boy who regrets his last words to his best friend. Speaking about his win, said, “To win here today is an absolute honour, especially considering the quality of the films that were entered! I think this year's films are the highest quality that Fresh Film has ever received. They were all absolutely outstanding and any of them could have placed first. I am really honoured and chuffed that it was this film that won. It's one the actors and I worked really hard on, I couldn't have done it without them, and they were amazing. I can't thank Fresh Film Festival enough for organising the whole event, it was just fantastic!”

Cal Arnold O’Driscoll, aged 16 from Dublin 7 was the second place winner for his film ‘Big Bad World’, in which two Irish teens from the 90’s finally break the rules by going on their very own vacation. Milosh Hughes, aged 18 from Malahide in Dublin took home third place for his film ‘Descensus’, in which a young boy loses his grip on reality as constant nightmares cause him to spiral into madness.

Other entries received Highly Commended Awards on the day, including Pippa Molony aged 18 from Dublin 15 for Story for her film ‘Hero’, Oisin McKeogh, aged 18 from Killaloe, Clare for Direction for his film ‘Ode to a Dancer’, and Reuben Harvey, aged 19, from Abbeyleix in Laois, for Performance for his film ‘Radioheads/Picture This’. Reuben Harvey also won the Audience Awards on the day for his film ‘Picture This’, which follows two idiots who enter into an Irish short film festival but struggle to come up with a good idea.

Vigga Wagner, from Denmark won the International Film Award for her film Bubblehead which follows a girl who lives a solitary life with her pet fish that meets a cute boy when she visits the pet shop after her goldfish dies.

In addition to the Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year awards, a number of specialist awards were presented on the day including Ryan Connolly, aged 18 from Aquinas Grammar School in Down whose film ‘Contact’ took home the Boulder Media Award for animation and Milosh Hughes, aged 18 from Malahide in Dublin, whose film ‘Zwei’ won the RTÉ 60 Second Award. Additionally, Athena Fusciardi, aged 18 from Lodgepark, Kildare, won the Gradam TG4 do Scannan sa Ghaeilge Award for the best film in the Irish Language for her film ‘An Fainne’, while Mount Mercy College from Cork won the Radharc Senior Award for their film ‘Mother Nature knows Breast’, which is a documentary about low breastfeeding rates in Ireland.

Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year is the highlight of Limerick’s Fresh Film Festival, which is now in its 23rd year. Other highlights of Fresh Film Festival 2019 include feature screenings and workshops including an Industry Master class with The National Youth Film School.

Fresh Film Festival encourages young people from Ireland and overseas, aged 7 to 18 years, to create, exhibit and share films.  The festival provides an opportunity for these young filmmakers to have their work seen on a cinema screen for the first time and to compete for the title of Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year.  All films submitted are also considered for a range of Specialist Awards including the Radharc Trust Award (documentary), the Boulder Media Animation Award, the RTE 60 Second Short Film Award and the RTE Factual Award, in addition to the International and Audience awards.

“Ireland’s Young Filmmaker have a very interesting approach” says Jayne Foley, Director of Fresh Film Festival. “Storytelling is at the core” she says, “because the budget is usually either low or non-existent, filmmakers have to be very inventive with plot and location.”

This year the festival received over 1700 films into its three categories Junior, Senior and International. Jayne adds, “The festival is a forum where young film-makers can meet each other. Even at that stage networking is important. You may end up meeting the same people again later in your career. As advocates of young filmmaking, we also try to showcase films abroad. We’ve brought Irish films and young filmmakers to Korea, Austria, Germany and Edinburgh. This year we are excited to have a number of international young filmmakers coming to Fresh and sharing their filmmaking experience with us.”

Wanted UK sex offender sleeping rough in car being monitored by Newbridge Gardaí

A UK sex offender wanted by Manchester police, who is sleeping rough his car, is being monitored by Newbridge Gardai, it has emerged.

Gardai are powerless to arrest him until they receive an official European Arrest Warrant from UK police.

The man appeared before Naas District Court on Thursday last charged with failing to register as a sex offender.

He was then ordered to sign on twice daily at Newbridge Garda Station.

Officers will be closely monitoring him until the European Arrest Warrant arrives from the UK - and then the path will be cleared for him to be arrested and extradited.

Naas District Court heard that the accused is facing a charge of breaching the Sex Offenders Act, 2001 for failing to notify Gardai he had entered the jurisdiction.

Garda evidence outlined how the accused was found guilty of being in possession of 'extreme images of children in Wales and Scotland.'

The court heard how he travelled from the UK to Co Kildare and he did not notify Gardaí.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "How do people with such serious convictions end up here?"

He added: "The State has to answer questions."

Garda evidence heard how when the Gardaí turned up at the property he was renting, his landlord directed him to leave.

The Garda said: "The landlord told him to leave, two weeks ago, he has not had time to get accommodation."

Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered Gardaí to 'keep an eye on him.'

The court heard that he is signing on to Newbridge Garda Station as part of his bail conditions.

Judge Zaidan ordered that he appear again before Naas District Court within eight weeks for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Manchester Police issued an alert last year that they were searching for him after breaching a court order last November.

He was released from prison in October 2014 after being jailed in 2013 for possessing indecent images of children.

Facebook's strict new rules on political ads are welcome - TD

$
0
0

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Science, Technology, Research and Development James Lawless TD has welcomed Facebook’s tightening of advertising regulations ahead of the EU elections in May.

Deputy Lawless, who has been calling for greater transparency across all social media platforms since his election to Dáil Éireann, said it is time other social media giants followed suit and sought to protect the democratic process from those who wish to undermine it.

Facebook’s new regulations will require anyone running political adverts related to the elections to provide proof that they are in the country where the ads will be targeting users.

Ads will also have to carry a label outlining who has paid for them and what their contact details are.

Mr Lawless said: “While researching for my Online Advertising and Social Media (Transparency) Bill I uncovered more than 30 offences under the existing Electoral Acts for all kinds of offline campaigning. The same rules do not apply to online advertising leaving it wide open to interference and abuse.

“Having met with officials from Facebook on various occasions I conveyed to them my concerns that social media, in particular in the run up to the European elections, could be manipulated by those with sinister motives. EU elections are a likely target for interference from malevolent states and agencies due to their geo-political importance. The typically low voter turnout also make them more vulnerable.

“I would like to see the Government progress my Bill with greater urgency and ahead of the EU elections in May. While Facebook has now taken steps to protect the integrity of the electoral process across the EU, we must take responsibility in Ireland for our own system and my Bill seeks to do just that”, concluded Deputy Lawless.

Moorefield maintain local bragging rights with deserved League victory over Sarsfields

Moorefield 1-14

Sarsfields 1-9

EMS Copier Senior Football League Division 1 Round 2

Moorefield made it two wins from two in the Senior Football League with a five point victory over Sarsfields.

The final scoreline flatters Sarsfields as the County Champions were the more dominant team for the vast majority of the contest with just a late rally from Davy Burke’s side putting a little bit of respectability on the scoreline.

Moorefield had their Kildare contingent back on board and they all had fine games but James Murray who was recently announced as the Moores captain for the year was absolutely immense as he showed great leadership.

Both Adam Tyrrell and Eanna O’Connor scored five points apiece for the victors while Ciaran Kelly bagged a second half goal to make sure of the result.

Sarsfields were never able to match the intensity and skill of their opponents but they can at least go away with a bit of confidence as they kicked 1-3 in the last few minutes.

It was a tight and tetchy beginning to the game before Adam Tyrrell converted a free in the 7th minute to give Moorefield the lead.

Sarsfields soon hit back with a Ray Cahill 45 but they went scoreless for ten minutes with Moorefield taking control.

Tyrrell had a fine game and he kicked his first point from play to help Moorefield retake the lead before the advantage was then extended with scores from Ciaran Kelly and Eanna O’Connor.

Sarsfields responded with a Cahill free but they then suffered a blow when Cian Costigan who was so effective against Athy went off injured with a hamstring knock.

O’Connor and Tyrrell then stood out for the rest of the half and they shared a trio of points as Moorefield went into the break with a commanding six point lead.

Sarsfields brought in Caoimhin McDonnell and Conor Hartley at half-time and they made the better start to the second period with Cahill landing a free.

Tyrrell replied with his own free for Moorefield before Darragh Ryan got Sarsfields’s first effort from play with a well taken score from out the field.

That left the Sash with an five point deficit but Moorefield practically put the game beyond reach in the 40th minute when Ciaran Kelly kicked in a goal after Eanna O’Connor fed the centre forward on the back of a Mark McDermott ball inside.

Moorefield were rampant at that stage and Tyrrell also went close with a goal chance when he pulled a shot wide.

The teams then exchanged scores with a pair of Cahill frees being cancelled out by efforts from O’Connor and McDermott as Moorefield opened up a 1-11 to 0-6 lead entering the final ten minutes.

Tyrrell and James Murray were arguably Moorefield’s best players on the day and they kicked further points as things looked all too easy for Ross Glavin’s team.

To their credit Sarsfields did finish well though with points from Cahill, Barry Coffey and Cian McConnell coming on the back of a well taken goal from Matty Byrne.

Sarsfields got back to within four points and they had a few chances to get closer but Moorefield were much the better side and Evan O’Brien rounded off the victory with a late score.

Moorefield: Ian McDonnell; Sean Dempsey, Liam Healy, Mark Dempsey, Kevin Murnaghan, Sean Healy, James Murray 0-1, Aaron Masterson, Adam Sweeney, Anthony Durney, Ciaran Kelly 1-1, Eamonn Callaghan, Jason Phillips, Adam Tyrrell 0-5 (0-1f), Eanna O’Connor 0-5 (0-3fs).

Subs used: Mark McDermott 0-1 for Callaghan 36 mins, Ronan Sweeney for Phillips 44 mins, Evan O’Brien 0-1 for Kelly 46 mins, Ryan Moore for L.Healy 48 mins, Niall Hurley Lynch for O’Connor 52 mins, Daire Dunne for A.Sweeney 55 mins.

Sarsfields; John Melia; Eoin Leavy, Tom Aspell, Alan Scully, Brian McDonnell, Shea Ryan, Con Kavanagh, Matty Byrne 1-0, Dean Domican, Cian McQuillian, Darragh Ryan 0-1, Robbie Confrey, Ray Cahill 0-6 (0-4fs, 0-1 45), Cian Costigan, Karl Hartley.

Subs used: Shane Doyle for Costigan 20 mins, Barry Coffey 0-1 for Scully 20 mins, Conor Hartley for McQuillan h-t, Caoimhin McDonnell for Domican h-t, Cian McConnell 0-1 for Confrey 40 mins, David Shalvey for S.Ryan 55 mins.

Cheap imports, fast fashion and our “throwaway” culture were identified by survey respondents as the most negative trends impacting on the design industry.  On a more positive note, respondents predicted sustainability will play a key role in purchasing decisions in the coming years, pointing to increased demand for responsible design, biophilic design, and locally-sourced and handcrafted products.

A growth in public appreciation for quality design was also highlighted as a positive, with respondents citing the continued popularity of interiors-focused media programmes, outlets and events – and their impact on public perceptions of design.

house is organised by Independent News & Media (INM), publisher of Ireland’s largest newspaper titles and digital channels.

Commenting today, Cliona Carroll, Sponsorship and Events Manager at INM, said: “The trends highlighted in our industry survey are reflected in the programme for house 2019.  We’ll have a dedicated upcycling space and a focus on sustainability across all stages, and – as usual – our exhibitors will include the best Irish designers, manufacturers and retail brands A new feature at house 2019 will be Made For You, a dedicated area for craftworkers and designer-makers to exhibit artistic products.  Visitors will find everything from the functional to the strictly decorative, such as lamps, candles, mirrors, furniture, glassware, decorative arts and much more."

She added: "House always attracts range of people from right across Ireland who may be interested in interior design, doing up a room or working on a refurbishment project or simply want to enjoy a day out. We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from Kildare and beyond again this year.”

Kildare boxers reign supreme on live TV at the National Stadium

It was a night to remember for Kildare boxers at the National Stadium last weekend.

Veteran Eric 'Lilywhite Lightning' Donovan claimed the Irish Featherweight title after an impressive fourth round victory over Stephen McAfee.

Also in action were the Phelan siblings from St Brigid's Boxing Club in Kildare Town.

The event was broadcast live on TG4 in association with Assassin Boxing and Boxing Ireland Promotions.

All eleven fights were broadcast live on the TG4 YouTube page with live TV coverage featuring Donovan and the two Phelans from 8.30pm to 11.30pm.
