A man in his mid 30s has been arrested after a 40-minute pursuit between Dublin and Kildare early this morning.

It is believed the man had damaged a house in Tallaght with a car, prompting a 999 call at around 2.15am, RTE is reporting.

Gardaí later discovered the man driving nearby and tried to arrest him.

However he failed to stop and this resulted in a 40-minute pursuit, ending in Kildare.

During the chase the man rammed a garda car outside Emo village in Co. Laois. No one was injured in the incident.

The driver is being detained for questioning at Tallaght Garda Station.

Leading jockey and Kildare native Fran Berry has announced his retirement after 23 years in the saddle.

Berry (38) said he made the decision after consulting with his surgeon regarding spinal injuries suffered in an incident at Wolverhampton on January 29 this year.

Due to the medical advice, he will call time on a fantastic career with immediate effect and focus on work in the media.

Berry said: "Whilst this news is heartbreaking on one level, I am fully aware how lucky I am.

"Riding has been a fantastic adventure for me and I am very grateful for the way it allowed my family and I to experience the world and gain many friends over that time.

"Sincere thanks to my sponsors Sky Bet, Sporting Life and all the trainers, owners, agents, stable staff, doctors and physios who have helped me along the way in the UK, Ireland and Japan.

"To my family, Laura, Jordan, Emma Jane for believing in me, Dad, Mum, Alan and our friends for all their support and sacrifices that they made for me over that time."

Berry won his first major race at just 18 - the Coral Cup in the 1999 Cheltenham Festival.

He later concentrated on the Flat, becoming second jockey to Mick Kinane at John Oxx’s stable before taking over as leading jockey for Oxx in 2010.

In September 2010 he enjoyed a Group One winner on the Jessica Harrington-trained champion two-year-old Pathfork in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh, where he beat Casamento and Zoffany.

Berry went on to enjoy more high-profile success on Dragon Pulse, also for Harrington, and the Richard Hannon-trained Kool Kompany, who took the Group Two Railway Stakes in 2014.

In 2016 the County Kildare-born rider moved to Britain to become stable jockey for Ralph Beckett before leaving by mutual consent to work as a freelance.

Berry spent six winters in Japan where he rode 79 winners, including 19 Listed/Group races.

Berry’s international experience also includes a two-month spell in Singapore during 2010, where he rode four winners at Kranji, and the inaugural 2018 International Jockeys Challenge.

Unusual garden visitor is spotted hunting for prey in garden in Allenwood

A garden in Allenwood in Co Kildare received an unusual visitor yesterday in the form of a sparrowhawk.

A reader has sent KildareNow a photograph of the bird of prey which was spotted in her back garden in Allenwood yesterday.

"He had a pigeon in his claws , my first time seeing one up close in my garden in Allenwood," said the reader.

The bird is believed to be a sparrowhawk which hunts pigeons and other smaller birds

In recent years, various birds of prey including sparrowhawks, buzzards, falcons and kestrels have been sighted around Co Kildare.

The Sparrowhawk (An Spioróg) is the most likely to hunt other smaller birds, with female sparrowhawks able to catch prey up to the size of a woodpigeon. According to BirdsWatchIreland, the sparrowhawk is a small bird of prey (raptor) with broad wings with blunt wing tips and a long tail.

It has a small hooked bill suitable for eating meat and its tail is banded in all plumages with four or five bands. The sexes are different in size, the female is larger than the male. Sparrowhawks have barred underparts in all plumages, with the barring extending across the underwings, breast, belly and flanks.

Males are bluish-grey above and often have orangey-brown barring on the breast, belly and underwing coverts; the rest of the barring is brown. Females are grey above with brown-grey barring on the underparts.

The Kestrel (An Pocaire Gaoithe) is a type of falcon and is usually seen in the countrysid and it searches the vegetation for slugs, beetles, frogs, mice and other small animals. Kestrels are described as

Once almost extinct in Ireland, the magnificent Buzzard (An Clamhán) is the other bird of prey now regularly seen around North Kildare.

FET learners from Kildare and Wicklow have their voices heard at National FET Learner Forum in Naas

66 learners from Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board (KWETB) convened at a regional meeting of the National Further Education and Training (FET) Learner Forum recently.

The meeting took place at the Killashee Hotel in Naas and involved learners from a variety of FET courses offered by KWETB.

The National FET Learner Forum is a collaborative effort between AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation; SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority; and Education and Training Boards (ETBs). This meeting was one of a series of regional meetings that will take place across the country this year.

Ireland is leading the way in making a commitment to learner voice with the establishment of a National FET Learner Forum. As a learner-centred form of provision, SOLAS is striving to make Further Education and Training (FET) responsive to learner needs.

This Forum acts as a way for learners to directly influence FET provision. Their suggestions for improvement will result in a clear outline of recommendations which AONTAS will share directly with policy makers and ETBs.

Speaking about today's Forum, Niamh O’Reilly, CEO of AONTAS, said: “The Forum provides FET learners from Kildare and Wicklow with the opportunity to have their voices heard, and to help shape further education at local, regional and national level. AONTAS believes that learners are experts of their own learning, they can identify what is working and what improvements are needed to ensure learner success, retention and progression. We look forward to using the deliberations from the Forum in supporting SOLAS and ETBs in creating a world-class FET system that is learner-centred.”

Deirdre Keyes, Chief Executive of KWETB welcomed the opportunity for FET learners to contribute to the development of national FET policy. She said: “KWETB recognises the importance of the learner voice in informing the development of both local and national FET policy. I am particularly pleased that so many of our learners, from a broad range of programmes and local areas within Kildare and Wicklow, participated so effectively in this regional forum. Our learners and staff are committed to ensuring that the highest quality FET is provided within our ETB and I welcome the opportunity provided by SOLAS and AONTAS to our leaners today. ”

If you are thinking of going back to education further information on AONTAS can be found here: www.aontas.com or you can call AONTAS on 1800 303 669 or check out the range of programmes available in Kildare and Wicklow ETB at: http://kildarewicklow.etb.ie/ and on https://www.fetchcourses.ie

Farmer objecting again to Intel's proposed plant 4 times the size of Whitewater Shopping Centre

$

0

A local farmer who has been a thorn in the side of Intel over several years has objected again to the latest plans of the multi-national.

In a two-page objection to Kildare Co Council which is scribbled on notepaper,  Reid claims that the Leixlip-based micro chip maker's new planning application "is contrary to the proper planning and development" of the area.

The massive planning application for a 110 square metre plant - potentially leading to thousands of jobs - was lodged on February 1.  On March 28th last the Council requested further information from Intel on the proposals.

The massive planning file on the application already contains up to 200 documents.

Last year a documentary was released in cinemas about Reid, who has objected to about half a dozen Intel applications over the course of the past decade.

The film - The Lonely Battle of Thomas Reid - was screened at the Dublin International Film Festival and also shown in Kildare cinemas.

In 2015, Reid (57) won a Supreme Court appeal against a decision by the High Court to allow the IDA to compulsorily acquire land he and his family had worked for more than a century.

He sued the IDA and the State after an order was granted permitting the development agency to acquire the 72-acre property, which includes a farm and the Reid family home, Hedsor House.

The house and farm has been in Thomas' family for more than 100 years since it was first acquired by his grandfather Thomas in the early 1900s.

Former Labour TD and local election candidate Emmet Stagg has lodged a submission in favour of the Intel application as he said he believed it will grow the local economy and create employment.

Proposed expansion

In February, after months of speculation, Intel announced plans to significantly increase capacity at it Leixlip plant.

The micro chip giant submitted a planning application for a 110,0000 square metre factory.

The planned facility is set to be almost twice the size of Dundrum Town Centre.

Intel already has separate planning approval from 2017 for a 90,000 square metre plant at its site.

Major investment

The investment in a new facility of this size could run into billions of euro over several years and involve up to 5,000 construction jobs and hundreds of contracted and permanent staff.

Intel has seen an increased demand for its products due to the booming gaming industry across the globe and a positive business climate in some overseas markets.
There are already around 4,000 people employed at the Leixlip plant, which was first established in 1989.

Intel has invested almost $14 billion dollars in Ireland since the late 1980s.

Over 100 people in Kildare are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year says Irish Cancer Society as it launches online bowel checker

$
0
0
Looking after your bowel health can save your life, the Irish Cancer Society has said, as new figures show that the number of people in Ireland diagnosed with bowel cancer is set to double by 2045.
The Society is encouraging people in Kildare to check their bowel health by using their online bowel health checker.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month takes place this April. This year it is estimated that up to 2,800 people, including over 100 people in Kildare[1], will be diagnosed with this disease, and more than 1,000 people will die from it. However, with a growing, ageing population, the National Cancer Registry projects the number of diagnoses to reach over 5,700 nationwide by 2045[2].

Joan Kelly, Cancer Support Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said, “Bowel cancer most commonly occurs in people over 60 years of age and is often diagnosed in the later stages. However, if bowel cancer is caught early, it is extremely treatable. Recent figures showed us that 95% of people diagnosed at Stage 1 were alive 5 years later[3]. That is good news but this is not the case for people diagnosed with stage 3 and 4 bowel cancer. We need to work towards increasing the number of people diagnosed in the early stages”.

“To do this, the public need to be aware of the main signs and symptoms such as changes in bowel motions, feeling bloated, pain or discomfort in your tummy, or blood in stools. We would encourage anyone in Kildare who might be interested in checking their bowel health to take our easy to do online Bowel Health Checker which can be found at www.cancer.ie/bowelhealth. It’s a quick questionnaire and includes a letter which can be brought to your GP.”

Ms Kelly concluded, “The second way we can increase the numbers diagnosed early is by going for bowel screening when called. The majority of bowel cancer cases occur in men but only 37% of eligible males have availed of the State’s free screening programme - BowelScreen, compared to 46% of women. It is vital that people avail of this free, life-saving service that is offered to everyone aged between 60 and 69. A healthy lifestyle and a diet, high in fibre and wholegrains, can also help to reduce your risk of developing bowel cancer.”

To speak to a cancer nurse on any aspect of bowel cancer contact the Cancer Nurseline on Freephone 1800 200 700, email cancernurseline@irishcancer.ie  or drop into one of our Daffodil Centres in major hospitals nationwide.

The symptoms of bowel cancer include:

  • A change in your normal bowel motion, such as diarrhoea or constipation.
  • Feeling you have not emptied your bowel fully after a motion.
  • Pain or discomfort in your abdomen (tummy) or back passage.
  • Trapped wind or fullness in your tummy.
  • Weight loss.
  • Tired and breathless (due to anaemia from blood loss).
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in stools.

These symptoms can also be due to complaints other than bowel cancer. But do get them checked out by your doctor, especially if they last for more than 4 to 6 weeks.

For more information on BowelScreen call Freephone 1800 45 45 55 or visit www.bowelscreen.ie

Kildare senior ladies put in a dominant display on Sunday against Offaly in St Conleth’s Park that boosts their scoring difference and leaves them knowing that a win against Sligo away next weekend will secure a Div 3 league semi-final spot

We have seen this Kildare team blow hot and cold so far throughout the League where they have dominated for the majority of games only to lose concentration and see games they should have won slip away from them. They started slowly on Sunday against Offaly, but one could see as the game progressed, everything fell into place as Kildare players went up the gears, especially in the second half.  The home side led at the break 1.08 to 0.06, Kildare’s first goal going the way of Ellen Dowling slipping her shot under the body of Offaly netminder, Lauren Dunne.

Offaly managed only 4 scores in the second half and this was mainly due to the excellent defending by Kildare led by Lara Gilbert and Shauna Kendrick. Lara Curran and Orlaith Sullivan kept the Kildare scoreboard ticking over with simple frees but it was Grace Clifford, Neasa Dooley and Ellen Dowling who were rewarded with green flags raised as they cut through the Offaly defense, with pace and ease not missing the target. Kildare scored an impressive 3.10 in that second half with Suncroft’s Ellen Dowling finishing the game as top scorer on a tally of 2.04 - all from play.

Daniel Moynihan’s chargers are starting to knit very well as a team and whilst it has taken time, there are things to be worked on. Sligo won’t be an easy place go, with plenty still at stake and after Sunday’s display, this Kildare side are well equipped to get that result and secure a semi-final spot in this Division.

We wish the players and management the very best of luck next weekend and hopefully by day’s end, Kildare’s League campaign will still be on track.

Snow / Ice Weather Warning issued for Wicklow

A Snow / Ice warning has been issued by Met Eireann for Wicklow as well as Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Forecasters are predicting "wintry showers leading to possible snow accumulations and icy conditions".

The Warning is valid from 10pm tonight to 10pm to 11am tomorrow.

Irish Weather Online said tomorrow will be partly cloudy, with  northerly winds 40 to 60 km/hr, some outbreaks of rain in east could turn sleety and then to snow on higher slopes of Dublin and Wicklow and possibly at lower elevations for a time.

A mixture of sun and cloud, and staying dry most of the time further west with some sunny intervals but widely separated hail or mixed wintry showers possible with thunder as freezing levels will be quite low (near hilltop elevations). Highs near 7 C.

They added: "There are indications that colder air will make another assault from the northeast around mid-month so this rather cold trend is not likely to end completely for some time yet."
