An election is underway to elect six medical elected representatives to sit on the Medical Council of Ireland for the next five-year term with 21 doctors currently in the running, and Co Kildare doctors are being urged to participate in voting in the representatives.
The Medical Council, which is the regulatory body for doctors, has a statutory role in protecting the public by promoting the highest professional standards amongst doctors practicing in the Republic of Ireland. The Council has a majority of non-medical members. The 25 member Council consists of 13 non-medical members and 12 medical members.
The objective of the Medical Council is to protect the public by promoting and better ensuring high standards of professional conduct and professional education, training and competence among registered medical practitioners.
Six members of the Council are elected by registered medical practitioners, six are appointed by the Minister for Health, one being nominated by the Minister for Education and the remaining 13 are appointed by a number of nominating bodies.
Speaking today, CEO of the Medical Council, Mr Bill Prasifka said: “Members of the Medical Council have an important role to play in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of patients across Ireland. It’s important that registered doctors take the opportunity to have their say on the formation of the Council by participating in the election of new Council members. The option for doctors to vote online makes it accessible and should increase the number of participants in the upcoming election and we hope that Kildare based doctors’ use this opportunity to have their say.”
Doctors nationwide registered with the Council are invited to vote for their preferred candidates via their account portal on www.medicalcouncil.ie before 12pm, Wednesday 21st March 2018.
Following the closure of the poll the successfully elected appointees will be advised to the Minister for Health, the Council and the candidates.
Registered doctors are encouraged to vote for one of the candidates in each of the following categories:

Dr Thomas Crotty, (009645) a registered medical practitioner in the Specialist Division in relation to pathology or radiology was the sole candidate nominated in this category and is elected to the Medical Council, subject to appointment by the Minister for Health.
