A new bye-law is being proposed by the Athy Municipal District that will prevent residents from keeping horses in the middle of the townland of Athy.
The map below shows the areas in which there will be a ban on keeping horses if the bye-law is passed successfully, and it extends from the graveyard on the Dublin side of the town down as far as the Barrowford area, while it stretches from the Blackparks area of the town across to the Prusselstown area.
These laws are being proposed due to a small number of isolated incidents around the town in which horses have been kept in conditions that are not up to standards, and local Councillor Mark Wall has said that the health and safety of the animals is of primary concern when proposing these regulations.
Cllr Wall also told KildareNow that he hopes for locals to get involved in the discussion by sending in their thoughts to the council.
"I'd invite anyone who is interested in submitting their observations to the council to do so in the next fortnight. These laws are being proposed to regulate how horses can be kept safely in the area," remarked Cllr Wall.
