"Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that tourism growth continues. Our presence at this year’s British Tourism and Travel Show is just one element of our programme of activity with the travel trade.

"Our aim is to enthuse the GB travel trade, including online and traditional travel agents and tour operators, so they feature more island of Ireland holidays in their programmes for 2016.”

These are the dramatic pictures of a waste vegetation fire just metres from homes in Sandyford, south Dublin.

Dublin Fire Brigade sent units from Nutgrove, Donnybrook and Tara Street to the scene.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co Council also supplied a JCB to support the operation.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

Last week Kildare Fire Service issued warnings about uncontrolled burning on land in Co Kildare.

Uncontrolled burning causes a risk to neighbour’s homes, livelihoods and critical infrastructure in rural areas.

It also impacts on the safety and well being of elderly and infirm people living in areas affected by smoke.

The diversion of emergency service resources in such areas can have grave consequences in the event they are required for more life threatening emergency incidents elsewhere.

Co Kildare mother who was on brink of taking her life is concerned about Newbridge's copycat suicides

$

A Co Kildare mother who battled alcoholism while reaching the brink of ending her life  is concerned about a spate of copycat suicides in Newbridge.

The tragic deaths of five young men in the Newbridge  area over the past month has raised fears of a possible suicide cluster.

The deaths, four in the town and one nearby, has caused shock in the area. Three were in their thirties, and one in his early forties.

Meanwhile, a Co Kildare woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, is appealing for people to think before ending their life.

The woman, who got therapy 25-years-ago, after considering suicide and battling an alcohol problem from the age of 20, said: "If I had taken my own life the only person that could be held responsible would be myself and even then maybe not as my mental state was not healthy. I would have never been able to understand fully the pain I would have caused to the living, the distress, the questions they would have left unanswered.
We are all individuals. For me I wanted to end the pain I was in. I knew no other way to do that other than death.
But there are other ways. Doctors therapists and loved ones can all play a part in recovering from mental health problems and addictions."

At the age of 14, Mary( not her real name) tasted her first alcoholic drink.

She said: "I was always a shy person and found it hard to mix with others. At the age of 14 I tasted alcohol and loved the way it made me feel. As I got older and was able to afford alcohol I began to drink a lot. By the age of 20 I definitely had an alcohol problem. I just couldn't socialize without it and only socialized in places that it was available. By the age of 27 I was drinking every day. But the real torture for me was my ongoing obsession with thoughts of suicide."

She had a son at the age of 21 and during the pregnancy significantly reduced her intake of alcohol.

However, when he was born, she resumed her daily drinking. By the time she was 22, she was consuming beer from  morning until night.

Mary battled serious depression and began to isolate herself from family and friends.

She said: "I was not suicidal when drunk, the following morning would be terrible when I woke up sober. One thing kept me in this world. I had a child aged six whom I adored. I knew deep down that he needed me. I also knew that I would destroy him if I died by suicide."

Her son is now 30-years-old, she stopped drinking when he was six. She began a course of antidepressant medication.

She said: "It is 25 years since I stopped drinking. Today I feel sad at the loss and pain caused by suicides. I'm so grateful that I stayed in this world ,watched my child grow up, he is very proud of me,  stayed sober and no longer feel depressed. Most of my days are good days now."

Carbury farmer Rushe elected as new chairman of Kildare IFA

Brian Rushe, a dairy farmer from Derrinturn in Carbury, has been elected as the new chairman of the Kildare branch of the Irish Farmers Association at the county's AGM that was held in Newbridge last night.

Rushe is relatively young to hold such a position, but his appointment would seem appropriate to anyone who has read his excellent 'Farmer Writes' articles that are regularly published in the Farmers Journal.

The father of two was a committed suckler farmer up until 2013 before he converted to dairy farming. He is currently part of a massive chain of over 2,200 farms that supplies the Lakeland Dairies company with milk, while he is also in the process of completing a Nuffield Scholarship.

Rushe replaces the outgoing chairman Pat Farrell, who is running for the deputy president position on the board of the Irish Farmers Association. The Athy based suckler and beef farmer is running against Limerick farmer Richard Kennedy and Monaghan poultry farmer Nigel Renaghan for the position.

An Irish man living in Australia was stabbed to death while he was out on a date in a part of New South Wales.

The man, who local media have named as Keith Collins from Terrigal in New South Wales, was originally from Dublin but has been living in Australia for some time.

The 53-year-old Dubliner was out on a date with a woman he allegedly met on a dating website, when a man believed to be his companion's ex-husband entered the Kangam BBQ restaurant and stabbed Mr Collins in the chest and the neck.

The woman has been named in the local media as Jovi Pilapil, and while she also sustained injuries during the incident, she was able to flea the scene before she collapsed a number of minutes later.

The suspect is believed to be Ms Pilapil's ex-husband, Alexander Villaluna, and he was arrested approximately 20 minutes after the assault close to the scene. Local witnesses described him as 'eerily calm' following the stabbing and noted that he casually strolled up and down the busy shopping district outside the restaurant in blood soaked clothes with a 20 centimetre knife in his hand.

The 44-year-old has been charged with murder and attempted murder and is due before a sitting of Hornsby Local Court.

Call for measures to cut traffic jams at school gates in Co Kildare

$

Towns in Co Kildare should have 'drop-off zones' for school children to help reduce traffic jams at school gates, a councillor has said.

Cllr Mark Lynch is recommending the measure to be included in the new Kildare County Development Plan designed to improve services for the next seven years.

A special meeting of the Council will be held in Naas on Tuesday to consider amendments proposed by councillors.

A total of more than 200 amendments have been proposed to the planning blueprint.

Councillor Lynch of Sinn Fein called on the Council to "develop edge of town 'drop-off zones' whereby parents can drop their children and they can walk to school through town centres rather than cars blocking up main streets at intervals of the day."

Cian O'Neill has named two players in his side that haven't started already this year for this Sunday's final round league game against Clare in Newbridge on Sunday.

Hugh McGrillen and Rob Kelly will both feature from the start, with the Celbridge defender set to play his first bit of football under O'Neill on Sunday. Kelly was a late substitute in last Saturday's victory over Tipperary and the Straffan man has been named at full-forward alongside Fionn Dowling and Paul Cribbin.

The full-back line stays the same as last weekend following an impressive showing, while Kevin Feely and Tommy Moolick will also continue their promising partnership in the middle of the park.

Sunday's opponents are also likely to be Kildare's opponents in the league final in three weeks time, as the Banner men sit two points ahead of their closest rivals and have a much better scoring difference than the likes of Tipperary, Offaly and Sligo.

Throw-in on Sunday afternoon is at 2pm and KildareNow will be reporting live from St Conleth's Park to bring you the best of the action.
