Massive Intel development planning wider road, shuttle buses, multi-storey car park, 6,000 trees

Intel is prepared to spend up to $8 billion (€7 billion) on a manufacturing facility proposed for its base in Co Kildare, planning documents show.

Should the proposed development  go ahead, it would be the largest investment in the history of the State.

The development would see the firm add up to 1,600 staff to its workforce, the Irish Times reports.

Details of the proposal have just become publicly available after being filed to Kildare County Council this week.

Intel submitted an application for a 110,000sq/m development which it plans to tack on to a proposed 90,000sq/m facility, which was granted planning permission in late 2017.

The scheme also includes eight huge water tanks, a 48m tower, and a support building with generators and waste water treatment facilities.

There would be up to 3,000 construction roles at the peak of building and about 800 full-time positions upon completion.

Intel proposes widening the nearby R148 road from Leixlip to Maynooth to accommodate the extra traffic coming onto the site.

It says it would install 400 extra bicycle parking spaces, and build a multi-storey carpark, for which it has planning permission, to accommodate almost 600 cars.

To address traffic concerns, it has told planners it would set up a new shuttlebus service to take staff to the campus from the nearby towns of Celbridge, Leixlip, Maynooth and Lucan.

An environmental impact assessment report says Intel would have to remove 275m of protected hedgerows to accommodate the build, as well as almost 2.5 hectares of woodland.

To compensate, Intel says it would plant about 6,000 trees and 12,000 shrubs elsewhere on the campus.

Daft.ie Rental Report reveals rents in Kildare are up by 7.9% - average rents nationwide rose by 9.8% (Q4 2018)

$

Rents rose nationwide by an average of 9.8% in the year to December 2018, according to the latest quarterly Rental Report by Daft.ie. While this marks another record high in national average rents, the rate of increase is actually the slowest in almost three years!

The average monthly rent nationwide during the final quarter of 2018 was €1,347. This is €317 per month higher than the previous peak in 2008 and over €600 higher than the lowest seen in late 2011.

In Kildare, rents were on average 7.9% higher in the fourth quarter of 2018 than a year previously. The average advertised rent is now €1308, up 86% from its lowest point.

In Dublin, the increase in rents in the year to December 2018 was 8.8% and rents in the capital are now 37%, or almost €540 a month or €6,500 a year, higher than their previous peak a little over a decade ago. Rents continue to rise more rapidly in Ireland’s other cities.

In Limerick and Waterford cities, rents were 16% and 16.7% higher than a year previously, respectively. Galway saw its rents increase by 13.1% over the course of the year, while in Cork city, rents rose by 11.4%. Outside the five main cities, rents rose by an average of 10.4%.

The slight easing in inflation comes as availability shows slight signs of improvement. There were 3,641 properties available to rent nationwide on January 1. This marks an 11% improvement on the same date in 2018 and is only the second time – together with February 2017 – that stock on the market improved at a double-digit rate.

As always, the improvement in availability is led by Dublin (up 18% year-on-year on January 1) but was seen in all parts of the country.

Commenting on the report, Ronan Lyons, economist at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft Report, said:

“A rare improvement in availability of rental accommodation at year-end has meant a slight easing in rental inflation. This underscores the importance of additional supply in solving the problems of the rental sector, which have been on-going for nearly eight years.

"Construction of new homes remains focused on one-offs and estate housing, while the overwhelming need is for apartments, in particular for renters. It remains to be seen, therefore, whether the modest improvement in conditions over recent months continues.”

Average rents, and year-on-year change, Q4 2018

  • Dublin: €1,982, up 8.8%
  • Cork: €1,314, up 11.4%
  • Galway: €1,239, up 13.1%
  • Limerick: €1,171, up 16.7%
  • Waterford: €968, up 16.0%
  • Rest of the country: €949, up 10.4%

Rural Kildare community welcomes some progress towards road re-opening, as Part 8 for Slope Remediation is confirmed.

Finally, one small Kildare community can see some progress on the plans to reinstate/re-open the L6048 Coughlanstown Road (Ballymore Eustace to Kilcullen route) which has been closed since end of summer 2016.

Alan Fahey of Coughlanstown Road Closure posted confirmation from Kathleen Finnegan, on behalf of Evelyn Wright, SEO,
Roads, Transportation & Public Safety, Kildare County Council that the public consultation for Part 8 for the Slope Remediation Project would commence on February 5, 2019.

Amongst those who welcomed the announcement were Cllr Sorcha O'Neill (Naas Municipal District) and Fine Gael TD for Kildare South, Martin Heydon.

"In 2016, I met a large number of residents from Coughlanstown and surrounding areas to view the damage that has caused the closure of the L6048 Coughlanstown road. A burst water main resulted in serious subsidence of the road foundation and adjacent river bank which forced the closure" said Deputy Heydon.

“Since then, I have met with Kildare County Council and a delegation of local residents every six months to review progress on the reopening of the road and to keep pressure on the Council. While it has taken longer than expected I am delighted that we are finally at a Part 8 public consultation for remediation works to the road".

Meanwhile, residents of Ballymore Eustace and the affected areas staged a protest outside Naas Town Hall and held several public meetings to voice their fury at the state of the detour road via Mullaboden serving diverted traffic (pictured above) and the potential dangers of the 'safety' barriers erected by KCC.

Local traders reported a notable drop off in custom from residents who lived the Kilcullen side of the road closure. Local developer, Sean Mulryan of ballymore has submitted a planning application for a sizeable housing development at Doran's Meadow which would be accessed via the Coughlanstown L6048, with little or no development or population increase in the village over recent decades.

Ballymore Eustace Tidy Towns report the short stretch of road before the barriers is now being used for 'fly tipping' and the illegal dumping of household rubbish and garbage.

Cllr O'Neill encouraged locals to view the project documents and drawings  on display for four weeks from February 5, 2019. The  closing date for submissions is 5 pm on Tuesday, 19 March next.

The documents and drawings regarding the road reinstatement will be on display on Level 2 in Aras Chill Dara and in the Naas Community Library, Harbour View, Naas, Co Kildare, and also online at www.kildare.ie/countycouncil/PublicConsultations-Part8Schemes/roadsandtransportation/index.html

Deadline for tenders for remediation of Kerdiffstown Landfill extended

$

Kildare North Labour General Election Candidate Emmet Stagg has welcomed the seeking of Expressions of Interest to Tender for the Remediation of the Kerdiffstown Landfill.

Mr. Stagg stated that contractors originally until 31 January to indicate their interest in the contract but that this deadline had been extended to 14 February 2019  following requests for more time made on the etenders procurement website. Given the scale of the project Mr. Stagg stated that the extension of time seemed very reasonable.

Following on from the expressions of interest it is expected that actual tenders for the Remediation will be invited from the shortlist of contractors by the 31st March. The duration of the contract is 6 years and the estimated value is €27.5 Million.

The detailed description of the works to be undertaken are as follows:

* Remediation of the former landfill site at Kerdiffstown, Naas, Co. Kildare by capping wastes across the site, by providing a landscaped profile to the site and improving the landfill infrastructure systems, to ultimately provide a multi-use public park. The site occupies approximately 30 hectare and the works include the following;

* Installation of an engineered capping system across the site; Installation of new environmental management and control systems including leachate and landfill gas. This includes gas and leachate collection treatment and disposal systems and all associated mechanical electrical instrumentation, control and automation;

* Installation of a leachate transfer leachate pipeline from the site, crossing under the N7 and Morell River and connecting to Johnstown Pumping Station and then onward to Osberstown Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP);

* Development of a public park with multi-use sports pitches, car parking, changing room building, children’s playground and a network of paths across the site including provision of services and foul drainage to the public sewer network.

In conclusion Kildare North Labour General Election Candidate Emmet Stagg stated that 'we are finally at the stage where the Remediation of the Kerdiffstown Landfill is about to commence and where we will see a Public Park replacing what was the most environmentally destructive act we have ever seen in Co. Kildare'.

Super sub Brady strikes late to break Kildare hearts and give Roscommon victory in National Football League

Roscommon 2-12

Kildare 2-10

A 62nd minute goal from Sheila Brady was enough to give Roscommon victory over Kildare in Division 3 of the Lidl National Football League in St.Conleths Park.

Kildare played some marvellous attacking football at times and led 2-9 to 0-7 with twenty minutes to go on the back of  a pair of Ellen Dowling goals but the introduction of Sheila Brady at half-time really turned the game in Roscommon's favour.

It was all going swimmingly for Kildare until the 51st minute when they gave away a penalty and Rebecca McGuirk in goal was sin binned and after Brady stuck away the kick and with a gale force wind at their backs they kept coming at Kildare.

Brady scored 2-2 in total with the penalty and the stoppage time effort proving enough to get her side over the line and maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Its a game Kildare can definitley feel hard done by in though as referee Stephen McNulty quite strangely penalised them on at least two occasions for apparently intimidating opponents when they were shouting words such as block, block, block to their teammates and vital scores resulted in the frees for Roscommon.

Kildare made a couple of late changes to the named team with Amy Horan and Ellen Dowling coming in for Louise Scully and Mikaela McKenna respectively.

Neasa Dooley was player of the match in Kildare’s league opener and she continued that type of form at the beginning of the game with a well taken point in the first minute after she was found in space by Ellen Dowling.

Roscommon responded with a Laura Fleming free but after Molly Price squandered a decent opportunity for goal, Daniel Moynihan’s side soon found the net.

A long ball into the square caused condensation in the Roscommon rearguard and the ball eventually got into the hands of Ellen Dowling after a mistake and the Suncroft star made no mistake in placing a shot into the empty net.

Immediately after the goal Molly Price rattled a shot off the post but she was fouled in the process of shooting and Lara Curran converted the free as a result to give Kildare a 1-2 to 0-1 lead.

Rebecca Finan hit back with a free for Roscommon but five points in a row from Dowling, Dooley, Price, Curran and Orlaith Sullivan gave Kildare an eight point advantage entering the final few minutes of the half with Price and Curran’s efforts from play particularly striking.

Roscommon got two points before the interval with Fleming and Finan getting their second points of the half but Kildare were playing with the aid of a significant breeze and they brought a 1-8 to 0-4 lead into the break after Lara Curran got her first point from play when she stormed upfield before taking a nice score.

Rebecca Finan scored two frees in the opening half for Roscommon and she was on target again from a placed ball at the beginning of the second half but the Rossies were soon rocked by a second Kildare goal.

Wing back Trina Duggan made great ground out on the wing before picking out a pin point pass to Dowling and she made no mistake in powering a shot past Helena Cummins in the Roscommon goal.

Roscommon responded with a brace of frees from Finan before a Lara Curran score crept Kildare into a 2-9 to 0-7 lead but they would then go scoreless for a critical ten minute period where Roscommon took control.

The overall turning point in the game arrived in the 51st minute when Siobhan Tully was fouled by Kildare goalkeeper Rebecca McGuirk and a penalty was awarded.

Influential sub Sheila Brady slotted home the spot kick while McGuirk was given a yellow card and sin binned for her actions.

The penalty was Amy Heffernan’s first involvement in the game as she took her place in goal when Ellen Dowling was taken off and the result of being down to 14 really affected the hosts with Roscommon having all the momentum.

Kildare’s discipline was also letting them down with frees from Finan and Brady getting the visitors within two points after a Lara Curran free stemmed the flow.

Kildare were holding on for dear life near the end though and Roscommon were within a solitary score after efforts from Brady and Finan found the target.

Sub Jenny Higgins had a glorious chance to level the game for Roscommon but instead of taking a point she went for goal and could only find the side-netting.

The vital goal did eventually come though as Brady added her second goal in the 62nd minute when she cooly slotted home on the back of a flowing team move.

Eight minutes of added time were played but Kildare were unable to find the crucial goal as Roscommon held on for the two point victory.

Roscommon: Helena Cummins; Honor Ennis, Sinead Kenny, Niamh Feeney, Shauna Bannon, Joanne Cregg, Roisin Wynne, Aine Ryan, Laura Fleming 0-2 (0-1f), Katie Daly, Lisa Flynn, Sorcha Bruen, Siobhan Tully, Rebecca Finan 0-8 (0-8fs), Louise Brady.

He was also charged with possession of drugs at his home, on November 20, 2017.

Sgt Brian Jacob outlined to Naas District Court how following a search warrant, €50 of cannabis was seized and €30 worth of cocaine was seized, on May 20, 2016.

Evidence was heard in court how deal bags and a tick list were also found.  €2,500 in cash was also found, the court heard.

Co Kildare communities and racing fraternity seeking to erect permanent feature to commemorate 'the Racing Priest', the late Fr Sean Breen

$
0
0

He was known as 'the Racing Priest' or 'The Breener' and was one of the best known and best loved figures in horseracing from Punchestown to Cheltenham.  The late Fr Sean Breen gave tips from the alter during mass and never apologised for his love of racing. And why would he - the passion for horse-racing coursed through his veins, pardon the pun.

He is still remembered every year, none more so than on the opening day of National Hunt Festival when traditionally the opening feature race is dedicated to his memory.

As such, a committee has recently been established consisting of friends of the late Fr Sean Breen, who want to commemorate one of life’s greatest racing characters in a more permanent way.

"A Co Cavan native originally, Fr Breen spent the latter part of his career as the Parish Priest in the parishes of Eadestown and Ballymore Eustace, until his death in 2009" said Mary Healy Dooley, who lives in the parish of Ballymore Eustace. "It was in these parishes that he really left his mark on the community where he was well respected and an extremely popular figure amongst the locals".

She continued: "Horse-racing truly was his passion, an avid racegoer, Fr Breen rarely missed a race meeting at Punchestown or indeed, the Cheltenham Festival which he considered to be his annual 'pilgrimage'. He also enjoyed many successes as a racehorse owner where his horses raced under the name of the “Heavenly Syndicate”, signifying the great sense of humour which he undoubtedly had!"

Mary recalled - with humour - the late Fr Breen's "sermons from the pulpit" or sometimes even at the race meetings themselves which often contained his fancied selections. "A canny tipster" she added "it wasn’t unusual for attendances at masses which he held to increase, particularly in advance of the Punchestown Festival!"

As a tribute to commemorate the wonderful life of Fr Sean Breen, and in recognition of the contribution that he made to the local community within Co Kildare, it is the committee’s intention to commission a life size statue of 'The Breener'. It is envisaged that this statue will be handmade in bronze by renowned Irish sculpture Emma McDermott and erected outside the weighroom at Punchestown Racecourse in memory of his passion for horseracing.

"The total cost of this project is estimated to be €40,000 to include the statue and the associated works which will be required" continued Mary. "We are currently seeking donations and would greatly welcome any contribution which you would be willing to pledge to enable this project to come to fruition. A designated bank account has been setup to facilitate all donations and the respective details are outlined below:

Bank:                      Bank of Ireland, Naas, Co. Kildare.

Account Name:         Fr Sean Breen Statue Fund

Account Number:      2378 4397

Sort Code:                90 12 39

Please, if anyone would like to donate, or to undertake a fundraising event in aid of the Fr Sean tribute, please contact any of the following Friends of the Lat Fr Sean Breen: Valerie Osbourne: (086) 258 5452;

Leixlip residents voice outrage at lack of swimming pool

Outrage is being expressed in Leixlip that a promised swimming pool is not being provided.

A petition has now been launched appealing for the public's support.

A statement by the community calling on a petition to be signed said: "This petition has been set up because Leixlip was promised a public swimming pool for the last 30 years and it has never gotten the support from Kildare County Council it needed. There was a meeting held last week by the Council and it appears that the Council have been swayed to choosing Maynooth over Leixlip despite former assurances that Leixlip would get a swimming pool."

The statement said:"Maynooth currently have access to swimming in the Glenroyal Hotel and Carton House. While acknowledging that these are private options, this is two more pools than is currently available to anyone in Leixlip. Leixlip has no pools, public or private."

The statement said: "Leixlip is expanding rapidly with a large community and we deserve a swimming pool for the health of the elderly, disabled and young alike.

The recent decision by our councilors to approve the re-opening of a swimming pool at Maynooth university (where just four to five years ago one had to be closed down) has caused uproar in our community."

Kildare Senator writes to NTA proposing for bus lanes on motorways into Dublin to ease traffic congestion

By Kim O'Leary

Bus lanes on motorways could be the key to easing traffic congestion, Fine Gael Senator Anthony Lawlor has said.

Kildare Senator Anthony Lawlor has written to the National Transport Authority (NTA) proposing that the hard shoulders of some motorways could be widened to accommodate buses and coaches. The NTA have confirmed they will conduct a feasibility study on the N4/M4 corridor from Maynooth.

Speaking on the matter Senator Lawlor said: “Our recovering economy has led to increased traffic congestion on the motorways of this country. As a Kildare native I experience it every day on the N7 travelling to Dublin for my Oireachtas work."

He said:“Encouraging the use of buses and coaches is good public policy, as it is both the right thing to do from an environmental perspective and it eases traffic congestion generally for those who have to use cars for whatever reason. The M1 motorway approaching Belfast is a great example of the successful use of hard shoulders as bus lanes, and I would like to see the NTA consider replicating this here.I have asked the NTA to examine my proposal and I am hopeful of a positive outcome, particularly as they have now committed to undertaking a feasibility study on the N4/M4 Maynooth corridor, in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland."

“Having been constructed many years ago, the hard shoulders on the M1 in Belfast are wider than more recently constructed motorways in this jurisdiction. So road widening may be needed here to allow buses to travel safely. It would be important also that also all future motorway projects should consider road width to ensure the hard shoulder could be used as a bus lane. I will continue to engage constructively with the NTA on this idea and I hope it can be a viable solution to ease congestion for commuters all across the country,” Senator Lawlor said.

CarePlus Pharmacy to distribute free condoms to promote safe sex in Co Kildare this Valentine's week

CarePlus Pharmacy, Ireland’s fastest growing independent pharmacy chain, is to distribute thousands of free condoms this Valentine’s week to help to promote a culture of safe sex in Ireland-and people living in Co Kildare can visit any of their pharmacies in Kilcock, Maynooth and Celbridge.

Each of the chain’s 60 pharmacies nationwide will take part in “Sexual Health Awareness Week” from Tuesday February 12-Tuesday February 19, 2019.

The free condoms will be packaged with information on the importance of safe sex, and freely available from the counter without asking in each pharmacy, with several CarePlus pharmacies located in Kilcock, Celbridge and Maynooth to suit Kildare customers.

Figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Unit of the HSE show that rates of chlamydia, herpes simplex and gonorrhea are on the rise. For example, people in the age group 15-24 accounted for 51% of all chlamydia cases reported.[1]

CarePlus Pharmacist, John Keane says “The days of people being embarrassed about condoms in pharmacies are long gone, but the statistics show that many young people are not as careful as they should be. People should know that they can talk to their pharmacist, in privacy and confidentiality, about anything including their sexual health.”

Condoms are currently considered to a “luxury” item, and subject to the higher rate of VAT. Niamh Lynch, Commercial Director for CarePlus Pharmacy, hopes that will someday change; “Given the impact that STIs can have on people, it’s clear that price should not be a barrier to safe sex. If we can draw attention to the matter by distributing free condoms this week, hopefully it might give rise to a discussion about whether they are still a luxury item in 2019.”

CarePlus is a network of franchised pharmacies, owned and managed by community pharmacists, with the aim of providing a superior pharmacy experience in a friendly local environment.

The group continues to grow and now operates in over 60 key locations around Ireland. For further information on CarePlus Pharmacy, visit www.careplus.ie
