Naas Court hears man involved in 'elaborate' scam where money is withdrawn from shop's account after email is hacked

A man before Naas District Court has been sentenced to two years in prison, in connection to what is being described as an 'elaborate' internet scam.

The 36-year-old man with an address in Tallaght was charged with two  counts of  money laundering on January 13, 2017, at AIB Village Green, Tallaght.

Sgt Brian Jacob outlined to Naas District Court how a lady made contact with an interior design company to purchase products including curtains, blinds and a couch.

The court heard how she paid online to the company and that her bank details were on the company email.

Sgt Brian Jacob said that the company  emails were 'compromised' and that 'money was withdrawn.'

It is understood that the man was identified on CCTV.

Sgt Jacob said: "The shop email was hacked into."

Garda evidence said that the accused was part of a criminal gang.

The court heard how he had 15 previous convictions for money laundering.

Evidence was heard how €2,100 was withdrawn by the accused.

Barrister Aisling Murphy, said that she would suggest €1,000 be handed over to the victims.

Ms Murphy said that the accused is the father of four children, and has one child with special needs.

According to Ms Murphy, the accused received €200 for withdrawing the money.

The court heard how the withdrawals took place twice over one day, with €1,500 in one withdrawal and €600 in another.

Defence said: "He was not aware of the circumstances."

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "It is the elaborate fraud that was involved. He is a man who was caught, he knew exactly what was going on."

The Judge said: "Having considered the evidence carefully, aggravating features outweigh the circumstances. The co-operation is nil, there was no substance behind his attempt at co-operation."

Judge Zaidan said that he would impose the maximum sentence of 12 months consecutive, on both charges.

Kildare pipped at the post by Fermanagh in low scoring League affair

$

Fermanagh 0-8

Kildare 0-6

Kildare fell to their opening defeat in Division 2 of the Allianz League as they fell to Fermanagh in a dour contest at Brewster Park.

Kildare struggled for long periods against a Fermanagh team that employed a very defensive system that the Lillywhites just couldn’t find a way to break down.

Kildare never led and only scored a solitary point from play courtesy of Fergal Conway as Fermanagh frustrated the life out of them.

The victory was Fermanagh’s first in the league after two previous draws and Kildare even ended the contest a man down with Ben McCormack getting a red card in stoppage time.

Kildare struggled in the beginning to deal with what Fermanagh were throwing at them and the Erne County kicked the opening three points of the game

Sean Quigley got the ball running with an excellent free of the ground from distance before both Ryan Jones and Conall Jones extended the advantage with scores from play.

Adam Tyrrell steadied the ship with a couple of frees but Fermanagh again pushed the lead out with a fine shot from Eoin Donnelly finding the target as he made full use of an extended advantage to swing over and give Rory Gallagher’s men a 0-4 to 0-2 lead.

It took fourteen minutes for Kildare to register a score from play when Fergal Conway split the posts from out wide but instead of making use of that point, Fermanagh were able to bounce back.

Quigley landed his second free to maintain the two point lead for the hosts but it should have been much bigger than the 0-5 to 0-3 scoreline as they also kicked a number of scoreable chances wide of the goal.

It was plain to see that the plan and overall style of play that Fermanagh were bringing to the game was antagonising Kildare with Kevin Feely and Adam Tyrrell both getting yellow cards before the break and a melee even broke out on the whistle as Fermanagh took a 0-5 to 0-3 lead into the dressing rooms.

Cian O’Neill introduced both Jimmy Hyland and Cian O’Donoghue in attempt to break down the green wall in the second half and Neil Flynn got them going with a free in the 40th minute after he was originally fouled.

Quigley responded in kind to push the Fermanagh lead out again but Kildare were slowly but surely beginning to find a way into a contest that barely got the pulses racing at any stage.

Flynn doubled his attempts from frees before Fergal Conway brought the sides level for the first time in the 50th minute with a score from a mark after he received an incisive pass from David Hyland.

Fermanagh then had a glorious chance to push ahead when on a rare venture forward wing back Ultan Kelm got behind the Kildare defence but his shot was excellently saved by Mark Donnellan.

Fermanagh didn’t let that miss affect them though with Ryan Lyons edging them back in front with a score in the 59th minute.

Kildare tried everything to force an equaliser in the final ten minutes but they grew ever frustrated at being not able to find a way through and their efforts got tougher when Ben McCormack was sent off in stoppage time on a second bookable offence.

Fermanagh then played keep ball for the remaining minutes of the game until Ryan Lyons found space to kick the insurance score as they battled to an 0-8 to 0-6 shock victory.

Kildare now must wait two weeks before they can make amends as the League goes into a break.

Scorers for Fermanagh: Sean Quigley 0-3 (0-3fs), Ryan Lyons 0-2, Conall Jones 0-1, Ryan Jones 0-1, Eoin Donnelly 0-1.

Lots of action on the track at Punchestown today

$

0

A total of 40 horses remain in the €100,000 BoyleSports National Trial Handicap Chase at Punchestown today with the winner of the feature race gaining a free entry into the Irish Grand National courtesy of sponsors BoyleSports.

Today's card kicks off with the P.P. Hogan Memorial Cross Country Chase where Enda Bolger could field the cross country specialist Josie's Orders while Willie Mullins has entered the multiple graded race winner Ballycasey.

The first on a seven race card is due off at 1.40pm and further details can be found on www.punchestown.com.

The renowned three and a half mile BoyleSports National Trial Handicap Chase, which looks set to provide racegoers with one of the trickiest puzzles of the season so far, has attracted a host of familiar names headed by last year’s winner Folsom Blue and Baie Des Iles, trained locally by Ross O’Sullivan, who won this race in 2017 and finished third twelve months ago.

Tipperary-based trainer Denis Hogan is hoping to run his classy mare Youcantcallherthat who enjoyed a tremendous time last season when winning at Grade 2 and Grade 3 level. The eight-year-old was last in action when taking third in a handicap hurdle at Cork in December.

“She has been running over hurdles but I wasn’t disappointed at Cork because she was beaten by two horses who have both come out and won since and it was only over two and a half miles,” said Hogan.

“I’d be looking forward to getting her back over fences and a longer trip and this is a race that mares have a good record in. If we just get a bit of rain I’d be hopeful that she’ll run a nice race and then hopefully she will get an entry in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National.”

Gordon Elliott’s Folsom Blue, who also won the race in 2014, recorded a length and a half success over Isleofhopendreams in this race last year and he is among nine entries for the trainer who could also rely on last season’s Irish BoyleSports Grand National hero General Principle and the recent Thyestes Chase second Alpha Des Obeaux.

“We’ve left a good few in and we’ll just see how things are looking later in the week with the weather. It’s possible Folsom Blue could run again. He ran well over hurdles at Sandown at the weekend and he’s come out of that race in good shape. I’d hope that we will be well represented on Sunday it’s a great pot and I’d love to win it again,” commented Elliott.

Isleofhopendreams is also entered in the race for champion trainer Willie Mullins. The 12-year-old was second in this race last year before also finishing runner-up to General Principle in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National and then to Wounded Warrior in the BoyleSports Handicap Chase at the Punchestown Festival. Gavin Cromwell's Raz De Maree is another popular veteran who could appear in Punchestown's feature race on Sunday.

Leon Blanche of BoyleSports said: "Having witnessed Folsom Blue win this race last year and then prove quite unlucky not to win the BoyleSports Irish Grand National on Easter Monday it proves that this Punchestown race is a very noteworthy trial for the big event itself. BoyleSports will be giving a free entry for the BoyleSports Irish Grand National to the winner of Sunday's race and judging by the entries it looks like that added bonus will be hard earned."

Earlier on the card the Listed I.N.H. Stallion Owners EBF Novice Hurdle has attracted some decent types. Jessica Harrington could rely on Press Conference who accounted for the well touted Annamix at Limerick over Christmas while Henry de Bromhead’s team includes the impressive Down Royal maiden hurdle winner Sinoria. Meanwhile Gordon Elliott could give the promising Fairyhouse winner and Cheltenham Festival entry Chosen Mate his second start, while four time winner Prince D'Aubrelle looks the pick of three Willie Mullins-trained entries.
