Further information is being submitted for the €2.6million plans to redevelop Naas Racecourse.

Horse Racing Ireland is contributing €1 million to the project.

The proposal requires the demolition of some existing structures on the Tipper Road site, and a change of use for others.

Kildare planners requested more information to enable them to make a decision, and that has now been submitted.

The focal point of Naas’s redevelopment will see the stand next to the parade ring demolished and a modern curved structure built, incorporating a public ground floor bar, a first-floor owners and trainers bar and restaurant and a rooftop terrace giving race goers views over the parade ring and the track. The roof covering will be a folding design to allow lowering or erecting according to weather conditions.

Extensive interior remodelling of the grandstand is also planned, while works will also be carried out on the north stand.

Raiders entered The Crookstown Inn, Athy, through the broken window.

It is understood that the premises was broken into between 5.15am and 5.45am.

Cash was stolen during the process.

A home in Co Kildare was ransacked at the weekend.

Raiders entered the home located at the Athgarvan Road, Newbridge,  by removing a side window.

The home was ransacked while raiders fled with laptops and jewellery.

The incident took place between 5pm and 7pm on Friday evening.

A young woman is believed to be recovering following a traumatic attack at her home in Newbridge over the weekend.

The woman, who is 28- years-old, answered a knock on her door, between 3am and 3.15am on Saturday morning.

Gardai reported that the woman was assaulted and robbed at her home in Dara Park. A purse which she was holding was stolen.

A Newbridge based Co Cllr today called for the condemnation of the Mayor by the rest of the council. The motion, amended, from last week's written submission called for a vote of no confidence in Mayor Brendan Weld.

 Fine Gael Cllr Fiona McLoughlin-Healy is expressing disappointment that her fellow councillors did not support her call for the condemnation   of the  Mayor.

Cllr McLoughlin Healy is now uncertain of her future in the party and has been asked to sit away from her party colleagues. It is understood that her appeal for a vote of no confidence in Mayor Weld is being investigated and she may face expulsion from the party.

Speaking to KildareNow, Cllr McLoughlin Healy said: “ I did not want this to be a personal attack. It is a sad day for local government when the opportunity to examine anti-democratic practices in the Council is jettisoned in favour of discrediting the person seeking to expose them.’

The call for the condemnation of Mayor Weld is understood to stem from a November meeting when Cllr McLoughlin-Healy argued that there was a conflict of interest in Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin, a sitting councillor, at the time, being granted monies for a Bluebells and Buskers Festival.

She claims that several attempts were made to have a meeting with Mayor Weld but he did not meet her requests and she was left with no choice but call for a vote of no confidence and then an amended motion of condemnation by the rest of the council.

The Big C Choir raised a total of €8,000 for local charities from their concert in the Church of St Brigid in the Curragh Camp earlier this month.

A donation of €5,000 will be made to St Brigid's Hospice while the remainder of the total will go towards adult and children cancer research.

The Choir thanked everybody who generously supported the event on May 6.

Kildare Co Council is hiring people - for the second week in a row.

The local authority is compiling a panel for suitably qualified candidates for a Administrative Officer (Grade VII) which has a salary of €47,013 - €61,418.

The Council is also hoping to recruit a General Services Supervisor (Celbridge/Leixlip area) and an Architectural-Building Technician Grade II.

The closing date for both positions is June 16 and more information is available on the Council's Facebook.

Last week, the Council advertised for a Senior Executive Technician, a Senior Staff Officer (Grade VI), a Branch Librarian and Library Assistant.

This is the dramatic scene when a car was found on fire near a housing estate.

The incident happened off the Blessington Road near Jobstown on Sunday.

One unit from Tallaght Fire Station responded to the 999 call and officers dealt with the blaze.

The fire was extinguished before it completely destroyed the car.

Two Luas  planned for this week have been called off in the wake of a recommendation from the Labour Court yesterday.

Four-hour stoppages had been planned on Thursday and Friday of this week.

The court yesterday recommended an increase of 18.3% in basic pay for the drivers over the course of the next four years until September 2020, a jump from the previously tabled offer of 15.6%.

Jack and Emily still are remain the most popular babies names in Ireland.  Jack retains the top position it has held every year since 2007 and Emily has retained the number one spot that it first claimed in 2011.

The top five boys names, Jack, James, Daniel, Conor and Sean, have been the top five since 2007 with slight changes to their order.   Indeed, four of the top five boys’names Jack, Sean, Conor and James, have been in the top five since 1998.  This is the fifth consecutive year that Emily has been the most popular name chosen for girls.  Emma, Ava, Sophie and Amelia were the next most frequently chosen names to make it to the top five most popular names for girls in 2015.

George was the only first time entry to the top 100 for boys, rising 13 places, from 103rd in 2014 to 90th in 2015.  For the second year in a row Ollie was the boys' name rising most in popularity.  It increased 21 places from 87th place in 2014 to 66th place in 2015.

There were three first time entrants to the top 100 for girls:  Annabelle, Mila and Rosie.  Mila was also the girls name rising most in popularity, up 54 places from 142nd place in 2014 to 88th place in 2015.

As in previous years, the tables show that girls are given a wider variety of names than boys with 4,487 girls names registered compared to 3,475 boys’ names.  Despite the greater number of male births, a smaller range of names were used for boys than for girls.

For boys, eight areas favoured names outside of the top five for boys in 2015.  In Galway City, Adam was the most popular boy's name while Charlie was the most popular boy’s name registered in Co  Kilkenny and in Co Wexford.  In  Counties Laois and Longford, Michael and Patrick respectively got the number one spot.  In Waterford City, Daniel, Harry, Luke, Oisin and Oliver all shared the top position.  Similarly, in South Tipperary Darragh and Harry along with Jack were the most favoured names.  In Roscommon, Thomas along with Jack proved most popular.

For girls, there were only seven areas in 2015 where the number one name was not one of the top five.  Ella was the favourite in Roscommon.  Grace was the most popular in Co  Louth and South Tipperary.  In Galway City, Lauren was the most popular name.  Leah was the name most favoured in Waterford City while Molly was the most popular in Cavan.   In Limerick County, Anna, Emily, Grace and Mia all shared the top position.

Some of the less common girls names registered in 2015 and not included in the top 100 names were Paris, Nelly, Dakota, Kim, Pixie and Sabina.   Some of the less popular boys names registered  in 2015 were Barra, Pauric, Zayn, Gus, Romeo and Otis.

Where both parents were stated as being Irish nationals, Jack was the top ranked name for boys.  Jack was also the most popular choice with parents of UK nationality while Noah was the most popular boy’s name chosen by parents from the EU15 (excl. Irl & UK).  David was the name chosen most often by parents from the EU28 excl. EU15.  Parents from nations outside the EU made Muhammad the highest ranked name of baby boys registered in Ireland in 2015.

For girls where both parents were Irish nationals, Emily was the most popular name.  Isla and Chloe were the names most often chosen by parents of UK nationality.  Chloe along with Emma ranked first with parents of the EU15 (excl. Irl & UK) and Julia took the top spot with parents of the EU 28 excl. EU15 countries.  Parents from outside the EU28, made Fatima the name that ranked highest of baby girls registered in Ireland in 2015.

Meanwhile, in 1965 John and Mary were the most popular newborn names in Ireland.

An analysis was done of the baby names registered fifty years earlier in 1965. There were 3,360 boys whose registered name was John in 1965 which made it the most popular name for boys.  The name John was ranked number 28 in popularity in 2015 when 266 baby boys were so named.

The top five boys’ names in 1965 were, in order, John, Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas.  Of these five names only James was in the top five names registered for boys fifty years later in 2015.   

While 1,464 baby boys were named James in 1965 there was less than half of that number (697) named James in 2015.  The names  Adam, Jack, Luke, Noah or Charlie did not appear anywhere on the top 100 list of male baby names in 1965.  However, Michael, Daniel, Sean, and Conor were in the top 100 most popular names in 1965.   

For girls, Mary was the name of choice for 3,229 parents for their newborn daughters in 1965 making it the most popular name for girls born that year.  It was also still among the top 100 names (ranked 74) for baby girls born in Ireland in 2015 when 91 newborn girls were named Mary.

The top five girls’ names in 1965 were Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Anne and Ann.  None of these names featured in the top five names registered for baby girls in 2015.  Mary is the only name out of the top five in 1965 that features in the top 100 names for girls in 2015.  See table 11.

None of the top 10 most popular names for girls in 2015 appeared anywhere in the top 100 girls' names in 1965.

As in 2015, the data for 1965 shows that girls were given a wider variety of names than boys.  However, the range of names for both boys and girls were not as varied in 1965 in comparison to 2015.  There were 1,158 girls’ names registered in 1965 (versus 4,487 in 2015) and 744 boys’ names (as against 3,475 in 2015).

Kildare County Council said it would be open to taking possession of empty homes to help people on the housing list.

The issue was raised by Councillor Mark Lynch who called for new laws to take over properties sitting idle in order to help alleviate the housing crisis or accommodate the homeless.

The Sinn Fein politician said that derelict premises owned by NAMA, liquidators or the banks should be utilised in this way.

Council officials said the proposal was 'very worthwhile and really should be considered'.

Director of Services Joe Boland said the Council already has compulsory purchase order powers.

He said 10 house were acquired in Athy recently which took 10 people off the housing list.

He added: "In addition, any such refurbished units would have to meet stringent construction standards."

The owners of a dog in Co Kildare are urgently appealing for people to help fund medical treatment for a seriously ill dog who requires vital surgery.

Luna the dog has hip dysplasia which is worsening all the time. The pills to treat her condition are €150 weekly, which the owners can't afford.

Paula Posladek said: "She is getting worse, the pain in her eyes is evident.  Her butt wiggles from side to side when she walks. She cannot lift her butt up to pee or poop. I've learned to give her hip masages to try and ease her pain. She will come to me and put her hips against my legs for support, also so I could massage them.
Her eyes are sad, she will not walk up the stairs and she is not the happy dog she used to be.
We have extended this for too long and I don't want her to live in pain for the rest of her life. She is a part of our family and I want the best for her."
