A man who refused to give his details to a Garda appeared at Naas District Court.

Donal McNeela (60) of Seapark, Malahide, Co Dublin was stopped by Gardai in Edmondstown, Blessington on May 14.

He is charged with failing to give his name and address to a Garda under the Road Traffic Act 1961.

Mr McNeela stood up in court and began reading from a script alleging he was unlawfully arrested and charged and that he was contesting the jurisdiction of Judge Desmond Zaidan to hear the case.

However an angry Judge Zaidan interrupted: "You have no right to attack my integrity and the integrity of my office.

"You have no right to refuse to recognise this court.

"If you don't recognise Gardai or a judge then you don't recognise the judicial system, the Irish constitution or the Irish flag."

He added: "If you challenge my powers you will be put in prison for contempt of court."

Judge Zaidan then ordered Mr McNeela to leave the court and to consult a lawyer.

Mr McNeela returned later and the judge adjourned the case to June 22.

The judge said: "You have a right to access a lawyer or to access legal advice. You have a right to defend your case."

Maynooth survive late scare to edge by 14-man Castledermot in championship opener

Maynooth               1-14

Castledermot        0-13

Joe Mallon Renault SFC round one

Maynooth survived a real scare in their opening victory over last year's intermediate champions Castledermot at a sun-kissed St Conleth's Park on Sunday afternoon.

The north Kildare outfit looked to be well in control when they raced into a four point lead midway through the second half against a Castledermot side that had been reduced to 14 men, but the blues hung on and almost turned over their rivals in a spirited performance.

The first half was generally open and entertaining as both teams operated with traditional systems of six forwards and six defenders each, allowing for a spectacle that was quite easy on the eye.

The quality of the scores kicked was also something to behold as both sets of players showed no fear when pulling the trigger from long distance and, more often than not, such efforts resulted in scores.

It took only three minutes for Castledermot to draw first blood in this tie as Gavin Keating confidently pointed a 30 metre free, while his full-forward line colleague and older brother David added a second soon after with a fisted effort.

Castledermot owned the ball for much of the early stages, but Maynooth gradually found their way into the game. An excellent run and point from John McAndrew signalled their first score, while Sean Sinclair added a second moments later to cancel out the blues' lead.

Gavin and Dean Farrell then raised white flags at the town end through a pair of exquisite long range efforts, with both points coming either side of a Neill Flynn free at the opposite end.

Maynooth entered a period of extreme dominance for the next 15 minutes however, as they registered five points on the trot to take a commanding lead. Chris Canning pointed the first of those scores, while a massive 45 metre effort from county U21 star Paul Mescal sailed between the posts just a minute later as Maynooth took the lead for the first time. A brace of Flynn points, the first a 55 metre free, was followed by another eye-catching point from midfielder John McAndrew as the north Kildare outfit raced into a five point lead.

Castledermot had failed to score 17 minutes, but a Gavin Keating free just before the break sent the sides in with Maynooth leading 0-8 to 0-5.

The Castledermot management were clearly animated by their side's below par display during stages of the opening half, but whatever was said at the interval, they came out like a team transformed for the first six minutes of the second half.

They completely wiped out the Maynooth lead in that period as Maynooth had no answer for their fluent attack.

David Keating instigated the scoring with a divine curling effort, while Gavin slotted over another free immediately after. Another fine Dean Farrell levelled matters before Gavin Keating put the blues ahead with a stunning free from the left sideline.

Maynooth were in need of a momentum swing, and they got just that when Castledermot's Daniel O'Keefe received a straight red card for kicking out at Neill Flynn after the county star had set up Jonathan Flattery for a point.

With momentum clearly in Maynooth's favour at that juncture they begin to exert their dominance, and a point from the excellent Michael Fahey pushed Maynooth into a lead that they would never relinquish.

The eventual winners then hit the games pivotal score as a fine individual run from Seamus McBride ended with the wing-forward slamming the ball into the back of Paul Murphy's net.

Four points ahead and with a one man advantage, Maynooth were coasting, but Castledermot hung in to really give their oppona scare.

Some excellent scores from David Keating, Gavin Keating and Dean Farrell were only responded to by a point from Fahey at the opposite end as Castledermot cut the deficit to just one point with four minutes left on the clock. Maynooth regrouped however, and points from McAndrew, Fahey and Flynn eventually saw them over the line.

Scorers for Maynooth: N Flynn 0-5(4f), S McBride 1-0, J McAndrew and M Fahey 0-3 each, C Canning, J Flattery and S Sinclair 0-1 each.

Scorers for Castledermot: G Keating 0-6f, D Farrell 0-4, D Keating 0-3, G Farrell 0-1.

The Heritage Council announced on Friday that funding would be provided for a number of heritage projects in Kildare under its 2016 Community-based Heritage Grants Scheme.

A total of 171 heritage projects nationwide have been awarded funding under the scheme, which supports the continuing conservation and development of Irish heritage through local community based groups. Funding of €800,000 has been provided through the Heritage Council and the Department Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht and almost 400 projects across the country applied for funding. From conserving thatch to red grouse, to the cabin where Shackleton spent his last hours, protecting sensitive archives and so much more.

The Silken Thomas bar and restaurant have been awarded a grant of €8,000 to remove the ivy from the walls of Kildare Castle, while other rendering works will also be carried out on the historic building.

The Athy Heritage Centre have also been awarded €10,000 to go towards the conservation and restoration of the interior of the Quest Cabin.

Conor Newman, Heritage Council Chairman, commented, “These diverse projects reflect our cultural identity and distinctiveness as a people. If properly resourced they have the potential to give back to the community and to the country for generations to come.

"They are a hugely popular initiative, and while we weren’t able to support all of the projects which applied, I am very pleased that so many projects will benefit. These projects keep threatened aspects of our heritage alive and provide people with an opportunity to be directly involved in developing the future of their places. Many of the projects reflect years of ongoing work at community level to protect our heritage for the future," he concluded.

Impressive Celbridge send out a message by hammering Athy

Celbridge         2-15

Athy                   1-8

Joe Mallon Renault SFC

Celbridge sent out a real signal of intent on Sunday evening when they swatted aside the challenge of Athy with an ominously measured and professional performance in St Conleth's Park.

Last year's beaten county finalists were without some of their star names such as Niall Kelly, Kevin Feely and Hughie Mahon, while they also lost influential midfielder Mick Foley to injury after just eight minutes of play. Nonetheless, it was an impressive display from Celbridge as the likes of David Hughes and Fergal Conway starred for the Blues as they eased to their well-earned 10 point victory.

There were so many aspects of the first half that showed all the typical hallmarks of a vintage Celbridge performance.

From the aerial bombs being dropped in to David Byrne to the high intensity tackling in defence and the ability to win almost every breaking ball around midfield, last year's beaten semi-finalists gave the type of display that they would have hoped for in the build up to the game.

Ollie Lyons gave an indicator of what was to come when he produced a typical burst from the half-back line to set up David Hughes for the opening score, but a superb long range point from Pascal Connell at the opposite end cancelled that out as the game got off to a flier.

Celbridge took complete control of the game from that point onwards however, and they managed to score seven points without reply in a fabulous 20 minute spell.

Hugh McGrillen kicked off the scoring spree with a point from the right wing, while Hughes followed that up with his second and third scores of the evening, one of which was a fine long range point after a neat exchange of passes with Mark O'Sullivan.

A brace of points from probing wing-forward John Costello and a score apiece from Fergal Conway and Hughes left Athy facing an uphill task after just 25 minutes of action. A pointed free from Liam McGovern at the town end eventually brought an end to barren spell for last year's beaten county finalists, but their hope was short lived as Celbridge immediately went down the other end and scored a goal that effectively killed the game.

A long ball into the imposing figure of Byrne was well caught by the full-forward, and when his shot for a point was blocked down it fell into the path of Conor Brophy, who swept the ball into the bottom corner. To their credit, Athy finished the half out well and they managed to score the last three points through Cian Reynolds, McGovern and an exquisite effort from James Eaton point.

Things could have gotten much worse for Athy before the break when Mark O'Sullivan raced through on goal, but his powerful effort rattled the crossbar and the sides went in with Celbridge leading 1-8 to 0-5.

Athy looked utterly despondent with their first half display as they trudged towards the dressing rooms at the break, and there were surely some harsh words exchanged during the 15 minute respite.

It looked to have done them some good as they came and and scored the first point of the second half through Ross Bell, but Celbridge slammed the door shut by raising white flags through O'Sullivan, Hughes and Dylan Corcoran.

Athy threatened to mount some form of a comeback when substitute David Holligan slammed a powerful effort into the back of Shane McNamara's net, but Celbridge soon brought an end to any hopes of salvaging something that Athy may still have held when Fergal Conway angled an unstoppable swerving drive into the top corner of James Roycroft's net.

The game lost all intensity from that point onwards as the 2-12 to 1-6 deficit was insurmountable from an Athy point of view, and although there were a few nice points added on by the likes of Hughes and Byrne, the game really fizzled out.

A good start for Celbridge, but they are probably one of the only teams that would consider themselves among the main challengers for the title that were able to name a full strength 15 for their opening round.

Scorers for Celbridge: D Hughes 0-8(4f), F Conway 1-1, J Costello 0-2, H McGrillen, D Corcoran, D Byrne and M O'Sullivan 0-1 each.

Scorers for Athy: D Holligan 1-0, L McGovern 0-2f, J Eaton, D Hyland, R Feely, R Bell, P Connell and C Reynolds 0-1 each.

Sarsfields avoid shock opening round defeat as brave Carbury challenge falls just short

Sarsfields      1-15

Carbury         1-13

Joe Mallon Renault SFC round one

The first round of senior championship games came to an end in St Conleth's Park on Sunday evening in superb style as an Eoghan O'Flaherty inspired Carbury fell just short of causing a massive upset against the 2015 county champions.

Ray Cahill ended last year's epic county final by scoring three of the last four points into the goals at the Kilcullen end of St Conleth's Park, and the centre-forward picked up where he left off as he totted up a trio of scores inside the opening seven minutes to ease his side into the game.

The first was a straightforward effort from play, the second a handy free and the third came from a sublime curling shot from out on the left wing.

O'Flaherty then got his first of the evening to settle Carbury into the game as he engineered a yard of space for himself by bursting by the challenges of three Sarsfields defenders. The Sash got back into their rhythm soon after, and Dan Nea curled over a beauty of a point after being fed an inch perfect pass by Ciaran McInerney Aspell.

Carbury then bagged their big break in the game, and it was O'Flaherty who was at the heart of things once again. The county star placed a 40 metre pass into the bread basket of Daryl O'Brien, and he scooped a handpass over two Sash defenders into the path of Andy Dermody and he applied a composed finish to the corner of Andy O'Brien's net to send the Carbury fans into raptures.

Sarsfields didn't panic however, and a couple of scores from Con Kavanagh and Alan Smith brought them back into the lead with 23 minutes played. They almost found a goal of their own when Matty Byrne released a snapshot from 10 yards out, but Carbury stopper Declan Conroy showed brilliant athleticism to dive to his right and claw the ball away from the bottom corner.

That save seemed to galvanise the rest of the team, and three quick fire frees from O'Flaherty sent them into the break with a thoroughly deserved 1-5 to 0-6 lead.

Sarsfields were gifted a great start to the second half as referee Brendan Hickey awarded the county champions a rather dubious looking penalty after Matty Byrne went down under the challenge of Darren Moore. Ray Cahill found the corner of the net from the spot as the Sash edged back into the lead once again.

While Conroy was unable to keep out Cahill's penalty, he did manage to get on the scoreboard a minute later with a long range free, while James Kelly soon followed up with the first of his three second half points. The game really caught fire then and it became a real turkey shoot between Cahill and O'Flaherty as both men brought their considerable scoring talents to the fore for the remainder of the game.

Cahill pointed a free, while Shea Ryan- who was superb throughout- kicked a score after Conor Hartley found his in space 20 metres from goal. Ryan and Hartley were involved in Sarsfields' next score as the former played a smart ball towards Dan Nea, who in turn laid it across to Hartley and the U21 county panelist slotted over from long range. Nea then turned from provider to scorer as he sold a brilliant dummy to his marker Kevin O'Neill before fisting over to give Sarsfields a 1-10 to 1-7 lead.

Carbury didn't drop the heads however, and another fine score from Kelly was followed by an O'Flaherty free as the gap was cut to the minimum once again. A frantic final 10 minutes saw a plethora of exquisite scores from the likes of Nea and Byrne for Sarsfields, while O'Flaherty and Kelly also found the target for Carbury.

A final point from the Carbury maestro left just one point between the sides going into injury time, but a stunning point off his left boot from Cahill gave Sarsfields the extra bit of breathing space as they edged towards the win.

Scorers for Sarsfields: R Cahill 1-7(3f), D Nea 0-3, S Ryan, C Hartley, M Byrne, C Kavanagh and A Smith 0-1 each.

Scorers for Carbury: E O'Flaherty 0-9(5f), J Kelly 0-3, A Dermody 1-0 and D Conroy 0-1f.

Warning about email scam about 'stranded friend' looking for money

$

People have been warned about an email phishing scam in which fraudsters hack into email accounts and pretend to be your friend looking for money while stranded abroad.

A KildareNow reader who contacted us via Facebook said she received an email from a pal's email address claiming she was abroad on holidays and had lost her purse and passport.

The message says the friend 'needs a little help' which presumably means transfer money.

The KildareNow reader said: "At first, I was shocked to hear what had happened to my friend and I wanted to help her.

"However she said she was in Cyprus and I actually had no idea she was going there so I texted her to ask: 'are you ok?'

"But to my shock, she texted back and said she was nowhere near Cyprus and was at her work in Dublin!"

The clever email that popped into the reader's inbox had said: "I hope you are doing ok, i am in Limassol, Cyprus at the moment and I just misplaced my bag containing my passport, phone and money. I need
a little help..."

Fraudsters target millions of people via email every day, with scams becoming more and more elaborate.

The latest version of this 'phishing' scam involves a fraudster hacking into an email account and sending out emails to people in the address book.

These emails ask the recipient for money to be transferred  to help a friend who is stranded abroad, and they can seem very genuine.

However a fake recipient account is often set up with Western Union which has absolutely no knowledge of the scam.

Over a thousand ineligible third level students mistakenly paid grants

More than 1,200 students mistakenly paid €3,000 each in grants were able to keep the money after authorities admitted there was no hope of getting it back.

The taxpayer was left to foot the €3.7m bill after student grants body Student Universal Support Ireland (Susi) failed to recoup the grants paid in error in 2012 to ineligible candidates.

The overpayments to more than 1,200 people happened in Susi’s first year of operation, when inadequate staffing and poor planning dogged the system. The overpayments have already been subject to examination by the Comptroller and Auditor General in a broader probe of the process to establish Susi as the centralised body to handle all college grant applications.

However, it has now been decided that, following unsuccessful efforts to recoup money from the vast majority of those who benefited, the total sum of €3.7m is being written off entirely.

The majority mistakenly paid the money were students who also received a Back to Education Allowance from the Department of Social Protection.

Last July, based on legal advice from the Attorney General’s office, the Department of Education asked City of Dublin Education and Training Board (CDETB) which operates Susi to write to those involved.

CDETB had initially sought approval to write off the overpayments. They were required instead to ask for the amounts paid in error to be repaid and submit a report on the outcome within six months.

Almost 30million  people flew in and out of Ireland’s main airports last year,  the largest number since the record in 2008.

Dublin was by far the busiest, accounting for almost 84% of travellers, while Cork and Knock were the only airports not to increase their numbers on the previous year.

The figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show a 12.5% increase in air passengers at the main airports in 2015.

Turnover  increased by 21% to €680 million, driven by record passenger numbers at Dublin Airport and strong growth in commercial and retail revenues both in Ireland and at the Group’s overseas businesses.

Total passenger numbers at Dublin and Cork airports increased by 14% to a record 27.1 million last year. Dublin Airport had a stellar year, as passenger numbers increased by 15% to 25 million.

Dublin Airport set new passenger records in all major sectors of its business last year. An extra 3.3 million passengers were welcomed with 23 new routes and more capacity on 40 existing services.

Emily Davies from Scoil Dara, Kilcock and Rhiannon Kelly from Cross and Passion College in Kilcullen joined over 100 Transition Year students from across the country to celebrate their graduation from St Patrick’s Mental Health Services Walk In My Shoes Transition Year Programme.

St Patrick's Walk In My Shoes invited students from all over Ireland to take part in a week long placement hosted by the Adolescent Mental Health team at St Patrick’s University Hospital.

To date almost 500 students have taken part in the programme which is currently in its sixth year.

The programme aims to educate young people about mental health issues and to breakdown the stigma associated with mental illness.

All participants will return to their schools as ambassadors for mental wellbeing and share their new understanding of positive mental health by preparing and giving a presentation to their classmates on their return to school.

Sarah Surgenor of St. Patrick’s said: “Integration of mental health awareness and education plays a significant role in combatting stigma in schools and communities.

"The interest in this programme is increasing every year, demonstrating a positive attitude towards teaching students about mental health.”

Paul Gilligan, CEO at St. Patrick’s said: “With 75% of all mental health difficulties beginning before the age of 24, it’s crucial that students learn how to manage their mental health and access available supports from an early age. Each year 100 students complete this course and return to their communities with a healthier attitude towards mental health difficulties.”

Guest Speaker for the ceremony and TV Personality Alan Shortt said “This programme goes above and beyond to reach out to young people and I am delighted to be part of this award ceremony.
These students are a credit to their schools and are well equipped to become mental health champions in their communities.”

There are just four weeks to go for Naas tidy towns competitors with appeals for more volunteers.

Naas is gearing up for another successful Tidy Towns Competition scooping a gold medal last year.

However, concern is being voiced by Volunteer Co-ordinator, Vourneen Hennessy,  about the lack of support from the community.

She said: "The Tidy Town Volunteers are making a massive effort but we need more volunteers. There are 11 members in the Tidy Town Committee and about 22 extra have joined from the community."

The group meets every Monday evening while some volunteers, including Vourneen, are out cleaning the town five days a week. Recently the Scouts joined forces to tidy the town.

Judging will take place in July.

Thousands of euro was raised for autism at the Fund-Racer Ireland event at Mondello Park at the weekend.

Proceeds from the fourth annual event were in aid of The Jay & Ellie Foundation and Irish Autism Action.

The occasion featured more than 80 Supercars, Racing Cars, Sports Cars, Rally Cars and Drift Cars which were displayed at the Westgrove Hotel in Clane on Friday evening.

The Mondello group was welcomed by General Manager Jerry Russell and Sales and Marketing Manager Catherine Killeen.

Jay and Siobhan O'Reilly - parents of Jay and Ellie, said: "We are the proud parents of two amazing children, Jay and Ellie, who live with Autism on a daily basis.

"The intervention of Irish Autism Action has improved the quality of the kids’ and our lives exponentially.

"We wanted to give back something, all kids love fast cars and so couldn't think of a more fun way to do it.”

Begun in 2013, the events have raised over €60,000 to date.

Spectators are free but it costs €250 to enter each car. The organising committee and sponsorship pays for all operational costs leading up to and including the day, so every penny we take in is given to the charity directly.

Gardai said this drone with a camera was found crashed in the Newbridge area on Saturday.

A Kildare Garda spokesperson said: "It looks like it might be expensive and expensive to repair!"

Some details have been hidden in the photo so that the rightful owner will be able to correctly identify it and claim it.

Contact Newbridge Garda Station on (045) 431212 to reclaim.

New legislation governing the registration of drones came into effect in December.

Under the new rules, all drones weighing 1kg or more will have to be registered with the Irish Aviation Authority.

There are estimated to be between 4,000 and 5,000 drones already in use in Ireland.

Drones operated by those under 16 must be registered by a parent or legal guardian.
