A Kildare town mother of nine children has been convicted of assault at Naas District Court.

On Thursday, the 38-year-old woman appeared, facing charges of threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour, at Silken Thomas and assault, at the Dublin Road, Kildare,  on November 22, 2015.

The injured party, outlined in court, how a 'row started in the bathroom' of the Silken Thomas.

At Naas District Court, the injured party said: "She heard me mention her name, I had congratulated her and her husband on their wedding."

The injured party told the court how after the nightclub, she was approached by the accused.

In court evidence was given by the injured party how the accused 'walked out of the darkness.'

The injured party said: "She grabbed me, she did not stop until somebody stopped it. She was punching me, grabbing my hair."

Under cross-examination by Defence Solicitor, Conal Boyce, the injured party was asked how much alcohol she consumed on the night in question.

She said: "I can't recall, in Tiger Lillies, I had about six or seven drinks. I can't recall what I was drinking, probably Gin and Tonics."

The court heard how at the time, the accused had been married a few months but that there were difficulties at that stage within the marriage and that the injured party was working for the accused's sister-in-law.

A witness in court said that the injured party could be heard in the cubicle asking 'did you see her face when I was dancing with her husband.'

The witness in the cubicle of the Silken Thomas that the injured party said: "I said, 'congratulations on your wedding day', it was said in a mocking way."

Evidence was given how after the niteclub, when the accused, her ex-husband and friend, were going to the chippers, the accused went to approach the injured party.

She said: "I saw the two of them engaged in a fight. We did not see who started the fight.  We ran across the road and broke it up."

At Naas District Court on Thursday, Garda Daniel O'Shea, said that on November 22, 2015, he became aware that the injured party had become involved in 'an altercation.'

He said: "She was extremely upset, her hair was ruffled and messy. There was a mark in her eye."

Garda O'Shea said that at the time he did not take a statement in relation to the incident on the night, but on a later date, as the injured party was intoxicated.

A statement was taken from the accused some days later.

The accused, at Naas Districr Court last Thursday, said that the injured party attacked her.

She said: "She bit me, there was blood on my arm. I did not punch her in the face, I had to get a tetanus and antibiotics after she bit me."

Prosecuting Inspector Mel Smyth said that the accused was 'aggressive and angry'.

He said: "She was going to confront the injured party."

Defence Solicitor Conal Boyce, said that the accused's marriage broke up and that 'there was a lot of pressure from third parties.'

The court heard how she had a previous public order offence dating back to 2006 and previous for road traffic offences.

Judge Bernadette Owens convicted and fined the accused €100 for a Section 6 Public Order offence and €250 for a Section 2 assault. She was given six months to pay.

Brilliant McKenna helps Kildare power past Derry and into Christy Ring Cup final

Kildare      3-18

Derry        2-13

Christy Ring Cup semi-final

Kildare goalkeeper Paddy McKenna pulled off six brilliant saves to help Kildare secure their place in this year’s Christy Ring Cup final thanks to an eight-point win over Derry in Iniskeen. The Lilywhites eventually eased over the line in what was a brilliant game, with Jack Sheridan netting two brilliant second half goals for the victors to guide them to the Croke Park decider on June 23.

The opening stages of the game was not high on quality, but there was no shortage of intensity which created an entertaining game that really got the nice smattering of supporters involved. Derry started in blistering fashion as they found the back of Paddy McKenna’s net through dualstar Brendan Rogers as the Slaughtneil man took a pass from Mehaul McGrath and made no mistake with a low finish from close range.

Kildare responded instantly as Brian Byrne caught the resultant puc out from McKenna and stroked it over from 40 metres, and two pointed frees from Barry Cormack levelled matters after eight minutes.

Cormac O’Doherty landed the Oak Leafer’s first point through a free, but Kildare hit back with their first goal as Cormack’s long range free bounced off the upright and Martin Fitzgerald was on hand to bat in the breaking ball. It was the Ardclough man’s sixth goal in four games in the Christy Ring Cup.

A couple of brilliant points arrived at either end in quick succession as the game began to open up, with Brian Cassidy pointing from the left wing for Derry before Shane Ryan split the posts with a lovely over the shoulder effort.

O’Doherty and Cormack traded scores from frees, before a brilliant Paul Divilly effort and a fine individual score from Mark Grace pushed Kildare 1-7 to 1-3 in front. It looked as if they might be pulling away at this stage, but Colm McGurk’s men kept themselves firmly in the battle as Cassidy set Sé McGuigan up to slot home their second major in the 25th minute. Kildare almost netted at the other end through Shane Ryan, but his rasping drive struck the post, though he was fouled in the build up and Cormack knocked over the resultant free.

Paddy McKenna really kept the Lilywhites in the game before the break as he pulled off three brilliant saves to twice deny McGrath and one fine block on Rogers, the pick of the bunch being a great diving effort to claw away a powerful shot across goal from McGrath.

Points from Cian Waldron and O’Doherty pushed Derry into the lead as half-time approached, but a final free from Cormack before the interval levelled matters at 1-9 to 2-6.

There was very little to choose between the two sides during the opening stages of the second as both teams had small passages of momentum without ever pulling away. A brilliant Kevin Whelan point was cancelled out by a score from Rogers, before Kildare seized the initiative with two scores in a matter of moments as Niall O’Muineacháin flicked a ball up quickly and struck over a brilliant effort, before substitute James Burke slotted a free between the posts. Ryan hit the upright for a second time during that passage of play, but Kildare looked to be upping the ante at this stage.

The Ulster men responded well as O’Doherty landed a free and McGuigan raised another white flag with a fine effort from distance, but it should have been much better for them as McGrath had another opportunity on goal but was again denied by a diving McKenna.

Kildare made no mistake at the other end when Shane Ryan battled well to win a ball in front of two Derry men before picking out Sheridan to thunder home a second goal for the Lilywhites, and while McGuigan replied with a point for Derry, Mark Moloney launched over an inspirational score for Joe Quaid’s charges to push them four clear with 20 minutes to play.

Scores from Paul Cleary and O’Doherty chipped away at the lead for Derry, and they should have taken the lead when Aodhan O’Donnell ran through on goal but McKenna continued his stellar afternoon by parrying his effort.

That signalled the start of Kildare’s drive towards the winning line as Burke caught a McKenna puc out and bombed over a superb point, and he added another from play shortly afterwards. Sheridan finished the tie as a contest when he turned on the afterburners to run 50 metres with the sliotar on his hurl before knocking it past Derry ‘keeper Ruari Convery.

There was no way back for Derry by this stage, and late scores from Fitzgerald and Ryan helped Kildare ease over the line and into a Christy Ring Cup final against London.

Scorers for Kildare: J Sheridan 2-0, B Cormack 0-5f, J Burke 0-4(2f), M Fitzgerald 1-1, S Ryan 0-2, M Moloney, M Grace, N O’Muineacháin, B Byrne, P Divilly and K Whelan 0-1 each.

Issues around public drinking in Athy to be raised at municipal meeting

There has been a call made for a review into the alcohol bye laws in Athy by a local councillor.

Cllr Thomas Redmond has raised the issue after voicing a concern that there has been no fines issued for alcohol consumption in public areas in Athy.

The Sinn Féin representative has pushed forward the following motion to the next meeting of the Athy Municipal District;

"That the council immediately review alcohol bye laws in this municipal district following information that current bye laws are inadequate and there has been zero fines issued for consumption of alcohol in public areas in this municipal district."

While there is no national legislation prohibiting drinking in public, each local authority area is entitled to pass bye-laws prohibiting the consumption of alcohol in a public place.

Quaid heaps praise on superb McKenna following phenomenal display against Derry

$
0
0

Kildare manager Joe Quaid won two All-Stars while minding the nets for Limerick over the years, so he is best placed to sum up the superb performance that Kildare goalkeeper Paddy McKenna turned in on Sunday afternoon.

The Clane man pulled off six brilliant saves that were a mixture of brave blocks, diving efforts and close range parries as Kildare saw off the challenge of Derry in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final. The fact that Derry managed to get two past him was no blotch on his worksheet as there was nothing he could do about either of those efforts.

Speaking after the game, Quaid gave the utmost praise to his high performing custodian.

“If that was done in Thurles, Páirc Úi Chaoimh or the Gaelic Grounds today they’d be raving about it,” he said.

“That was superb by him. OK, the second half there were a lot of hurley saves as I call them, but in the first half he put his body on the line two or three times when you’re not expected to save them.

“He has been superb in the championship.”

The Clane man was clearly delighted at full-time, and when asked whether or not it was the best performance he can ever remember putting in in a Kildare jersey, he told KildareNow; “Any day you go out you’re just hoping that a few hit off you and you get a few hurls to them, but any day you put on the jersey for your club or your county you step up a bit.”

“You take what you’re given. The boys have bailed me out on plenty of occasions in games where I’ve let balls in over my head and through my legs, so it’s just great to be able to repay them that way.”

McKenna has been in fine form throughout this Christy Ring Cup campaign, so much so that when a shot goes in on the Kildare goal it is more surprising when it finds the net rather than bouncing of the former DIT student or his hurl. McKenna was keen to pay tribute to his goalkeeping coach, and to Paul Dermody and Mark Doyle, who are now the back up goalkeepers.

“Huge credit has to go to Willie Banks, our goalkeeping coach. He has myself, Dermo [Paul Dermody] and Mark Doyle in great shape and any one of us could step in and be able to perform.”

McKenna spent a few years behind Dermody in the pecking order for Kildare, but he has now firmly implanted himself as the county’s number one. He admits it was frustrating at times waiting for a chance to show his credentials, but the relationship with his former teacher always remained very good.

“He taught me in secondary school so I’ve known him since I was about 13 or 14,” he said of Dermody.

“It’s just great to be able to learn from him. Having hurled with Kilkenny he has that experience, so it’s great.

“Often times I’d go home frustrated, but in fairness to my family they said ‘look, your time will come, just be patient’. In goalkeeping you only have on position to fight for, out the field it’s a bit different because if you’re a back you can play a number of positions. Joe [Quaid] always said to me ‘patience’, and that’s what happens.”

McKenna will get to line out in Croke Park on June 23 for the Christy Ring Cup final, which is something he will be hugely looking forward to.

“I was around in 2014 when we beat Kerry and I’ve played a couple of other games there, but it’s great to get back and there will be huge excitement around the place. Hopefully we’ll be able to repay everyone who comes and supports us.”

Call for tax cuts on fuel as petrol and diesel prices soar

$

0

Drivers want the Government to considering cutting motor fuel taxes as prices have hit a three-year high.

Figures from insurer AA Ireland show that a litre of petrol now costs €1.48 on average, compared with €1.41 last month.

And motorists pay €1.38 or diesel now - up from €1.31 in May.

Conor Faughnan, AA director of consumer affairs, argued that recent price increases meant that it was time for the Government to re-assess the “exceptionally high” taxes on both petrol and diesel.

“In particular, given that we are often hearing from Leinster House that the recession is behind us, it’s time for the 20 cent of ’emergency taxes’ introduced during the worst years of the economic crisis to be reduced or removed,” he told the Irish Times.

AA Ireland noted that fuel prices are at their highest since 2015.

A litre of petrol is 9 cent more expensive than at the start of 2018 while diesel costs more than 10 cent extra.

Mr Faughnan pointed out that circumstances forced Irish people to rely heavily on their cars, but fuel and insurance hikes were pricing them off the roads.

“With fuel prices continuing to climb, there is a risk that some people will start to view the costs of commuting to work as unsustainable currently or that those currently looking for employment may not be able to meet the cost of attending interviews or re-joining the workforce,” he said.
