An appeal has been lodged against Kildare County Council's decision to refuse permission for the construction of a mixed use development in Athgarvan.

Thoval Properties' bid to construct the €1.8 million project was turned down by the council earlier this year, but an appeal has now been lodged with An Bord Pleanála to get the decision overturned.

The original plans outline a development that would consist of four shop units, an office unit at ground floor level and four medical/office units at first floor level. There would also be four apartments on the first floor of the development, along with a courtyard area and boundary walls in the project.

An Bord Pleanála are currently considering the appeal.

An award of €5,000 to a Co Dublin man who claimed he was defamed when he was told by a barman that a €10 note he used to pay for a pint of lager was fake, has been upheld by the High Court.

Leonard Nolan (53), of Pearse Gardens, Sallynoggin, sued Laurence Lounge Ltd, trading as Grace’s Pub of Rathmines, Dublin, for defamation over the April 24th, 2013 incident.

Mr Nolan was awarded €5,000 plus costs in the Circuit Court in 2016.

Bur the pub appealed to the High Court where, Mr Justice Michael McGrath yesterday upheld the award.

The barman told the court he dealt with the matter as discreetly as possible.

He said he knew the €10 note was not genuine because it did not have a silver strip running down the middle of it.

Mr Nolan said he brought the note to the local garda station where a Garda confirmed it was genuine.

Transition Year students from inner city Dublin visit Kildare for fishing project

Transition Year pupils from a school in Dublin visited the K Club’s pike fishing lakes in Co Kildare recently for an angling project.

Christian Brothers School (CBS) James Street, Dublin 8 took part in the second annual Angling Adventure fly fishing project run in co-operation with eir and IFI.

Following the success of the programme in 2017, it was expanded this year to cover even more elements of fishing including coarse, pike and fly fishing, casting, fly tying, and environmental awareness.

Inland Fisheries Ireland representatives recently attended the School to present certificates to students.

The 13-week programme with IFI and the inner-city Dublin school has been very generously funded by eir under its remit of corporate social responsibility to communities and the environment.

Alongside classroom workshops delivered by experts in the field of fly tying and casting, field trips were organised at teh K Club lake, Lough Ramor in Virginia, Co. Cavan; Annamoe Trout Fishery in Co. Wicklow as well as an environmental field trip to the River Dodder in Dublin.

Attendance throughout the course was excellent and pupils were fully engaged with the course content and their mentors.

The programme ran from January to April and it is hoped that the participants will have reached a standard high enough to obtain the President’s GAISCE Award.

“This project has huge benefits for all partners,” said Ciaran Ward, organiser of the programme for eir. “From our perspective, eir sees this project as a good way to demonstrate being a good corporate citizen.

"Through teaching these teenagers fishing skills, hopefully, some may go on to become future custodians of our rivers and lakes benefitting the participants and, for IFI, it is an opportunity to introduce more young people to angling.”

Brian Beckett, Director of the Eastern River Basin District, Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: “A contributing factor to the success of this eir/IFI initiative is the tremendous support from the angling community, who have given freely of their time through the running of the programme to pass on their knowledge of particular disciplines of angling.

"And, of course, an added benefit is that the mentors on the programme are positive role models for the students.

"It is also hoped that these youngsters will put their newly learned fishing skills into practice and take up a hobby that can be lifelong.”

Kildare   1-12

Derry       2-7

All-Ireland Qualifiers round one

Daniel Flynn's eighth minute wonder goal lit up a thrilling first half in Kildare's All-Ireland qualifier clash with Derry in Owenbeg this afternoon.

In such a vital game that will signal the end of one these county's participation in the summer, both sides have gone at it hammer and thongs in an enthralling affair at the Derry venue.

After some early off the ball skirmishes in which Fergal Conway and Leo McGoldrick were booked, the game began in blistering fashion as Conway and Shay McGuigan swapped points, before Daniel Flynn nudged Kildare ahead with a fine score.

Derry soon hit the first goal of the game as Enda Lynn appeared to get the last touch on a shot from McGuigan. Kildare responded instantaneously with a fine point from Conway, before Flynn hit his wonder goal as he took on the entire Derry defence before lashing a brilliant shot into the top corner. A couple of points in quick succession but Kildare in command, but the Lilywhites were dealt a blow when captain Eoin Doyle received a black card for pulling down the marauding Padraig Cassidy.

Emmet Bradley and Cassidy both raised white flags for the hosts before Kevin Feely responded with a free, but a second goal from Lynn on 19 minutes levelled matters at 1-6 to 2-3. Kildare powered ahead with points from Tommy Moolick and Keith Cribbin, before Jack Doherty and Kildare debutant James Murray traded scores at either end.

Conway smacked over another couple of points to bring his tally to four points, but scores from McGoldrick and Lynn kept Derry within just one point as the break approached, but Feely added another score from a free to double their advantage before half-time.

Flynn returns from injury to star as Kildare blast past Derry in thrilling All-Ireland qualifier

Kildare   2-22

Derry       2-14

All-Ireland Qualifiers round one

After the embarrassing nature of Kildare's Leinster Championship defeat to Carlow a fortnight ago, the Lilywhites responded emphatically by travelling to Owenbeg and dumping Derry out of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Cian O'Neill's side delivered the perfect response in the wake of some criticism as they turned in a brilliant attacking display that was spearheaded by Fergal Conway in the first half and substitute Neill Flynn in the second.

It was a much needed win that ended a losing streak of 12 games that dated back to the Leinster final loss to Dublin almost 12 months ago, and it was the first time that Kildare have tasted this feeling since beating Meath last June.

Daniel Flynn's eighth minute wonder goal lit up a thrilling first half that concluded with Kildare going into the turnaround with a two-point lead.

Mark Donnellan was the pivotal figure of the game in the opening stages of the second half as he pulled off a brilliant save on Bradley before Mick O'Grady replicated his effort by blocking McGuigan's follow up. Donnellan then struck a '45 between the posts before Lynch and David Slattery pointed at either end. Kildare took the initiative after that as the impressive Moolick landed his second score, before Feely set Niall Kelly up to bundle home the visitor's second goal after 44 minutes.

The Lilywhites lost Feely to injury after that, and Derry remained in touch thanks to a clutch of frees from Bradley and a score from Doherty, while substitute Neill Flynn nailed a brilliant score a couple of minutes after his introduction to keep Kildare in command.

The Maynooth man and Johnny Byrne both chalked up excellent scores to push Kildare six clear as the game neared its final passages, which turned out to be quite messy as David Hyland was black carded and Derry's Mark Lynch received a straight red card, prompting referee David Coldrick to add seven minutes of stoppage time.

Scorers for Kildare: N Flynn 0-6(2F), F Conway 0-4, D Flynn 1-1, N Kelly 1-0, P Cribbin, T Moolick and K Feely(2f) 0-2 each, J Byrne, D Slattery, J Murray, K Cribbin and M Donnellan('45) 0-1 each.

Scorers for Derry: E Lynn 2-2, E Bradley 0-4f, M Lynch(2f) and J Doherty 0-2 each, J Kielt, P Cassidy, S McGoldrick and S McGuigan 0-1 each.

Explainer: Who can Kildare get in Monday's All-Ireland qualifier draw?

$
0
0

Kildare's win over Derry this afternoon means that they will be in the hat for the second round of the All-Ireland qualifier draw on Monday morning.

There are still plenty of teams left to earn their place in the second round qualifiers, and Kildare will meet one of the beaten semi-finalists from the four provincial championships.

Already it is confirmed that Clare, Tipperary, Sligo, Leitrim and Monaghan, with the latter obviously being the toughest looking draw on paper. The other teams that will be going into the hat are the losers of the Longford and Dublin game, Donegal and Down, and, most interestingly, Carlow and Laois.

The three aforementioned games will be played tomorrow afternoon.

If Kildare draw a team that was playing in either Division 3 or Division 4 last year, they will be away in that game. If they are first out of the hat and drawn against either Clare, Tipperary, Monaghan or Dublin they will have home advantage.

The draw will take place at 8.30am on Monday morning on Morning Ireland, RTE Radio 1.

Possible teams Kildare can draw:

Clare

Monaghan

Tipperary

Sligo

Leitrim

Dublin/Longford

Donegal/Down

Carlow/Laois

A woman living in the midlands who Naas District Court heard was involved in a single vehicle crash got banned from driving for two years.

The 33-year-old woman with an address in Edenderry, Co Offaly, appeared before Naas District Court, last Thursday. She was charged with driving a car, while exceeding the alcohol limit, at Friarstown, Kildare, on July 1, 2016.

Garda evidence outlined how the accused was stopped following a single vehicle road accident and failed the roadside breath-test.

The court heard how she made full admissions.

Judge Bernadette Owens imposed a two year driving ban on the Lithuanian national, who is currently unemployed. She was convicted and fined €300 with six months to pay.

Recognisances in the event of appeal were set at €250.

North Kildare site zoned for residential sells for a whopping €1.2M per acre

A site in north Kildare was sold at auction last week for more than €4 million after it attracted a large amount of interest.

The 3.4 acre site in Leixlip went under the hammer at auction last Thursday and ended up selling for just under €1.2 million per acre, having attract some intense competition between six bidders in the process. The site has been zoned for residential development and bids began at €1.4 million, where competition saw the price rise by increments of €50,000 and €100,000 before it was placed on the market when it hit €3.8 million.

It was eventually sold for €4.075 following further bids.

Will Coonan, a local auctioneer, remarked that it was above anything he had seen obtained for land in the areas around Maynooth, Celbridge or Leixlip.

The property was purchased by a solicitor in trust.

Leaving meat in hot car puts your family's health at risk

$

People could be putting their health at serious risk by leaving meat, fish and poultry in overheated cars instead of bringing it straight home from the shops, it has been claimed.

One butcher said a chilled chicken could see its temperature rise to over 16 degrees after spending even 10 minutes in a car in the heat of recent days.

Meat not kept chilled properly carries a higher risk of Salmonella and E. coli - which can lead to diarrhoea, abdominal cramping, pain or tenderness as well as nausea and vomiting.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, fresh meat should spend no longer than two hours outside of a refrigerator - with the clock starting to tick the moment it is lifted off the shop shelf rather than the moment it leaves the store.

A Food Safety Authority of Ireland spokeswoman said chilled food should not spend any longer than two hours out of a refrigerator irrespective of whether or not it is in a cooler bag.

“The reason we say two hours max for both a bag and a cooler bag is that it’s one simple message,” the spokeswoman said.

“A cooler bag may well give a bit more time than two hours, but that all depends on the cooler bag and whether or not the person has added ice blocks to it.

"By giving two different times for different bags, there’s a risk that people may get confused and mix them up,” she said.

"It was about pride in Kildare football"- O'Neill delighted as Kildare get back on track in Derry

$
0
0

It was a win that was as badly needed as it was overdue, and Kildare manager Cian O’Neill said afterwards that it didn’t matter what way it came about. It was hugely positive however as 12 different players hit the target for the Lilywhites, with the only line of the field not contributing to the final tally being the full-back line. There was also some great leadership shown throughout from the likes of Fergal Conway, Tommy Moolick and Keith Cribbin, who all stepped up when Paddy Brophy was ruled out just before throw-in with a nasty finger injury and captain Eoin Doyle was lost to a black card midway through the first half.

Speaking after the game, O’Neill said it was vital that Kildare restored some price and showed what they were capable of following the miserable defeat to Carlow 13 days previous.

“It hurt us badly, and in all of that I’m not sure if Carlow got the congratulations they deserved for that performance,” he said.

“We still had to come back and look at ourselves as a manager and a management team. We didn’t come here today for a polished performance, and I’m sure Damien’s men didn’t either. We just needed a win, let’s be brutally honest about it.

“We had the added challenge of the roadtrip, which I actually think suited us. It gave us a chance to bond yesterday on the way up and at the hotel last night. We knew this was our season in a nutshell and you talk about seasons and you talk about your own future then as players and as management, so we needed it badly. We’re delighted.”

So is this the start of a brilliant journey that might lead the Lilywhites to the promised land that is the ‘Super Eights’, or is it merely just a matter of beating an admittedly poor Derry side who began the game without their two best players, Chrissy McKaigue and Brendan Rogers.

It was certainly nice to be watching on as a Kildare team played with so much confidence and skill going forward, even if they did look suspect at the back on occasion.

“That wasn’t a defeat out of the blue – we came off seven defeats in the league, whether we had close matches or not, that was where your league was at,” said O’Neill of ending the run of defeats.

“Then you lose your first round in Leinster, some people bring last year into it then. You can’t argue with that – we just needed a massive win to get us back on track, and it’s some way there anyway.”

“I thought the players were absolutely top class today. The lads came out of the blocks to be fair to them; they were measured, they were calculated. We scored 1-12 in the first half and we actually missed 1-9 or 1-10 the last day. We conceded two very sloppy goals that we wouldn’t be happy with – you saw that yourselves – so we have something to work on. But the lads fought back every time we conceded a goal and we’re happy with that.”

The Kildare manager said that Saturday’s win was about much more than football. It was about putting pride back in the Kildare jersey and reassuring the faithful that this team are much better than what they have shown over the last 12 months.

“It’s the first step, if there wasn’t a win today there would be no step,” remarked O’Neill.

“It’s definitely a starting point for the players to come here and it was a challenge in itself being so far away from home. There was a lot of positivity to take from the match today and it’s great to have two weeks to actually start working on things that can take us hopefully to the next step. It was about more than football – it was about pride, it was about integrity, it was about pride in Kildare football.

“Not just for the lads in the pitch; we let the county… I let the county down as manager of this team. That loss the last day when so much was expected of us, and that’s not where I or the players wanted to leave it this year. So the lads took that there today with a brilliant leadership based performance, and I stress leadership because we’ve been accused of not having that in the past and it was great to see.”

The Ardclough annual indoor bowling triples tournament in honour of the late Tony Hegarty took place on Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd June in the Ardclough GAA hall. With thirty-two teams competing it made for a very hectic schedule to complete the event in the two-day time frame.

Given that it was played on the Bank Holiday weekend and the weather so good also it still managed to draw a good attendance.

There was a lot of great games and plenty of excitement to keep the spectators occupied and happy throughout the event. There were also some shocks along the way as some of the top teams and favourites took a tumble in the early rounds. The biggest shock of the tournament was the inexperienced Abbey Bowls team knocking out Baltinglass/Kiltegan whom many would have highly fancied and favoured to make it to the final at least.

St. Laurence’s also reached the quarter final with a team of newcomers before exiting the competition, which was a great achievement in its own right.

In the Cup final Rathmore saw off the challenge of Rathangan. This was the fourth final in succession that the Rathmore side contested, losing the previous three, so joy at last in a well-deserved victory.

Rathmore: Ann Shaw, Tony Fitzpatrick and Frank Feane.

Rathangan: Paddy Dunne, Eileen Smullen and Tony Smullen.

In the Shield final Kildare defeated Caragh to take the honours. Kildare showed tremendous form throughout the tournament and deserved the victory.

Kildare: Una Downey, Fintan Downey and Mark Caldwell.

Caragh: Phil Ryan, Peter Hunt, Breff O’Rourke and sub Dom Kavanagh.

A special word of thanks must go to the Ardclough catering staff, one of the most difficult tasks of all and they made sure there was no shortage of refreshments and deserve great credit for a job well done.

And congrats to The Ardclough club for a wonderful and well run tournament. Of course lets not forget the teams for their participation in making it all worthwhile.
