Concern about 'significant losses' in sheep farms due to 'severe weather'

$

IFA National Sheep Chairman Sean Dennehy said farmers with hoggets to sell this week are in the' driving seat' and they should shop round fully to make sure they are getting full value as prices are rising by the day, and factories are extremely anxious for stock.

However, the IFA sheep farmer leader said he is very concerned that there are significant losses on some sheep farms as a result of the severe weather over the last week. He said he was very worried in relation to sheep on mountains and hills that were not brought down to lower lands earlier in the week.

In addition, he said significant difficulties are arising on lowland farms where farmers were unable to get ewes and new born lambs out because of the conditions. He said rising temperatures and damp conditions dramatically increase the risk of infections, particularly at lambing.

Mr Dennehy said prices are rising rapidly with €6.00/kg up to 24kgs on offer. He said €5.90 is widely available and paid.

He reports  strong market demand and tight supplies are driving the trade.

He said with Easter less than three weeks away, during the first week of April, factories were looking to procure increased supplies at this stage. In addition, he said there is some pent up demand in the trade due to the weather problems of last week, where the kill had dropped back to only 35,000. He said the factories are extremely anxious for lambs and have told agents to let nothing slip by.

The IFA sheep farmer leader said while spring lamb supplies will be very scarce for Easter, early lamb producers need at least €150 per head to cover the higher costs this year and leave a margin. He said with hoggets at €6.00/kg, butchers, wholesalers and factories would have to offer up to €150 for top quality spring lamb.

Sean Dennehy said some factories have been talking with suppliers about offering €8.00/kg for milk lambs up to 13kgs. He said this may be a good option for some farmers, depending on their grass and work situation as the year progresses.

One  in every six people in Ireland today live on incomes below the poverty line says new report

Over 100,000 people in employment are at risk of poverty in Ireland according to a new report.

Social Justice Ireland says this shocking figure indicates that the employment system is broken and workers’ rights are not being protected or prioritized by policy makers.

Poverty Focus 2018  is the most recent research from award winning think tank Social Justice Ireland. The new annual publication looks at the figures behind poverty in Ireland. It concludes that, overall, one  in every six people in Ireland today live on incomes below the poverty line, making up 16.5% of the population.

This year’s edition of Poverty Focus pays special attention to the working poor as a particularly vulnerable group.

Dr Seán Healy, CEO of Social Justice Ireland said at the launch of this publication:“If people in employment can’t be guaranteed a life free from poverty, then there is something seriously wrong. We have been saying for quite some time now that Ireland’s social contract is broken. This is further proof. The priorities of our policy makers should reflect the will of the people. This is not the will of the Irish people. Policy makers need to take action.”

The research also highlighted how 780,000 people live in poverty in Ireland today. The largest group in poverty are children (26.5% of all those in poverty). That means that one in every four people below the poverty line is a child. People on home duties (including those caring for children, older people etc.) are the next largest group in poverty at 14.7%. The unemployed and  those in employment were at 13.5% and 13.3% respectively.

Co Kildare motorists warned of "strong low-lying sun" today after Bank Holiday weekend

$

By Kim O'Leary

Co Kildare motorists are being urged to take the necessary precautions while out on the roads today due to a strong winter sun and left-over snow with strong winter sun also contributing to many road traffic collisions.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Gardaí are reminding motorists to also be aware of heavy traffic in some areas following the busy bank holiday weekend, with a low lying sun also proving dangerous for motorists.

In a recent Facebook post on their account  Kildare Fire Service has provided tips and advice for motorists, saying: “Driving in low-lying sun is a danger that we come across every day, especially in the Winter months. RTC's are very prominent during this time as the visibility is decreased dramatically driving towards the sun.”

Kildare Fire Service has drawn up a couple of handy tips to aid motorists driving during these times:

1. Wear Sunglasses - leave a pair in your vehicle at all times
2. Keep your windscreen water topped up thus keeping your screen clean.
3. Keep the inside of your windows clean also
4. Do not store paperwork/ rubbish etc on your dash. The sunlight reflects off these items onto your screen making it harder to see through.
5. If you are having trouble seeing due to sunlight, SLOW DOWN.
6. Keep a greater distance from the driver in front of you as it may be harder to see their brake lights.
7. If you can (not always possible), avoid driving during these hours

Speed limits should be halved during Red Weather Warning - Cllrs

$

Members of Maynooth Municipal District are calling on Kildare Co Council to reduce all speed limits by half on all roads in the event of a Red Weather Warning.

The 'Beast from the East' and Storm Emma dumped several feet of snow due to the effect of drifts across the county earlier this month.

Met Eireann issued a rare Red Weather Warning in advance of the weather event.

It was the second time in just over four months for the highest level weather warning to be issued.

A Red Warning was also triggered before Storm Ophelia hit Ireland in mid-October.

The recent 'Beast from the East' and Storm Emma weather events are dominating the upcoming Kildare Co Council's monthly meeting next week.

Kildare County Council’s Crisis Management Team incorporating the Severe Weather Assessment Team met regularly to plan and co-ordinate its response to the conditions.

Councillor Martin Miley and Councillor Deborah Callaghan requested that the Council compliments all those involved in the recent severe weather event i.e. councils own staff, Gardaí, HSE, Civil Defence, the farming community and the
wider community at large for their help and community support.

The politicians also asked that the Council ensures that central government provides
the additional funding to cover the cost to Kildare County Council for the emergency works carried out and that additional funding is made available to repair roads in the county that are disintegrating as a result of the severe weather conditions.

Councillor Tim Durkan asked that the council carry out a full review of all snow handling equipment owned by
Kildare County Council paying particular attention to the feasibility of purchasing a number of high-capacity snow moving machines.

Councillor Carmel Kelly also called on the Council to acknowledge the heroic efforts of volunteers to clean up areas and rescue people during the recent snow storms.

The politician asked that arrangements are made for suitable recognition including compensation, where appropriate.

Transition-year students from Confey College in Leixlip won the Leinster finals of the prestigious CanSat competition, a European Space Agency initiative, which was held in DIT Grangegorman last week.

The Confey College team beat out competition from five other teams to win the coveted prize of Leinster champions and will go on to the national finals in Portlaoise in April.

A CanSat is a simulation of a satellite built inside an empty soft drink can. The challenge for the students is to fit all the major subsystems found in a satellite, such as power, sensors and a communication system, into this minimal volume. The CanSat is then launched to an altitude of 100 metres using a drone – its mission is to measure weather data, speed and acceleration and to make a safe landing using a parachute designed by the students.

Dr Mick McKeever, a Lecturer in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering who coordinated the competition in DIT, says, “The goal of CanSat is to encourage school students to consider careers in science and engineering. The competition engages students in a real space project in a fun and exciting way. It builds life skills such as teamwork, presentation and communication skills, and industry skills such as computer programming, radio communications, data analysis and soldering electronics.”

The CanSat Ireland competition is run by ESERO Ireland in collaboration with CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory and the Institutes of Technology and is co-funded by the European Space Agency and Science Foundation Ireland.

Repeal the Eighth Amendment protestors take to streets of Newbridge and Naas today

$

0

Pro-life campaigners are now in the streets of Naas, as the first part of their campaign in Co Kildare to oppose Repealing the Eighth Amendment.

It is understood that the referendum to Repeal the Eighth Amendment looks likely for May 25, next.

The Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment  is welcoming the recommendations of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment to remove the Amendment in full from the Constitution and introduce legislation to allow access to abortion services.

The Committee is recommending  that legislation should include provision of abortion without restriction as to reason up to 12 weeks as this will provide for the majority of women who seek abortions in Ireland.

Abortion has been illegal in Ireland since the foundation of the State.

Today The Love Both Projects, a Pro-Life Campaign, are having their first visit to Co Kildare.

The roadshow arrived at Nass Townhall at 1pm. It will be  at Newbridge Post Office, Main St at 4pm.

A spokesperson for the LoveBoth Project, Katie Ascough, said: “We are very excited to be bringing the “Lives Saved” Tour to Kildare as part of a nationwide journey that will provide a new perspective on the abortiondebate in Ireland.”

LoveBoth spokesperson Katie Ascough said: “Our message is simple: if Ireland had abortion at a similar rate to other European countries over the past 20 years an estimated 100,000 people would not be alive today – that’s the population of Kilkenny,” said. “What other law in Ireland can you point to that has saved that many lives?”

Meanwhile, in 2016, 3,265 women travelled from Ireland to the UK for abortions.

In Ireland Abortion is banned except where a woman’s life is in immediate danger.

Abortion is not permitted where a woman’s health is affected.

Abortion is not permitted in cases of rape or incest.

Where fatal foetal abnormalities are detected, women are forced to continue their pregnancy to full-term.

Increasing numbers of women obtain the abortion pill online although medical abortion is prohibited and criminalised.
