Deadline for public to have say on future of Ireland's policing is tomorrow

$

There are only two days left for members of the public, interested parties and other stakeholders to use their once in a generation opportunity to have their say on the future of policing in Ireland.

The public consultation phase of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland will come to an end at close of business tomorrow Wednesday, 31st January.

Submissions can be made online on the Commission’s website at policereform.ie, or by post or email, and full details of how to make a submission are available at the policereform.ie website. These submissions will be central to informing the Commission’s deliberations ahead of its report in September 2018.

The Commission, led by chair Kathleen O’Toole, has engaged in an extensive public consultation programme over the past number of months which has involved public meetings and open evenings across the country, meeting with front line Gardai and with a range of community groups and organisations with an interest in reforming policing.

The Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland was established by Government in May 2017 to develop a blueprint for policing in Ireland into the future. The Commission is tasked with undertaking an independent, comprehensive examination of all aspects of policing in Ireland, including all functions currently carried out by An Garda Síochána, as well as the full range of oversight bodies.

Showery conditions are predicted for tonight as the unsettled spell of weather looks set to continue until tomorrow at the very least.

There is an ongoing risk of thunder in some places, though there will be long clear spells, especially across the midlands, south and east. Rather windy for a time with fresh and gusty northwest breezes. There'll be a frost in sheltered spots by dawn with the risk of ice on untreated surfaces. Lowest temperatures of 1-3 degrees.

Gardaí have also warned about the risk of driving in poor conditions, especially when showers of hailstones fall.

Tomorrow will be a bright blustery day with sunshine and passing heavy showers, most of which will occur early on. There'll be a slight risk of thunder. Showers will become isolated by evening and winds will ease. Highest temperatures will range 5-8 degrees, again feeling colder with added wind chill. Frost will set in quickly after dark under clear skies.

Kildare branch of Irish Kidney Association meeting next week

Approximately one in ten Kildare residents have some degree of kidney disease, thankfully few of these will need dialysis or transplant.

For those that do however, support is far more than essential, it is life saving.

The Kildare branch of the Irish Kidney Association provides this support in three ways, financially, emotionally and with information.

Without doubt, we have found that the best of these forms comes from shared experience. There is nothing more encouraging than hearing that someone shared your current health experience and can offer hope for the future,

The next get together will be on February 5 at 7pm in the Celbridge Manor Hotel, Celbridge.

A spokesperson said; "We continue to be successful in our search for outstanding speakers to attend our gatherings and we are confident that Laura Austin a transplant coordinator from Beaumont Hospital will not disappoint.

"To appeal to as many members as possible we have asked her to to focus on “The Transplant List”. How to get on the list? How to stay on the list? Can I improve my chances? Is there anything I can do to make me a better candidate? You get the idea, other than patients who cannot get on a list for medical reasons, this should be of interest to everyone from pre-dialysis to post transplant.

"2018 is the 40th anniversary of the Irish Kidney Association and we hope to raise donor awareness to the highest possible level. By having this meeting in North Kildare.we are really hoping for a good turn out from the immediate are but everyone is welcome and if people are having particular difficulty they can contact Phillip Meagher on 085 250 1718 or donorweek2018@gmail.com."

Jessica Harrington achieves remarkable result in Punchestown as mare wins twice in 5 days

$

It was an interesting move in many ways for trainer Jessica Harrington to entire Wings Like Arion into the Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at Punchestown on Tuesday afternoon just five days after winning in Gowran Park, but it proved a fruitful decision as the impressive six-year-old edged to a thrilling win under jockey Robbie Power.

In a tight finish between three horses, Bee a Beneficiary came home in second and Lady in Lavender was just behind by half a length.

“It was the right decision (to run again so quickly) - I very rarely do that but I thought I had to,” said Harrington following the race.

“Robbie said she was off the bridle all the way down the back and they went much quicker today. He gave him a squeeze going to the third last and she suddenly went on. He said she was actually idling up the run-in and as soon as they started, she felt them coming to her. She had a bit in the locker.

“She'll have a little bit of a break now and then we'll find a similar contest for her. She jumps great which is the brilliant thing about her.

The day belonged to the ever successful duo of Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy, who are enjoying a storming season of results. The pair landed a treble, with the most impressive leg coming in the final race as Poorman’s Hill captured the final race of the day, the 2m6f Handicap Hurdle. It was another notable success for the improving seven-year-old, with Elliott’s assistant, Ian Amond, stating; “He was a good buy and he's won six for us now. He's been a star so far and there might be one or two left in him.

“He can mix it between both fences and hurdles and it's great when they can back up like that, and he's done it twice now.”

That followed up wins for Sir Carno and Godthynemilan for the Gigginstown trainer. There were also wins on the day for trainer Charles Byrnes with Oscar Lantern and trainer Denis Hogan with Moyhenna, while Eagle Lion won the 2m4f Maiden Hurdle for trainer Patrick Kelly.

A Criminology student was not banned from driving at Naas District Court today, for not having insurance.

Evidence was given how on January 4, 2017, at the M7, Johnstown, the driver was stopped for having no car insurance and no tax, along with no Learner Plates, and was driving unaccompanied.

Defence Solicitor, Timmy Kennelly, outlined how the accused had to visit her sick mother.

Judge Elizabeth Mac Mahon ordered that she was convicted and fined €100 for failing to display L-Plates and €150 for no insurance with six months to pay.

The late Jimmy McLoughlin laid to rest: “A  man of great deeds and stories” with the GAA imbedded in his DNA!

$

0

Even aged 80, you would see Jimmy McLoughlin doing linesman at the grounds in Ballymore GFC. He was a GAA man to the core, the DNA imbedded from the day he learned to walk. GAA and sport of all kind were his passion but preceding those were his family and his faith. And of course, Fianna Fáil!

Outgoing President of the local Cumann, his hearse was flanked today by Deputies Fiona O Loughlin and James Lawless; Cllrs Martin Miley, Mayor of Kildare and Carmel Kelly along with Brian Larkin Senior from Naas Cumann; DJ Moore C15 member and Brian Doyle, Sec Wolfe Tone Cumann  and local members.

His wife Ann, along with children Áine, Seamus, Margaret and Sinéad have no doubt, relived and recounted the many funny stories told, of and about Jimmy, over the past few days. Approaching his 83rd birthday in March, Jimmy enjoyed good health until recent months but was delighted to be home for Christmas and even dropped into his favourite haunt, Paddy Murphy’s for a little tipple of whiskey last week!

Jimmy far right with John the Butcher Murphy (1953 three in a row team) and brother Anthony.

He played with the 1968 Ballymore side who claimed a Junior Co title but notably, has served as club secretary and selector for years, and served as a selector with Kildare Juniors also.

He and the late Frank Gorman were instrumental in securing Tommy Clarke from Manor Kilbride to train the Ballymore side for what was one of their productive patches, with back to back wins in the 1985 Junior County Championship and the Intermediate title in ’86. But in all things GAA (and indeed, all aspects of his life), Jimmy gave 100 per cent – and if it was doing umpire or linesman, selling tickets or fundraising, following his local team to every venue in the country, Jimmy Mc was there. You’d see him sporting his Ballymore jumper and v-neck knitted jumpers where his preferred choice of style!

Sad to note, his neighbour, GAA, FF and farming buddy, Pat Browne also of Bolebeg, died a year before him. When it came to canvassing for FF, they came as a package and went out in all weathers and political environments! He contributed massively to the work involved in planning and completing the new stand development at the local GAA grounds.

The late Jimmy planting a tree in the grounds of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Photo C Dennison

In 2015, he was recognised at the Credit Union Ballymore Eustace People of the Year Awards for his lifetime contribution to the community. Humorously, he recounted a story that night of how his love for the GAA nearly ruined his marriage. “We were playing Leixlip in the Championship  when I was managing the Ballymore seniors but Ann and I had a holiday planned in the Isle of Man that year. I knew if I didn’t go on the holiday, I’d be moving out to the cowshed…..

"And despite, BME being up 8 points at half time, they lost to Leixlip in the end. I always felt if I’d been there, they mightn’t have lost – but it was either the Isle of Man or the cowshed!” (wise choice, Jimmy).

He also coached an U15 Ballymore side to Bord na nÓg to win the South Leinster League, this was one of his proudest achievements. Jimmy represented Ballymore Handball at county board level,  and was one of the more prominent players in the popular pub tournaments. He helped to set up a very successful boxing club locally during the ‘70s having been a good boxer in his youth during the 1940’s.

With young McAtamney and the Leinster Minor Club at BME Club grounds

Along with the late John Murphy of Longhouse, Jimmy compiled a series of interviews for the parish magazine, the Echo, predecessor to the Ballymore Bugle and notabley, contributed to, and fundraised for Scoil Mhuire, the Church of the Immaculate Conception major renovation project and of course, was on the graveyard committee for St Mary’s Cemetery, He proudly took his daughter to Croke Park – “I lost her once but I never lost her again!” he said.

In latter years, he was delighted to do school runs with his treasured grandchildren and no doubt, fed them on stories of the glory years of Ballymore GAA. Recently elected Ballymore GFC  Chairwoman, Natasha Graham, who made history by being the first female to chair the club said of Jimmy:

“Evey time I hear his name mentioned, I can picture him standing at the goal mouth with the biggest smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He loved a bit of craic and he loved GAA! He was one of the gentlest men I knew and a true Ballymore GAA man. He will always have a special place in people’s hearts and memories in Ballymore. My sincere condolences to Ann, Margaret, Aine, Seamus, Sinead and family on the passing of their dearly loved Dad and Granddad”

The late Jimmy McLoughlin

He is further mourned by his brothers Anthony and John, sister Betty, sons-in-law, Mark, Pearse and Kenny, daughter-in-law Sue, adored grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives and friends.

His proudest achievements were undoubtedly his family, second only to the GAA. But he was a man of devout faith and Monsignor Wilson noted his many “great deeds” as huge crowds attended his wake, funeral service and burial today.

However, I am going to leave the last few words to Jimmy himself:

“Would somebody, anybody out there sort the damned Bolebeg laneway?! I’m fighting to have it surfaced and sorted for all my married lifetime…..”

Rest in peace, Jimmy McLoughlin, late of Bolebeg, Ballymore but with a second address at Ballymore GFC grounds…….

Husband makes heart-breaking Funeral tribute to Prosperous teacher (29)

$

An inspirational Prosperous teacher married her fiance in hospital just two days before she passed away aged just 29.

Kathy Casey Byrne was a gifted  teacher and sports coach to pupils at Scoil an Linbh Iosa, Prosperous.

However the Co Limerick native was diagnosed with cancer soon after Christmas and passed away less than three weeks later.

Two days before her death, Kathy exchanged wedding vows with fiance Noel Byrne in a chapel at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin.

Noel read out an incredibly moving letter at her funeral Mass in St. Molua’s Church in Ardagh which was attended by many people from Prosperous.

Noel told of Kathy's unique love for teaching in Prosperous.

He said: “Your passion for teaching and the energy you brought to Prosperous was inspirational.
"You had such love for Scoil an Linbh Iosa, its staff and students. I’ve been told you were the heart of the school, that you brought such positivity and a unique perspective to it - in the classroom and the staff room, from your school plays, to your dancing, the basketball court and the hurling field."

Noel then described the wedding just two days before her passing in the Mater Hospital.

"The smile on your face as you walked into the Oratory in the Mater Private in your Jenny Packham dress with your mink nail polish - your radiance, your beauty - it’s everything I’d hoped for and more. The love was never stronger, the joy palpable. It’s a moment that will never be forgotten.
"You held out long enough to get that walk down the aisle, the moment of “I do”, the matrimonial kiss.
"You leave behind a heartbroken family, devastated friends and soul crushed colleagues. You’d given so much and had so much more yet to give."

Noel today posted the Letter on his Facebook page and joked that Kathy was 'probably cringing' at the words.

Here is the Letter reproduced in full with Noel's permission:

A Letter To My Wife

To my darling wife, my pretty lady,

We always said we were a team, but now I’ve lost my captain.

I’m writing this in your bedroom in Ardagh, surrounded by everything that encapsulates your life over the past 29 years. A room the essence of you.

We’ve been through so much since we first met in Mary I on the very first day of college in 2006. We’ve been to so many places, done so many things, and achieved so much, it’s hard to know where to begin.

I think it’s the little things I’ll miss the most though:
- Your 4 minute limit on boiling an egg,
- Your obsession with silky labels,
- Your love of the snooze button,
- Your penchant for Tommy K,
- And your grá for a glass of Sauv Blanc, no ice.

I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that you’re gone. I so badly want this to be a dream, but, in reality, it’s a real-life nightmare. People say there are no words. The truth of it is there are - unfair, undeserved, one hundred percent unnecessary.

I’m not writing this letter for you to bemoan the cruelties of this world though, I’m writing to tell the world just how great you are. You hold my hopes, my dreams, my love. You’re one of a kind and I’m lucky to call you my wife.

As one of your favourite songs says, “Life is not tried, it is merely survived if you’re standing outside the fire.” You seem to embody these cheesy Garth Brooks lyrics - you’re never afraid to take that jump.

A proud Limerick woman, I knew the Green & Red would eventually creep in. At first, you’d wear the Limerick jersey to the Mayo match, then came the wristband in Croker, eventually followed with you pulling on the green and red jersey yourself. You then knew the Saw Doctors lyrics much better than I, with the Mayo obsession culminating with us driving a green and red rickshaw around India called Mayo4Sam.

You had no fears when it came to travelling, firm in the belief that it broadens the mind. We ended up in some odd situations on our holidays, often seeking out something different. When I’d suggest yet another random activity, you were sometimes not so keen but you always said yes - you’d take the risk, accept the challenge. It probably helped too that I’d sell it by promising plenty of beach time.

From sleeping under the stars in the Sahara Desert, and waking up covered in sand, walking along a plank on a cliffside 7,000 feet in the air in central China and even those 5 ever so surreal days we spent in North Korea, where may I add, you frequently asked questions you probably shouldn’t in such a country, we saw much of the world together in a unique way, and we had plans for so much more. Our Scratch Map now left unscratched.

Your passion for teaching and the energy you brought to Prosperous was inspirational. You had such love for Scoil an Linbh Iosa, its staff and students. I’ve been told you were the heart of the school, that you brought such positivity and a unique perspective to it - in the classroom and the staff room, from your school plays, to your dancing, the basketball court and the hurling field.

The plans we had for the future - a house in a Naas, three kids - Keegan, Kelly and Casey - the name we knew people would question. They’d support Limerick in the hurling, Mayo in the football. Before any of that though, our planned wedding on August 3rd - for 2018 was meant to be the year we got married.

Last Sunday, on the eve of our 11th anniversary and seven months ahead of time, we fulfilled our wish.

We always wanted a wedding a little different, but neither of us could have imagined what unfolded. Last Saturday, from the moment we decided to kick off a chain of events that would go on to include high court judges and government ministers, you were beaming. As adrenaline and euphoria kicked in, the illness took a backseat and wedding planner Kathy kicked in - handing out orders left and right - like normal really.

The smile on your face as you walked into the Oratory in the Mater Private in your Jenny Packham dress with your mink nail polish - your radiance, your beauty - it’s everything I’d hoped for and more. The love was never stronger, the joy palpable. It’s a moment that will never be forgotten.

You held out long enough to get that walk down the aisle, the moment of “I do”, the matrimonial kiss.

You leave behind a heartbroken family, devastated friends and soul crushed colleagues. You’d given so much and had so much more yet to give.

While you’ve taken this final journey on your own, departing ahead of time, I know you’ll be waiting for me in Arrivals when my time too finally comes. While you wait, I know you’ll meet all those that have gone before. You’ll also finally get to meet my dad, and fill him in on the last 11 years. Tell him I said hi.

You told me that when you were gone, I’d need to take on your strength, and it’s something that I hope I can do, if even a fraction. Your approach to tackling the past three weeks is testament to your character - your strength, bravery, determination, and positivity.

You’re an inspiration, KC.

You’re my travel companion, my jiving partner, my secret keeper, my best friend, my wife.

I love you, pretty lady, always have, always will.

A joint operation between Gardaí and Revenue authorities uncovered drugs worth an estimated €240,000 stuff inside a large child's toy this afternoon.

As part of on-going joint investigations targeting drug importations in the West Dublin area, an operation carried out by the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau, Finglas Drugs Unit and the Revenue’s Customs Service this morning searched a house in Dublin 15.

During this operation, a package was seized by Customs, which contained approximately 11.5Kgs of Herbal Cannabis with an estimated street value of €230,000 euro (subject to analysis), together with approximately €10,000-euro worth of cocaine (subject to analysis) and a small quantity of cash. The cannabis had been concealed within a large soft toy.

A 55-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is detained under Section 2 of The Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at Blanchardstown Garda Station.
