Waterford GAA stars present lovely gifts to Kildare fan Jennifer following her touching gesture on Saturday

$

It has been an eventful few days in the life of the country's biggest GAA fan Jennifer Malone, and yesterday she was rewarded once again for her unwavering support to our national sport.

17-year-old Jennifer was the darling of the nation over the weekend when she was pictured by Dylan McIlwaine of the Kilkenny People consoling Waterford hurler Pauric Mahony following the Déise's All-Ireland semi-final loss to Kilkenny on Saturday evening. The corner-forward had just seen a last minute free that would have leveled the game drop agonisingly short, and he was fraught with disappointment shortly after the full-time whistle.

Jennifer, who is diagnosed as having down syndrome, was the first to console the Waterford freetaker, and it attracted huge attention and good will from GAA fans around the country.

The Dublin GAA Supporters Club were so touched by her kind act that they announced that they will be sending Jennifer a Kildare GAA jersey with 'Jennifer, Kidare #1 Supporter' on the back.

"What Jennifer has done touched the hearts of GAA supporters around the nation", said All Dublin GAA Fans member Richie Larkin.

"I got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I first saw the photo. My late brother also had Down Syndrome, and we tragically lost him 10 years ago.

"This little girl has shown us all what true passion and sportsmanship is. Rivalries aside, we're one big family in the GAA."

The members of the defeated Waterford team were just as smitten with the young Clane woman, and they have offered up a very kind gesture of their own. The Déise players have sent up a hurley and a framed picture of Donna consoling Mahony following the full-time whistle, while she was also given the jersey that Mahony was wearing in the defeat to the Cats.

"Well not only are the great dublin fans rewarding Jennifer with a special signed Jersey. We met Karen from club Deise the Waterford supporter's club in Naas this evening and she presented Jennifer with a signed hurl. A beautiful framed photo signed by Pauric Mahony and the Jersey he wore on Saturday which Jennifer insisted on wearing as soon as we got in the car. Just wow", said Jennifer's mother Donna on her facebook page following the touching gesture.

Search continues for man who went on rampage at Naas Hospital

Gardaí in Co Kildare are  still searching for a man who went on a rampage in Naas Hospital over the weekend smashing glass and causing people to flee in panic.

The drunken man, from Co Kildare, was told to wait in the hospital waiting room. He returned at about 10.15pm on Saturday night, armed with two hammers, and smashed glass.

Gardaí in Naas have 'ascertained the identification' of the man but are still searching for him.

A Co Kildare woman, who was one of about 20 people waiting at A&E said: "We were waiting since five and it happened at about 10. There was a young child present about seven years of age who was hiding and another young girl who was injured after being playing football and they locked themselves in the bathrooms. Myself and another woman were hiding in behind the vending machines and others were just running anywhere they could get to. There was about 20 of us there in total. He didn't say anything that I could hear, there was just a lot of glass shattering all over the place. It sounded like gun shots to be honest. It lasted about two minutes but it was the longest two minutes ever"

A description of a tall man with blonde or fair hair with a 'scruffy' appearance has been given.

It is understood the man is in his thirties.

A statement from Naas General Hospital said: "Naas General Hospital can confirm that an incident of criminal damage occurred in the Emergency Department on Saturday night. This matter is being investigated by the Gardaí. The hospital regrets any distress which was caused to patients as a result of this incident."

Celbridge, Nass, Confey and Leixlip all set to battle for quarter-final places in SFC replays tonight

$

It's an unusual Wednesday night for Kildare GAA as two major Senior Championship games are down for decision this evening following a frantic weekend of action.

Leixlip and Confey are due to meet in Kilcock this evening at 7.30pm after the two sides finished level on Sunday afternoon in their round 2 clash. A last minute Ciaran Lyons free earned Confey a draw after they looked out of sorts for large swathes of that encounter, and the winner of tonight's replay will progress into the county quarter-finals alongside Sarsfields and Moorefield and the winners of tonight's other game between Celbridge and Naas.

The north Kildare side and the County Town team played out an enthralling draw in Newbridge on Saturday evening that finished 2-13 to 0-19, with David Hughes landing a free in the dying minutes to level matters for Celbridge and ensure they didn't have to face the prospect of playing a round 3 game to keep their championship hopes alive.

Throw-in for that game in Hawkfield is at 8pm tonight.

Paramedic services for Naas Hospital one of many failing to meet HSE guidelines when transferring patients

$
0
0

Naas Hospital is one of 22 hospitals nationwide where paramedics are struggling to get patients into emergency departments in the targeted amount of time.

Out of the 26 hospitals nationwide that were examined by the HSE in May, only four of them were meeting the standard patient handover time that the health service set out. There is a 20 minute window in which it is expected that paramedics arrive at the emergency department, hand over their patient, get their trolley back and then take to the road once again to respond to further call-outs. The HSE has set a target for each hospital to have patients handed over in a 20 minute window at least 50% of the time.

Naas Hospital meets that criteria 36.6% of the time, while 67.5% of patients are handed over and dealt with in the space of 30 minutes. Out of 681 call-outs, a total of 17 patients took more than an hour to be properly handed over to the ED at Naas Hospital, which held up the ambulance service from getting back on the road.

ED overcrowding is the reason behind such delays, though Naas Hospital compares quite favourably when it comes to patient handover.

The Emergency Department in Galway Hospital is the worst performing in the country, with just 8% of patients being handed over in the 20 minute window. Conversely, Tallaght Hospital is the best performing hospital nationwide when it comes to patient handovers, with 58% of ambulance services getting their business done in the 20 minute period.

Fianna Fáil TD Bill Kelleher believes that it is neither the ambulance services fault or the hospitals fault when it comes to transferring patients, and he states that many hospitals are experiencing ongoing difficulties in emergency departments due to a lack of resources.

“Of course missing turnaround targets has a knock on effect for the ambulance service as it makes it harder to respond to new call outs in the target time if paramedics are delayed at hospitals.

“Unsurprisingly, many of the hospitals with low turnaround rates also experience overcrowding in their Emergency Departments. The delays in transferring patients are clearly not the fault of the ambulance service. Rather there are symptomatic of the ongoing difficulties in our acute hospitals,” concluded Deputy Kelleher.

Rainfall set to continue for the rest of the night but tomorrow promises to be a better day

$

It is going to be a very damp evening around Kildare as the eastern side of the country is set to be hit with the worst of the rainfall for the remainder of the day.

The rain will be heavy at times, with few dry spells peaking through during the evening, and it will become dark quite early on as a result. The showers will continue overnight, but as the night continues the rain will become a bit lighter and showers will be more intermittent. Overnight temperatures will fall to around 12-15 degrees, while winds will be light.

It's good news in regards to the weather tomorrow as things are set to brighten up a bit and showers will be scarce. It will be dull to begin with in the morning time but it will gradually become brighter and temperatures will reach around 18-21 degrees.

Kildare-based company Glanbia has posted sizeable profits once again this year, but it is the nutritional supplements arm of the manufacturer that is becoming increasingly important to their revenue.

Global Performance Nutrition, which is part of the Glanbia chain, have recorded profits amounting to €81.7 million in the first six months of this year, which is an increase of 35%.

GPN is the number world's largest performance nutrition portfolio, and popular brands such as BSN, Optimum Nutrition and Isopure are among the well known names in the fitness industry that are manufactured by GPN.

The nutritional arm of Glanbia is now their most profitable area as they made made earnings of €58 million before interest tax in the first six months of 2016, while Dairy Ireland- another branch of Glanbia that provides milk and other dairy products- took in just €17.7 million before tax, despite a 1.1% increase in profits.

"Sales of performance nutrition brands and value-added nutritional ingredients showed good growth in the first half of 2016 delivering on our vision to be a leading nutrition business," said Glanbia managing director Siobhán Talbot

"Global dairy markets remain weak and continue to be a challenge for parts of the business, however the diversity of the Glanbia portfolio has enabled us to navigate this and we reiterate guidance for the full year of adjusted earnings per share growth of 8pc to 10pc on a constant currency basis," she concluded.

Glanbia run a large manufacturing plant in Ballitore where there are currently 55 staff employed, though there were a number of redundancies made to the workforce earlier this year.
