Racing stars Johnny Murtagh, Barry Geraghty, Ruby Walsh, Patrick Mullins, Rachael Blackmore, Jamie Codd, Chris Hayes, Niall ‘Slippers’ Madden, Willie McCreery, Sandra Hughes and Shane Foley are just some of the jockeys and trainers who have signed up for the sixth annual Jog for Jockeys 5km and 10km races at the Curragh Racecourse on Sunday.

Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas winning jockey, Shane Foley was first jockey home in the 2015 10km race and is out to defend his title in this unique race at the Curragh Racecourse. The competition for the winning racing yard or stud farm team in the 5km is expected to be hotly contested. Each winning team member will each receive a €40 voucher, kindly sponsored by TRI Equestrian and a photoshoot for the yard with Alisha Flood. Teams already signed-up are: Sandra Hughes, Gordon Elliott, Ken Condon, Willie McCreery, Richard Brabazon, Darren Bunyan, Michael Halford, Alan Fleming and Johnny Murtagh.

Ex-jockey Ken Whelan will act as MC and call both races to order and Dervla Duffy, National Elite 57kg Irish boxing champion will be on-site to provide a boxing-style warm-up. Start time for 10km run is 11am and the 5km runners will begin at 11:20am.

Runners can still register online at www.jogforjockeys.ie for €20 or on the morning of the race at the Curragh Racecourse entrance building for €25. The registration desk will open at 8:30am. All monies raised will be donated to Irish Injured Jockeys. Sponsorship cards are also available online and from reception in Horse Racing Ireland at Ballymany, the Curragh, Co. Kildare.

Prizes will be awarded to the first three males and females home in both races and there will also be children’s prizes and a team prize for the 5km and 10km along with this year’s new category for the winning racing yard or stud farm in the 5km race.

Any runners who bring their race number to the Curragh for racing later that afternoon will get free entry to the Longines Irish Champions Weekend Trials meeting, featuring the Galileo Futurity Stakes and Debutante Stakes. The first race is at 2.15pm.

Leading National Hunt Jockey, Barry Geraghty said: “I’ve run both 5km and 10km routes at Jog for Jockeys over the past five years. Whether you are a walker, jogger or serious runner, I’d encourage everyone to give Jog for Jockeys a go next Sunday. There is a great atmosphere and there is good bit of rivalry between the jockeys and trainers.  More importantly, it’s for a really worthy cause. Irish Injured Jockeys provide vital support for jockeys – all funds raised go to the injured riders who are in most need of support.”

Michael Higgins, General Manager of Irish Injured Jockeys said: “With just a week to go, I’d urge as many runners and walkers to register for the 5km or 10km at www.jogforjockeys.ie. It’s a great opportunity to walk, jog or run around the iconic Curragh Racecourse and meet lots of racing stars along the routes. Online entry costs €20 or entry on the day costs €25, for either route. A team of five is €100, with the three best times to count. Children under 16 can run for free but if they would like to be in with a chance to win a prize, they can register at the junior rate of €10. We had a great turnout last year and we’re hoping for even more support this year.”

All runners will receive a race t-shirt and regardless of distance, all participants will be provided with timing chips to record accurate race times. Free refreshments will also be provided.

Golf ace Rory donates more than €600k to to two Kildare charities

Two Co Kildare charities will share almost €1m donated by golfer Rory McIlroy following the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at the K Club.

McIlroy's charity, The Rory Foundation raised a total of €951,000 for Barretstown and Jack & Jill Foundation. Dublin-based LauraLynn Children’s Hospice also benefitted.

Each charity will receive €317,000 to go towards specific projects.

Barretstown said it will direct their funding towards a new dining hall at their Naas campus.

The Jack and Jill Foundation’s donation will go towards more than 19,800 hours of home nursing care and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice will have enough money to provide two Clinical Nurse Specialist Salaries, auxiliary expenses and administration for over two years.

McIlroy said: “While winning the Irish Open this year meant a lot to me, being able to give my prize money to three local children’s charities made it all feel much more special.

"I can think of no charities as worthy or deserving of support than Barretstown, the Jack & Jill Foundation and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

"I’m so proud of how much my Foundation raised and I’m already looking forward to new projects in 2017.”

CEO of Barretstown Dee Ahearne said: “Barretstown is absolutely thrilled with the amazing amount being donated by the Rory Foundation from the Irish Open. On behalf of those children and their families, we would like to say a huge Barretstown ‘Thank You’ to Rory and all the team in the Foundation whose hard work behind the scenes made the Irish Open and the other events surrounding it such a success.

"The impact this funding will have on the lives of the children with serious illness we serve will be huge. We will be directing the funding towards Barretstown’s new dining hall which is the single largest new project on site since we opened over 20 years ago. Our Dining Hall is the heart of camp and serves over 2,500 campers annually.”

CEO of the Jack & Jill Foundation Jonathan Irwin said;

“This €317,000 donation from the Rory Foundation is literally a gift of time to the families under our wing, with every cent being spent directly on the 280 families under our wing and funding 19,813 hours of home nursing care at €16 per hour. Typically Jack & Jill funds up to 64 hours of home nursing care per month at a cost of up to €1,024 per family, so this money will make a big difference. To put it into context nationally and locally, that’s over 70 hours for each family under our wing today and the Rory Foundation donation will support the child and family with home nursing care and respite, county by county. What this golf and charity champion has gifted to families is time to do the ‘normal’ things that others take for granted - I should know as I’ve walked this pathway - like a full night’s sleep or a day out with the healthy siblings, safe in the knowledge that their sick child is being well cared for at home by one of our nurses. Furthermore, in choosing Jack & Jill, Rory has extended a hand of friendship to our families which gives them a real boost knowing that a golf and charity champion like this is on their side. The money and awareness he has raised for Jack & Jill is breathtaking and I want to thank everyone behind the Rory Foundation, especially Barry Funston.”

CEO of LauraLynn Children’s Hospice Sharon Morrow said; “

“We are so grateful to be a beneficiary of the Rory Foundation, Irish Open initiative and for the awareness it has enabled us raise about the services we provide to children with life-limiting conditions and their families. The €317,000 donation we are receiving is beyond generous. It will go towards the development of the LauraLynn@HOME programme, offering hands-on clinical care to children and their families in the home. We plan to develop a new symptom management team, spearheaded by 2 clinical nurse specialists, which will offer choice to families who wish to avail of symptom management care in their home. From the Board and team at LauraLynn, as well as the children and their families, we would like to wish our sincerest thanks to Rory and the Rory Foundation team, as well as all those who donated during the Irish Open.”

Tickets for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 2017 are on sale now from www.dubaidutyfreeirishopen.com. The event will take place at Portstewart Golf Club from the 6th to the 9th of July and a percentage of ticket sales will go to the Rory Foundation.

Experts looking for bee hives in Co Kildare for research project

$

0

Scientists at NUI Galway have appealed for help in studying whether native Irish honey bees still exist in the wild.

The researchers are keen to find hives or colonies in garden sheds, abandoned houses and castles, woodlands, houses and outbuildings.

Already over 20 hives have been reported by the public, and a further seven long-term colonies have also been notified to the team.

Honey bees play a vital role in the pollination of crops and flowers, but populations are declining due to pesticides, disease and loss of natural habitat.

At least three bee species have become extinct in Ireland within the last 80 years and it is reported that around one third of Ireland’s 98 existing bee species having become endangered.

Scientists think that if they still exist, the native Irish honey bees' gene pool may be used to combat a mite which is destroying hives all around the globe.

"Ideally we would like to identify hives that people know have been continually active for periods of more than two-three years", said Professor Grace McCormack, of NUI Galway's Zoology Department, who is leading the project.

If you think you know where there could be a wild hive you can email nuigbeeresearch@gmail.com, call 091 494490 or visit the Bee Genes Facebook Page.
