Kildare Co Council has been asked to reconsider closing the R415 Kilmeague Village to Allenwood Cross Roads under the Roads Act, 1993.
The route will be shut to the public from Tuesday 27 March until Thursday 27 September.
The closure is required to facilitate the laying of a new watermain pipeline.
Diversions will be in place and will be clearly signposted, as agreed with the Council and An Garda Síochána.
Emergency access and pedestrian access will be maintained.
However local councillors said the road closure will be very disruptive for residents and local businesses.
Councillor Murty Aspell asked that the Council consult with the residents and businesses of Allenwood and Kilmeague in relation to the road closure for six months due to Irish Water laying pipes as this is going to be a very disruptive time for both residents and businesses.
Councillor Stafford requested that the municipal district office explore with Irish Water an alternative to closing the R415 from Allenwood to Kilmeague and devise a traffic management plan that would limit the disruption to the one hundred and forty houses and businesses located on the road at this location.
Councillor McCabe called on the Council to organise a public meeting with Irish Water and council officials in Allen Hall, to discuss the upcoming water works in the Kilmeague/Allenwood district to discuss the short term consequences and long term benefits for the local residents and businesses so that a mutually beneficial strategy can be arranged to move forward with this difficult process?
