A Co Kildare teenager who has been in a wheelchair from a young age is delighted at the return of one dog that has greatly enhanced his quality of life.
A rescue dog, Rosy, a brown collie, went missing from Allenwood, on Friday last. The dog, a great companion for Marty Byrne, a 14- year-old student at St Farnans, with Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida, did not return until 5am, the next morning. Marty alerted his parents that nine - year-old Rosy had returned.
Marty's mother, Colette Byrne said: "Although she is not an assistance dog, she was trained to push my son in his wheelchair when he was younger. He is getting stronger now, so it is more difficult for her. Rosy just idolises Marty."
She spoke of Marty's devastation on discovering that his beloved pet had gone missing.
Ms Byrne said: " If Rosy is in the house with Marty, she will sit beside him and lick him. We drove all around Friday night looking for Rosy. She is home now, she was a bit sheepish returning."
