Extra penalty points are 'massive problem' for taxi driver - Naas court hears

A taxi driver who was brought to court for not paying a speeding fine said it was very unfair that extra penalty points would be added to his driving licence.

The defendant, who appeared before Naas District Court, claimed he had never received the €80 speeding fine in the post.

A speeding offence carries a fixed fine of €80 as well as three penalty points.

However if you don't pay the fine and the issue goes to court, you will automatically receive five penalty points and a fine up to a maximum of €1,000.

The taxi driver told Judge Desmond Zaidan: "My livelihood depends on driving. I already have five penalty points on my licence and I will be very close to disqualification if I get another five.

He added: "The additional penalty points will be a massive problem for me."

Judge Zaidan said that the whole area of how speeding fines are processed needs to be 'overhauled'.

The taxi driver decided to contest the case and was given a hearing date in June.
