The funeral of the man who died after an ambulance was engulfed in flames at Naas Hospital on Thursday afternoon is due to take place this afternoon.

Christopher Byrne was a patient in the ambulance that caught fire following an explosion in the vehicle outside the Emergency Department at the hospital. Two paramedics were also injured in the blast, but they have both been released from hospital after receiving treatment.

The 78-year-old's funeral takes place this afternoon in his home village of Suncroft. His remains will be taken to St Brigid's Church, the Curragh, for requiem mass at 2pm and his body will be buried at Dunlavin Cemetery.

Mr Byrne has been described as a gentleman by friends and family, and he is survived by his five children Lil, Thomas, Fran, Christopher and Sarah.

Investigations have been launched into the cause of the explosion on Thursday, and experts believe it may have been an oxygen tank that blew up in the ambulance.
