Co Kildare youth club desperately looking for volunteers

Robertstown Youth Club are in an urgent drive for volunteers from the surrounding community.

Club leaders Katie Murphy and Lorraine Morrin need five more volunteers to enable them to operate from the end of October to the end of March for young people in 6th class and 1st year.

With the changes to the Garda vetting process all adults that wish to support young people must go through the recruitment, vetting and training before they can work with or support young people as part of the club.

Training is fully supported by a staff person in the area and will be done to accommodate the volunteers who are able to commit to helping the club get up and running again.

The schedule of three weeks on and two weeks off will enable volunteers to plan around the club and ensure the 10 to 15 young people get the maximum from their time.

The club opens one night a week from between an hour to an hour and a half.

Tasks and activities are all pre planned and prepared by the team of volunteers so there are no surprises on the night.

Katie said: “I was a member of the club and loved having that social time together where we got to hang out and learn from the volunteers.

"We need support from the adults in the town to make this happen, the hard work is done we just need a few more volunteers to help on the nights.”

Lorraine added: “There is nothing for the young people in Robertstown to do in the evenings except hang about the canal and this is an alternative that is great for them and the community and will be a real shame if we can’t get volunteers to urgently help us.”
