The Judge warned a man who had spent eight days in custody that he could rewrite Shakespeare in Love.

The man who resides in Newbridge was in custody for eight days following three separate incidents of Gardaí calling to his home, following allegations of breaching a safety order.

Evidence was given in court that there was no violence but that the accused's wife said that he was drunk. There were no allegations of violence.

The court heard how he was 'quite docile but alcohol had been taken.'

On another occasion the accused's wife said she was in 'fear' when he was drunk.

Garda Superintendent Martin Walker outlined to the court how he had spoken with the accused's wife and determined that she no longer wants contact with him.

The court heard how he has no previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Conal Boyce said that the accused's wife does not want to see him locked up but that he leaves her alone.

The accused in court on Thursday said: "I love her."

The 35- year-old man is employed in the security business.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: " My concern is that he is in love and if he gets drunk again. When sober he will stay away."

Addressing the accused, Judge Zaidan said: "You will rewrite Shakespeare in Love, if I send you to prison, it will be Romeo and Juliet revisited."

Judge Zaidan ordered him not to have any contact with his wife. He was released on bail of €400 and the case was adjourned until October 20 for a probation report.
