Yet another accident occurred on Sunday last at Perry Street Crossroads, between Ballymore Eustace and Hollywood.
The two car collision was attended by Gardaí from Kilcullen Garda Station albeit thankfully, no injuries were incurred.
The junction has been central to several and more frequent motor accidents over recent months, with one accident necessitating the attendance of emergency services for several hours, and one person sustaining serious injuries.
The issue seems to be that drivers travelling the L2026 from the N81 (Silverhills Road) and driving towards the R413 to Kilcullen fail to observe the Stop sign. As you can see from the photo below, those not familiar and even those who do know the route, don't seem to be aware of the approaching junction, in which they have to stop and yield to drivers on the L2026.
Despite the unbroken line being painted in recent months, a dip in the road may hinder motorists seeing the Stop sign as they approach the crossroads, and fail to brake in time (see above photo).
The video here shows how a local woman who was driving on the main road (L411) and had the right of way, yet a car coming from the L2026 drove straight through without even braking, totally ignoring or being unaware of the need to stop.
Locals led by Suzanne Byrne of BME Boarding Kennels and Cattery, and local election candidate Evie Sammon, are currently circulating a petition, which is currently available in local shops, Elizabeth's Hair Salon, Lu's Take Away and Langan's Butchers.
Anyone driving these routes are asked to sign the petition. Deputy Martin Heydon met with locals last month at the junction to assess the sight lights and options for improvement. Gardaí have raised the matter with the Council and it is hoped that further traffic calming and safety measures will be in place.
Motorists and pedestrians are at risk!
