Councillor Morgan McCabe has asked Kildare Co Council install a drinking water fountain beside the Skate Park in Newbridge to reduce single use plastics.
The Deputy Mayor of Kildare Councillor Robert Power will officially open the Skate Park at Moorefield Park, Newbridge, on Saturday at 10am.
The construction of the skateboard park, path and lighting upgrades were made possible by local councillors’ allocation of €130,000 of Local Property Tax (LPT) and €50,000 from development levies collected in the general area.
The Council added: "Kildare County has the highest rate of people aged 0-24 in the state according to the 2016 census. This has given rise to an increased demand for child and youth services and facilities.
"Skateboarding facilities are included in this need.
"The skateboard park in Newbridge was constructed under Kildare Play Policy 2018- 2028 which identified potential locations for the provision of play facilities.
"Under the plan there are a further 19 playgrounds proposed.
"In 2019 alone, 2 playgrounds are at advanced planning stages, another 2 are under construction and the skateboard park, associated paths and lighted were completed.
"Kildare County has three public skate parks in Athy, Naas and now Newbridge for parks users, the wider community and visitors alike to enjoy."
