An African grey parrot has been reunited with its owner after it was found on Dublin Airport’s main runway earlier this week.
It followed a social media appeal by the Dublin Airport Authority and supermarket Lidl with assistance from the Kildare Animal Foundation.
The parrot was found during a routine safety inspection on the runway last Sunday evening.
Its owner, Lubomir Michna, said he was "so happy" to get his pet Hugo back, and thanked staff at the airport.
Mr Michna said that Hugo escaped from his home in Finglas on Saturday after a door was left open.
Following a social media appeal, four people came forward claiming to be the parrot’s owner.
It was suggested to Mr Michna, who is originally from Slovakia, that he record an audio clip which could be played for the bird.
Dan Donoher of the Kildare Animal Foundation said it was clear from the recording that Mr Michna was Hugo’s owner.
"When the voice recording was sent to me and I played it for Hugo she reacted instantly and became animated and excited. There was no doubt in my mind that Lubomir was her rightful owner," he said.
Mr Michna said he plans to meet the staff at DAA who rescued Hugo and thank them in person.
