A development company that was given contracts by the government to deliver 190 new social housing units were €5 million in debt when awarded the contracts.

32 of those homes were promised for Kildare Town, but families who were expecting to move into their new houses are being left disappointed as the projects have been put on hold due to financial difficulties at the company.

According to today’s Sunday Independent, MDY Construction were €5 million in debt when they were awarded the contracts for Stated-funded homes in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.

There are now subcontractors who claim they haven’t been paid for their work so far, and building has completed halted on many of the sites. Residents were expecting to move into these new social housing units by early next year. The company has now been placed in examinership however, with some subcontractors claiming that they are owed anywhere between €140,000 and €500,000.

One such family who have expressed their worry in today’s Sunday Independent article is Kenny Delahunt and his mother Mary, who were expecting to move into a home in Dunmurray Rise, Bishopsland, Co Kildare. Kenny, who is a wheelchair user, was due to move in to a three-bed house with a one-bed flat attached at the beginning of next year but construction on the site has stopped.

JRS Scaffolding, who were the subcontractors hired to deliver the 32 homes there, have removed all its scaffolding in the last fortnight due to the financial problems at MDY Construction.
