Naas TidyTowns have received an award at this year's TidyTowns competition for their commitment to tackling the issue of gum litter on the streets of the town.
Naas was crowned the winner of the Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) Large Town and Urban Centre award category at the SuperValu National TidyTowns Competition. Each year, the GLT provides a total of €5,000 in prize money which is distributed amongst the winners of the Village and Small Town and Large Town and Urban Centre subcategories, with a €1,000 bonus going to the overall winner.
The GLT has sponsored a category award in the TidyTowns competition since 2007 as part of an ongoing awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the issue of littered gum amongst the public. The award serves as an acknowledgement of the consistent efforts of organisations working within their communities to reduce the levels of litter incorrectly disposed of on the streets of their respective localities.
This year’s competition saw Naas TidyTowns win the Large Town and Urban Centre award for their consistent efforts to tackle littered gum in the area, with Tubbercurry Tidytowns being crowned overall winners in addition to being named winners of the Village and Small Town award.
Nass Tidy Towns stood out to the judges for their collaborative and multi-pronged approach to tackling the issue of gum litter in their area, working with local schools and businesses to highlight the issue through initiatives such as ‘Adopt A Patch’ and using dry ice to remove gum from pavements.
Speaking about the awards Paul Kelly, Chairman of the GLT, said; ‘’The TidyTowns competition is a celebration of local efforts to come together and tackle the issue of litter the length and breadth of Ireland. I am delighted to see Naas TidyTowns pick up the Large Town and Urban Centre award amidst strong competition. Their efforts will hopefully spur on others to join in on the efforts being made to reduce litter in their local communities.”
The Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) awards are part of the wider GLT “Bin Your Gum When You’re Done” campaign with online, TV and poster advertising and a dedicated websitewww.gumlittertaskforce.ie.
