Rory McIlroy remains in a strong position to dispute the lead at the Irish Open after he carded a solid round of 70 brought him to within one shot of the overall lead.

On a morning where most of the field struggled to really string together birdies despite the good conditions, it was Scottish golfer Marc Warren who shot the lights out with a superb six under round of 66.

Overnight leader Danny Willett will be slightly disappointed that he couldn't capitalise on a mixed showing from McIlroy as he shot a round of 71 to move to -8, tied with Warren at the top of the leaderboard.

South African Jaco Van Zyl remains right in contention behind the leading three after he remained on the same score that he finished on last night, carding a level par round to stay at -4.

Naas man Jack Hume is yet to tee off for his second round, and he sits well back on +5, meaning he will need to shoot a low score this afternoon to ensure that he features tomorrow in the tournament.
