Wet roads may have caused this head-on crash

crash Lucan 2

A head-on collision between two cars in Clondalkin may have been caused by wet roads due to today's downpours.

The front areas of both vehicles were engulfed in flames after the sudden impact.

Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) said minor injuries were caused in the incident.

A DFB spokesman said: "Showery weather after a long dry spell can cause the roads to become greasy. Keep this in mind if your driving."

Man residing on Co Kildare border forced to source car insurance in Germany due to Ireland's high prices

A man living on the border of Co Kildare and Co Meath is convinced that if he had not sourced a car insurance policy in Germany, he would have been forced to leave Ireland.

Damien O'Kelly is living in Enfield and relies on his car for his job as a maintainer of fish tanks in Co Kildare and Meath.

Zurich Germany is providing fully comprehensive insurance for €730 annually while every other insurance company in Ireland were quoting him €1,590. He drives a 2-litre, 2006 Subaru Forester.

34- year-old Mr O'Kelly is behind the organisation of a national protest against insurance hikes, on July 2, at Merrion Square.

He said: "I would be looking at moving to Canada, if I had to pay  the full insurance that Ireland was quoting. This is a rip-off country."

Kildare mum of boy with autism welcomes new national registry

$

0

A Co Kildare mum of a boy with a form of autism has welcomed a new national Registry for children  living with the condition - but hopes it will make a difference.

The new initiative aims to identify the exact service needs for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by gathering vital information on a child’s diagnosis, development, medical and educational history.

Trinity College Dublin, NUI Galway and the Autism Speaks support group said the Registry will begin its work in the Kildare and West Wicklow area.

Kill nurse Hilary Creighton (43) said her eldest son Padraig (12) has Asperger Syndrome, also known as high functioning autism, and dyspraxia.

She and her husband David, an architect with Kildare County Council, have two other sons Tom (10) and seven-year-old Matthew.

Hilary said: "Padraig is in mainstream school with no SNA and full resource hours.

"He was only diagnosed four years ago because we were on a waiting list to be seen for two years and also because he's considered quite high functioning."

Hilary told the Irish Daily Mail: "He has a very high IQ, another reason why he fell under the radar for a long time.

"He was passing his maths tests with flying colours but there were huge issues socially.

"He wouldn't play, never made eye contact, and he'd make inappropriate noises in class. In Junior Infants nothing was said. We always thought he was very quiet, but he was our first child and we didn't have a clue. In Senior Infants a teacher pointed it out and in First Class it came up again, so we did something about it.

"When we were advised to get something done outside the school the waiting list was too long. We went privately for his dyspraxia diagnosis.

"Initially we went to a paediatrician in Tallaght, who suggested the multidisciplinary route. For two years Padraig was on the waiting list to be seen by CAMS, the child and adolescent mental health service. He was diagnosed and we were told there and then that there were no services available. It was very difficult leaving that meeting that day.

"At the time they couldn't even put him on a waiting list for occupational therapy because he wasn't in an ASD unit — units attached to primary schools specifically for autistic children. But obviously he needs OT for his dyspraxia and for the Aspergers as well. So we had to pay privately for OT. To get him fully assessed cost €500 and after that each session cost €65. We're forking out an awful lot of money that we shouldn't have to.

Hilary said she hopes the autism Register makes a difference.

She added: "Kildare is one of the areas where services are particularly poor. At one stage we were told he would have been put on an OT waiting list if he had been assessed in Dublin. But because he happened to live in Kildare, the services just weren't there. The system is broken."

  • Parents and guardians across Kildare/West Wicklow ar encouraged to support the project by registering their child on the Autism Registry.

To sign up, please email Sarah-Marie Feighan on feighans@tcd.ie or call (01) 8962315.

Kildare man (26) snatched woman's handbag from under bus seat

$

A Kildare Town resident, who began abusing alcohol when he was 14, was convicted of string of offences at Naas District Court.
Gary Delahunt (26) of Dunmurry View was before the court on charges such as breaching public order, theft and handling stolen goods.
Gardai said that in March 2013, Mr Delanhunt was on a bus on the Dublin Road in Kildare Town when he took a woman's handbag from under a seat.
The bag contained €300 in cash and an iPhone smartphone worth €500.
The owner noticed her bag was missing and with the assistance of another passenger apprehended Delahunt until gardai arrived.
In August 2015, Delahunt was seen swinging a golf club aggressively at Church View in Nurney.
He was intoxicated and was abusive to passersby and to Gardai-  and he even tried to strike one officer.
In another incident last February gardai saw Delahunt with a bicycle in Market Square in Kildare Town.
Delahunt was intoxicated and he claimed that he had borrowed the bike but gardai established that it was stolen.
Defence solicitor Seamus Boyle said that Delahunt had committed the offences while he was intoxicated or had taken drugs.
He added: "He accepts that he has a drug or alcohol addiction. He began taking alcohol when he was 14."
"For the past seven years, his partner, who is an intelligent young woman, has kept faith with him. She is a walking saint."
Mr Boyle said that Delahunt has been homeless for several years and squatted in unoccupied buildings around Kildare Town.
However he is living in a home now with his partner and two children.
The solicitor added: "It's not or never for him now to face up to these matters."
Judge John Cheatle ordered that a Probation Report be compiled on the defendant and adjourned the case to November.
He said that if Delahunt gets into trouble in the meantime gardai will have liberty to bring him to court and a prison sentence will be imposed.

AA expert: Penalty points work - but the system must be enforced

Motoring expert Conor Faughnan believes penalty points are working - but he accused judges of turning speeding cases into a lottery.

The AA's public affairs manager insisted that the system is successful as the number of annual fatalities has more than halved since penalty points were introduced in 2002.

However in 2014, of the 65,000 penalty point offences that came before the District Court - over 26,000 of them were struck out.

Faughnan said: "There is no doubt in my mind that for a lot of drivers the first instinct when they receive a penalty points notice in the post is to contact a lawyer.

"They are not asking or even thinking about whether or not they were actually guilty of the offence; they are thinking only about how to avoid getting points.

"We hear stories of drivers who turn up to plead all sorts of excuses with varying and apparently random degrees of success. If the number of penalty points notices that got lost in the post is actually true then an post has a lot to answer for."

In a blog on theaa.ie, Faughnan added: "Will you be lucky or will you not? It can be very arbitrary, the mood of the judge on the day has a big effect. Is he grumpy this morning, is she handing out fines, left right and centre?

"There are counties where you get to pay a few bob into the poor box and counties where that is never an option.

"It all feels there is an element of the dog ate my homework.

"That is a huge amount of wasted effort and cost in the systems – enough to pay for a lot of extra Gardaí for example."
