An additional three Gardaí will be appointed to Celbridge during this year.

North Kildare TD, Frank O'Rourke said: “Over the last number of years, I have had regular meetings with an Garda Siochana, raised the matter in the Dáil and met with the Minister for Justice, to highlight the importance of providing extra resources for Celbridge and the Kildare division.”

He said:“I met with Minister Charlie Flanghan T.D, this week on this important issue. I also met the Chief Superintendent and the Superintendent in recent days who has responsible for the North Kildare area. It has now been confirmed to me that Celbridge will get an additional three Gardaí. This is very positive news and we are making progress.”

Deputy O'Rourke said:“Kildare has one of the lowest level of Garda numbers per head of population in the country. We are making progress. Earlier this year, we secured a Community Garda for Celbridge and more Gardai for Maynooth and Kilcock. However more resources are required. “

He said:“Maynooth, Kilcock, Clane all need extra Gardaí and I will keep making representations to the Minister and Garda Management until we get a fair distribution of Garda resources.Together with Cllr Michael Coleman, and other public representatives, we work to make further progress.”The university town of Maynooth has a population of 15,000 and over 12,000 students but no full-time Garda station, and we have similar under resource situations in Kilcock, Celbridge and Clane with no full time Garda stations.”

A family is appealing for information following the theft of a quad from Newbridge on Tuesday last.

The vehicle was taken between 2.57 and 3.07 from a field off the R445 road between Naas and Newbridge, opposite Willowbrook Nursing Home.

Thieves were caught on CCTV loading the quad onto a white/silver Hilux Crewcab-type of vehicle.

The CCTV cannot pick up the number plate unfortunately.

Cars and lorries drove by on both sides of the busy road and occupants may have witnessed what happened.

The Honda 500cc - TRX 500CC has a slight crack on its rear light.

Features include black wheels with Pocket on left.

The winch on the front somehow broke when the thieves used it to get the quad through a deep ditch.

Larries strike late to snatch victory against Clane in Minor Football League Final

St.Laurences 0-11

Clane 1-6

Minor Football League Division 1 Final

Injury time points from Alex Mackey and Kevin Eustace were enough to give St.Laurences victory over Clane in a tightly fought Division 1 Minor Football League Final.

The game was a repeat of the 2018 Under 17 Final and like that day St.Laurences found a way to win even if it took till stoppage time to confirm it.

A controversial first half goal looked to have set Clane up for victory but they failed to score in the second half and against a talented St.Laurences side that was never going to be enough with the loss of Sam Reilly who was unavailable proving crucial.

Felix Lawler was lethal on the frees for St.Laurences and the six points from the captain played no small part in the winners making up for an earlier defeat to Clane.

In a tight and tactical Minor League Final it was St.Laurences under the tutelage of former Kildare star Padraig O’Neill who opened the scoring with a Felix Lawler free.

Clane who were unbeaten during the Regulation League replied with a Mark Kelly score from distance but the Larries maintained their early advantage with another Lawler free.

Clane then began to take control and they were level at 0-2 apiece with a Cian Shanahan point before they took the lead for the first time courtesy of a Mark Kelly free.

John Lynch also had a chance for goal during this period but despite the centre back storming upfield his effort was well saved wide by Daniel Glancy with Kelly converting the subsequent 45.

Larries then had a goal chance of their own but after Kevin Eustace found space and released Lawler the forward was out of luck as a Clane defender came in to avert the danger.

Lawler and Kelly duly shared frees but a fine effort from distance by PJ Cullen brought Larries back to within a point.

The main incident of the game arrived in the 29th minute when a Mark Kelly 45 looked to be dropping short and it skimmed off the fingers of Kevin Eustace towards the goal and it was debatable whether it crossed the line with both umpires putting across their point of view but eventually referee Frank Delaney intervened and a goal was awarded to give Clane a four point buffer.

Inside forward Dean O’Shea followed up that goal with a point on the turn and Clane went into the break with a 1-6 to 0-4 lead.

Clane had the aid of a stiff enough breeze blowing into the Town end of St.Conleths Park during the opening half and with the elements at their back St.Laurences kicked the opening two points of the second half with Lawler and Kevin Eustace on target.

Aaron Kennedy was pretty quiet up to that point but he soon burst into the game when broke onto a pass and shot for goal but his attempt deflected wide off Sam Hilliard and the Laurences star can count himself somewhat fortunate to have stayed on the field as he seemed to come into contact via the foot with Hilliard after the shot took place and Hilliard had to go off with a suspected concussion.

Laurences were much the better side though and a Lawler free brought the deficit back to just two points entering the final quarter.

Clane had chances to seal it but Aaron Connolly, Dean O’Shea and Eoin Twohig all wasted a couple of opportunities to give them a bit of breathing space.

Even still Clane had that two point lead until Harry Kirwan converted a 45 three minutes from the end and from there it was a huge Laurences onslaught.

A Lawler free two minutes into injury time looked to have sealed extra-time but the Narraghmore based outfit were having none of that and Kevin Eustace and Alex Mackey kicked points in the dying stages as St.Laurences took home the League title.

St.Laurences: Daniel Glancy; Robbie Allen, Ciaran Sullivan, Dean Warren, Michael Cassidy, Luke Gorman, Conor Perse, PJ Cullen 0-1, Kevin Eustace 0-2, Harry Kirwan 0-1 (0-1 45), Aaron Kennedy, Callum McElhinney, Alex Mackey 0-1, Felix Lawler 0-6 (0-6fs), Adam Griffith. Subs: Stephen Kavanagh for Cassidy 38 mins, Colm McMahon for Allen 48 mins, Rory Clarke for Griffith 58 mins, Padraig Doolin for Warren 62 mins.

Clane: Cian Burke; Donal Donovan, Sean Connolly, Sam Hilliard, Cian Shanahan 0-1, John Lynch, Evan Kelly, Rob Davitt, Danny Vaughan 0-1, Eoin Twohig, Aaron Connolly, Mark Kelly 0-2 (0-2fs), Dean O’Shea 0-2 (0-1f) Adam Fanning, Cormac Vizzard. Subs: Oisin Tighe for Vizzard 17 mins, Ger Darcy for Hilliard 45 mins, Harry O’Neill for E.Kelly 50 mins, Kyle Grehan for Fanning 55 mins, Mark Gorman for Davitt 60 mins.

Ref; Frank Delaney

Kildare dad-of-one gets suspended sentence for crashing car into gates of British Embassy

A Kildare father-of-one has received a suspended sentence for crashing his car into the gates of the British Embassy while off his medication.

Eric Hogan (33) with an address at Harbour View, Canal Side, Athy, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to criminal damage at the British Embassy, Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin, on June 9, 2018.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at the same place. He also pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine at Donnybrook Garda Station, Donnybrook, Dublin 4, all on the same date.

The court heard that samples taken from Hogan at Cloverhill Prison later tested negative for drugs or alcohol.

The embassy's outer gates were knocked off their rails by the collision and the total cost of repairing the gates was €33,500 plus VAT.

Judge Pauline Codd said this was a “highly reckless” act and that members of the public could have been injured.

She set a headline sentence of six years, but took into account Hogan's guilty plea and his low risk of re-offending if he complies with his psychiatric medication. The judge also acknowledged that Hogan is sole carer for his child.

Judge Codd imposed a four-year sentence which she suspended in full on strict conditions, including that Hogan show the Probation Service that he is taking his medication. She also banned him from driving for two years.

Earlier, Garda Declan Dunne told Barry Ward BL, prosecuting, that on the night in question he was on duty outside the embassy when he saw a grey Peugeot car drive in front of and collide with the outer gates.

Gda Dunne said that Hogan was shouting when he drove into the gates “but not making sense”. He saw him exit the car and thought he was intoxicated due to slurring his speech.

Gda Dunne agreed with Pieter Le Vert BL, defending, that Hogan took umbrage at the suggestion that he had been drinking.

He told gardaí that he never drinks and drives due to his uncle having been killed by a drink driver when he was aged 22.

Mr Le Vert said his client was “off his medication” at the time of the incident and that he was grappling with psychiatric issues. He said Hogan did not know where he was when he was remanded in custody and thought he was in an asylum.

He said his client had a “spotty memory” of the crash and was mortified by his actions. Hogan has five previous convictions for public order offences.

Increase in Co Kildare businesses implementing formal Brexit plans

$
0
0

In Kildare, there has been an encouraging response from businesses in the last quarter in response to the threat of a no-deal Brexit.

The number of businesses across different sectors that are actively preparing for the threat that Brexit poses is continues to increase.

Richard Dunne, AIB Brexit advisor for Kildare, Laois and Offaly commented: “We continue to keep in close consultation with our most heavily impacted Brexit customers particularly in the manufacturing and food sectors in the region. They are continuing to implement strategies such as stockpiling in the UK, diversifying to alternative markets and utilising shipping options as opposed to using the UK as a land bridge which are prudent methods of offsetting risk.”

“In the logistics and transport sector in particular we have been working with businesses to provide additional working capital facilities in advance of a potential no deal Brexit. Brexit planning has come into sharp focus for this sector as cross border trade means customer based in the UK & NI are now actively looking for evidence of the appropriate licenses and certification to carry on transport activities in the UK in a no deal situation, documents which were not previously required.”

“Importantly, we are seeing an uplift in the number of businesses coming to us to assess the potential of indirect exposures that they may not have previously contemplated. For example, in the retail sector, customers are carrying out due diligence to establish the supply chain of their wholesalers to ensure there will be no delay on importing products in the event of a no deal Brexit. It is important that all businesses carry out a Brexit review to establish if they need to come and talk to AIB about putting facilities in place, whether it is to hedge against currency exposure, working capital facilities or the SBCI Brexit loan facility. We would like to reiterate that we are open to discussing all potential options with our Brexit impacted customers, to review their requirements and help them navigate this uncertain period.”

The AIB Brexit Sentiment Index for Q1 2019 reveals that two thirds (64%) of SMEs in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) have begun formally planning for or investigating the implications of Brexit – up sixteen percent on the last survey.  56% of SMEs in Northern Ireland (NI) have yet to start their Brexit planning or inquiries.  Concerns over Brexit continue to impact investment plans, with 53% of ROI SMEs and 66% of NI SMEs that planned to invest in their business now reviewing, postponing or cancelling their plans.

The Brexit Sentiment Index baseline is zero, with a potential range from +100 to -100. For Q1 2019, the Index registered a score of -52 in the ROI, from -41 in Q4 2018, and -31 in Q1 2018.

Sentiment in Northern Ireland fell to –38 for Q1 2019 from -31 in Q4 2018. The rise in negativity in ROI is driven by the feeling among SMEs that Brexit is starting to impact business now (46% of them agree compared to 25% in September 2018), with a rising number concerned about the impact Brexit could have on their business in the future (76%).

In the Republic of Ireland the index is at its lowest point for most sectors, with the food & drink sector the most negative, registering a new low (-56), closely followed by the tourism (-55) and retail (-53) sectors.  The percentage of businesses reporting a negative impact on sales in the ROI is now 23%, double the level measured in September 2017 (12%).

AIB’s Brexit Sentiment Index conducted by Ipsos MRBI is a quarterly survey of more than 700 SMEs in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland that assesses the attitudes of SME business leaders on Brexit and the impact on their businesses.

Kildare boxer Hogan loses world title fight in Mexico in controversial decision

Kilcullen boxer Dennis Hogan suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Jaime Munguia in a controversial WBO Super Welterweight title fight in Monterrey.

Hogan looked to be connecting with the more punches and showed great work to frustrate his opponent, rarely getting caught, with Munguia admitting it was a difficult night.

But the judges saw it differently and awarded the home boxer the win on a majority decision, 115-113, 116-112 and 114-114.

Hogan said: "I knew I won the fight. I knew in my heart and soul. [I’m] so disappointed to train as hard as I did and for this to happen.

"We came here in good faith and it's no disrespect to anybody here, but apart from the people who scored it and allowed this decision to go through, everybody knows.

"This is bad for boxing, bad for me."

Munguia said in response: "I clearly won the fight."

But he then offered a rematch which said more than his previous words.

"I was always attacking and connected with the harder shots, but if he wants the rematch, we’ll give it to him and even in Australia."

Kildare Gardai have thanked motorists who heeded the warnings to pass smoothly and safely around temporary M7 works to lift bridge beams into place since Friday night.

Naas District Court heard how a man turned his head in an 'intimidating manner' while an eleven year-old child was in the car.

Garda evidence outlined how on February 7, 2017, at Newbridge, a man was driving past his neighbour who also had her child in the car, when allegations were made that the accused 'turned his head in an intimidating manner.'

The court heard how the accused had one previous conviction in 2011.

Defence Solicitor, Timmy Kennelly, said: "He has ongoing issues."

Judge Desmond Zaidan  ordered that the accused pay a €350 fine.

Free legal aid was offered.
