23% VAT hike on vitamins & supplements is being welcomed

CarePlus Pharmacy,  has welcomed the announcement that the Revenue Commissioners has deferred the introduction of a 23% VAT rate on vitamins and supplement products.

Pharmacists were concerned that a significant price increase would impact all customers who use vitamins and minerals to supplement their health needs.

There are some groups of the population who rely heavily on supplements such as pregnant women, babies, elderly and those whose immune and digestive systems have been compromised.

Commercial Director of CarePlus Pharmacy, Niamh Lynch said: “At CarePlus, many of our customers purchase vitamins on the recommendation from their GP's and healthcare providers. For some consumers, the price escalation might be a barrier to maintaining good health and self-care. Efforts should be made to relieve an overburdened health system and not tax efforts to remain healthy. CarePlus will engage fully with any public consultation on behalf of our customers.”

Dublin punter puts tiny bet to win whopping amount

A Dublin punter is popping the champagne after a tiny bet overcame mammoth odds thanks to an unlikely run of Lotto numbers.

The anonymous customer invested just €0.50 in their local BoyleSports shop on five numbers for the Daily Millions draw on Tuesday afternoon, opting for a sequence of 3, 7, 8, 9 and 10 all to come out of the drum.

Incredibly by the time the bonus ball was about to roll out, all numbers had landed except 8, but that was soon put right as the final ball kindly obliged and triggered the massive payout.

The bet had beaten colossal odds of 15,000/1 and the lucky punter was able to swap their betslip for a grand total of €7,500.50.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Our Dublin customer was aiming high with a tiny stake and we can only say fair play to them for taking on odds of 15,000/1. Their ambitious approach paid off handsomely and we hope they enjoy splashing out with their well-deserved winnings.”

Worrying night of gorse fires in Hollywood on Kildare border

$

Overnight gorse fires in the mountains around Hollywood on the Kildare border created a spectacular and highly unusual sight in February.

Kildare Fire Service worked alongside Wicklow Fire Service for several hours.

Raging blazes could be seen from Daly's Emo filling station on the N81 at Hollywood.

In the photos by Catherine Curley, the flames appear to be only hundreds of metres away.

The dry weather over recent days and the unseasonable warmth for the past four days has created tinderbox conditions in dense undergrowth.

Gorse fires are usually only a feature of drought-like conditions in summer months.

Catherine said: "Hollywood Village is out of control only just heard the brigades passing by now. Wishing them a safe night."

Wicklow Fire Service initially claimed that houses were under threat from the fires but the blazes were later brought under control.

Six fire crews were dealing with the fires at one point.

Wicklow Fire Service said:  "We had crews from 6 Fire Stations fighting gorse fires from the Dublin border to Hollywood where houses were under threat.

"Many thanks to Dublin Fire Brigade and Kildare Fire Service.

"Best advice in Smokey conditions is to stay indoors.’

"No injuries were reported."

$

It will be another dry and unseasonably mild February day with just light southeast breezes and temperatures as high as 16C for Co Kildare.

After early mist clears, good sunshine will develop widely, though low cloud may linger near the coast. Highest temperatures 13 to 16 degrees Celsius, best values inland.

Dry and calm tonight. Rather cool with lowest temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. Turning misty, with a little damp weather developing locally later in the night.

Thursday will bring a lot of dry weather generally, however it will be dull and locally damp to begin with some showery rain. Whilst it will slowly brighten-up, the odd heavy shower will appear across Leinster later. Still relatively mild, with highest temperatures ranging 11 to 14 degrees Celsius, in just light westerly breezes.

Friday: A cool start with any frost or local fog clearing. Staying dry across much of the eastern half of the country until evening, but gradually clouding over. Duller elsewhere with outbreaks of rain moving in off the Atlantic, turning persistent and extending eastwards before nightfall. Some heavy bursts are possible.

Afternoon highs will range 10 to 13 degrees Celsius, in mostly moderate southerly breezes, fresher though along the south coast. Rain will clear into the Irish Sea early in the night, but with further rain moving in off the Atlantic later. Frost free though, with fresh westerlies, and overnight lows of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius.

Health scare for brave Carlow cancer survivor Shan Tynan (20) as she undergoes tests in Houston hospital

$
0
0

The family of brave Carlow native and cancer survivor Shan Tynan has said that she is undergoing tests this week after doctors in Houston raised concerns over  her health due to 'ongoing issues'.

After being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Histiocytosis X in 2015, 20-year-old Shan moved with her family from their home in Carlow to Houston, Texas so she could receive specialist treatment and several months ago she was declared cancer free.

Her mother Leona is originally from Newbridge and Kildare locals rallied to help the family raise €700,000 for Shan’s pioneering medical treatment in the US last year.

Last October Shan proudly rang the ceremonial bell at the Texas Children’s Hospital declaring that she was at last cancer free and she described it as ‘an amazing moment’ following a difficult battle with the illness.

However, according to the Team Shan Tynan page, on Friday one of Shan’s doctors Dr Mc Clain became concerned over her health in recent days and she was sent for further bloodwork, x-rays and scans.

"Unfortunately something has shown up on Shan’s lungs that wasn’t there at her last scans, it is some type of lung disease but until the pulmonologist goes through all her imaging and symptoms and speaks to us we don’t know what exactly we are dealing with. We are very thankful that it isn’t Histio or any type of cancer which was obviously our biggest fear. Following this scan we also needed to see Shan’s GI doctor and given her symptoms there are concerns about what is going on in her stomach and colon area," said a statement on the page.

It is understood that Shan underwent surgery on Tuesday February 26 to investigate her symptoms further and she may also have to get a brain MRI and a gastric empty test on Friday.

Brave Shan undergoing tests in hospital this week

The family were due to return home to Carlow this week but they are now saying that they hope to travel next week when Shan’s condition improves. They said that while they don't have all the answers yet Shan is in the care of the dedicated team at Texas Children's Hospital and that they are 'doing everything possible to make sure we go home with a clear picture of what is going on and how we can move forward.'

"It’s not what we expected but it’s nowhere close to what we have had to deal with in the past. Unfortunately we won’t be home as planned this week but our hope is that we will be good to travel next week and Shan's doctors in St. Vincent’s will continue with whatever plan is put in place and Dr. Mc. Clain will continue to guide them in caring for Shan. Thank you all for your messages and support and please keep Shan and our family in your thoughts over the coming days," said the family.

Parents warned that 'Momo Challenge' is being shared via social media and game apps

$

Co Kildare parents are this week being reminded to supervise their children’s online activity due to a cyber-bullying game called the "Momo challenge" which has started to appear on social media in Ireland in recent days.

The challenge has been seen on Whatsapp, Youtube, Facebook and Twitter as well as on the popular game Minecraft.

Gardaí say that the challenge is appearing on social media platforms and targets children and/or vulnerable people.

It is understood that "Momo", a creepy female character with straggly black hair and protruding eyes, makes contact through social media and apps and allegedly asks the person to perform dangerous tasks, including self-harm. The so-called challenge has been reported in many European countries including the United Kingdom, France and Germay in recent months.

In Northern Ireland the PSNI has also issued a warning against "Momo", and says there have been reports of the game appearing on YouTube.

"Our advice as always, is to supervise the games your kids play and be extremely mindful of the videos they are watching on YouTube. Ensure that the devices they have access to are restricted to age suitable content," said the PSNI.

A garda spokesperson said that it was aware of reports the so-called Momo challenge is circulating in Ireland and has urged parents to take an active role in monitoring what their children are doing and supervising them whilst on technological devices such as phones and tablets.

CyberSafeIreland said it had been contacted a number of times in the last few days about the Momo challenge.

"We have not seen evidence of cases where this has caused harm to Irish children," said spokesperson Alex Cooney.

She said: "Clearly, however, there is some scary content relating to it, including YouTube videos that would be accessible to many young children. Parents should make informed decisions about their children's online use, keep a close eye on things, and have regular conversations about what their children are seeing and doing online."

Meanwhile, The Children's Digital Protection Bill 2018 is currently going through its third stage in the Dail and it is hoped it will help to safe guard vulnerable young people whilst also holding social media platforms responsible for the spread of harmful content.
