Love/Hate actor Johnny Ward thanks his fans for their 'continuous support' as he glides through ‘Switch Up Week’ on Dancing With the Stars

The remaining celebrities on Dancing With The Stars felt the heat last night as the dance competition quite literally switched things up by assigning the celebs to new professional dance partners on Sunday night.

It was an interesting week for Fair City and Love/Hate star Johnny Ward, originally from Walkinstown in Dublin, a former alumna of Maureen V Ward Talent Agency and former acting teacher in Kill as he was paired with professional dancer Ksenia Zsikhotska, giving a lively performance with a quickstep to ‘Are You Going to Be My Girl’ by Jet.

Taking to the floor last night, Johnny looked the part in a sequined jacket and gave a lively performance with new professional dance partner Ksenia, earning a good score of 19 points from the judges.

Judge Julian Benson praised the duo for the performance, saying:“ That was a rock n'roll quickstep, I have to commend you. You deal with the steps so well, I thought you had a lovely frame. You have a massive potential and you could be a star performer.” Meanwhile, judges Brian Redmond and Lorraine Barry also praised the lively performance.

However, after the show ended, some fans expressed their beliefs that the actor has been unfairly ‘undermarked’ by the judges since the series began. Taking to social media after the live shows, Johnny thanked his fans for their ‘continuous support’ and admitted that while he was a little down about his score that he had a ‘great week’ working with Ksenia Zsikhotska and next week he will be reunited with dance partner Emily Barker.

The top position on the leader board was claimed by Cliona Hagan and dance partner Vitali Kozmin, who scored a staggering 28 points for their salsa to Taki Taki by DJ Snake (feat. Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B).

Judge Julian Benson said:"That was super sexy, man-eating samba girl!" Fellow judge Brian Redmond reckoned "that was a great job all the way though," but Loraine Barry was the judge who described the dance most succinctly, stating: "O! M! G!".

With a total of 28 points - including the first ten this season, from Julian - Cliona and Vitali were the judges' favourites on the night. Meanwhile, Mairéad Ronan and Kai Widdrington finished two points behind, while Demi Isaaac Oviawe and Robert Rowinski finished last with just 13 points.

Johnny and Emily need as much support as possible to continue their journey on the show and Kildare viewers can help by voting for them when they next appear on the show "Dancing With the Stars" this coming Sunday February17 at 6.30pm one RTE One.

Kildare native competes in ice swimming extreme sport

$

Ice Swimming is an extreme sport, a dangerous sport, but one Irish woman, Claire Ryan, is throwing caution to the wind and leading the field having completed an unprecedented six Ice Miles, four of which qualifying as Extreme Ice Miles.

The former Kildare school girl who attended Cadamstown National School, recently adding to her tally in water with a bone chilling temperature of 2.5°c, during the 7th Eastern Bay Invitational International Ice Mile Event held at Clontarf Baths in North Dublin on Saturday 2nd February.

She was among 13 athletes who attempted to swim an Ice Mile at the international event which featured swimmers from UK, Ireland & USA and was the only woman to successfully complete the arduous task.

Ice Swimming is a relatively new sport with the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) being formed as recently as 2009. The Ice Mile is the IISA’s ultimate achievement where each swimmer has to complete an endurance swim over a distance of one mile in very cold water with a temperature of 5°c or less. The swim must be unassisted with the swimmer wearing only a standard swimming costume, pair of goggles and swim cap.

6-time Ice Miler Claire Ryan has the additional distinction of being the only woman to have swam an Ice Mile in the Irish Sea, she completed this feat on International Women’s Day 8th March 2018.  It is hard to imagine or understand what drives these athletes to take on such extreme challenges and how they can cope with being immersed in near freezing temperatures over relatively long periods of time, so why does Claire do it? “Yes I suppose it sounds a little mad doesn’t it?” Claire laughs “Your whole body is screaming “get me out of here” whenever you get into water that cold, but that is part of the challenge for me, overcoming that fear and the pain that your body is going through, it’s difficult to describe – your body and mind are in turmoil yet you have to keep your focus and stay in control, its one of the most difficult challenges i have taken on, you can hardly walk when you get out of the water and we couldn’t do it without the help of the support and  medical volunteers.”

Claire, is unusual among Ice Swimming athletes in that she chooses to swim the ice mile using a breaststroke rather than the faster and more energetic crawl-stroke that the vast majority of ice swimmers use, this means she can spend up to 50% longer in the icy cold water compared to a crawl-stroke swimmer greatly increasing the difficulty and risk, this has lead to four of her endurance swims meeting the qualifying standard of “Extreme Ice Mile” having spent in excess of 45 minutes in the water, her coldest and longest swim having taken place at the Wild Water Swimming Facility in Armagh in January 2017 spending over 49 minutes in nearly freezing water at 2.03°c. -  An ice mile is given the higher risk classification of “Extreme Ice Mile” if one of the following factors occurs: the water has a temperature of 2°c or less, the swim takes over 45 minutes to complete, there is -15°c wind chill or the swim takes place at a high altitude of 2440m or above.

Ireland is at the forefront of this fledgling sport, second out of 35 countries in the number of IISA ratified Ice Mile Swims completed and well ahead of the rest of the field, as well as the Ice Mile, there are Ice Kilometres and distances as short as 50m at competitive national and international events, the next IISA World Championships are taking place from 14th -18th  March in Murmansk, Russia with a strong Irish team taking part.

This exciting new sport is growing in popularity all the time drawing new members from the swimming and Triathlete communites, if you are interested in finding out more about the sport there is an Irish wing of the association IISA-Ireland website: www.iisaireland.ie

The event – Claire Ryan took part in The 7th Eastern Bay Invitational International Ice Mile Event took place on Saturday 2nd February, due to bad weather the venue was changed from Lough Dan, Wicklow Mountains to The Clontarf Baths Open Swimming Facility in Clontarf Dublin, according to organiser Fergal Somerville the Eastern Bay Invitational is the world’s largest and longest running Ice Mile Event

Cllr Morgan McCabe has requested that the Council install further speed restrictions or Danger / Warning signage near the location of what he described as a 'major 'near miss' in Athgarvan.

The incident happened at a bend near Mountain View on the Curragh Road on the evening of January 31.

The politician will raise the issue at the next local municipal district meeting.

Councillor Mark Lynch will also call for a design plan for the introduction of a playground in Athgarvan as per the County Development Plan.

Cllr Lynch also requested a timetable to be provided for the Village Renewal Plan for Athgarvan including
when physical works will begin and can a cost be given for the installation of quality, raised brick crossings for pedestrians that can also slow down traffic.

He also called for the possible removal of traffic lights to be replaced with a mini roundabout.

Councillor Suzanne Doyle will use the meeting to call on the Council to introduce a 4-way Stop Sign as an interim measure to improve safety at the Brownstown junction until such time as the Council are in a position to
"deliver radical realignment and/or traffic lights at this junction."

Kildare Co Council has refused planning permission for a 3-bed log cabin bungalow in the Prosperous area.

The applicant had sought temporary permission for a period of three years for the proposed structure.

The log cabin was being planned as a stand alone house until other construction with planning permission could begin.

Just over a year ago, planners gave the green light at the same location for a side extension and dormer extension to a bungalow.

Kildare's next star? Naas singer releases fantastic cover of classic song 'Grace' racking up thousands of views

By Kim O'Leary

A lot of fantastic musical talent is coming out of Co Kildare lately and talented singer/guitarist Dan McCabe from Naas is pulling in thousands of views for his cover of 'Grace' which tells the tragic love story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford.

Dan McCabe (22) is from Naas and he is a singer and guitarist, having developed a passion for music from a young age.

He told KildareNow recently: "I started gigging professionally about three years ago and since then I’ve played in venues in TempleBar, London, Santa Ponca and all over Ireland. Music is a passion for myself and recording music is also another thing I put a lot of interest into. I only recently started posting videos to social media, 1 month ago to be precise and it’s been a great experience to share my music with thousands and to get such lovely responses too is also very nice and I’m extremely grateful."

Last week, Dan decided to do his own cover of the well-known Irish ballad 'Grace' which tells the doomed love story of Irish poet and republican Joseph Plunkett who was one of the planners of the 1916 Easter Rising and his love for Grace Gifford.

Joseph Plunkett was present at the GPO during the Easter Rising with other leaders including Michael Collins and Patrick Pearse, and he was eventually executed in Kilmainham Gaol, with 'Grace' capturing the heart breaking final moments between Plunkett and Grace before Plunkett's death.

Dan's heartfelt cover of the ballad has almost 40,000 views since he posted his cover on social media at the weekend and he has said that he is delighted by the largely positive reactions, and he also got plenty of views in January for his stirring cover of 'Shallow' from the hit movie 'A Star is Born.'

Next up for Dan will be a few more local gigs around Kildare and plenty of more exciting things ahead for 2019 so watch this space!

Dan is active on social media and has his own website dmc-music.webnode.com and Facebook

GAA: The colour of the jersey has changed but Cormac O'Doherty's focus still remains

After four winters preparing to take on the cream of Ireland's clubs, Cormac O'Doherty is now firmly focused on Derry's hurling fortunes.  He sat down with Michael McMullan ahead of this weekend's trip to Newbridge...

It’s a different winter for Cormac O’Doherty.  The hurl is still in hand, but the colour of the jersey has changed.

It’s a blustery Sunday and the Oakleafers’ attacking ace is seated in Owenbeg’s canteen.

Derry hurlers have just completed an in house game ahead of this weekend’s top of the table battle with Kildare.

For the last four winters, his colour was maroon.  Preparing himself for the defences of Na Piarsaigh and Nemo Rangers, of St Vincent’s and Cuala.

Seated at a table behind him are Gerald Bradley and Sean Cassidy.  Like the rest of the Derry hurling squad, they are refreshing their phones for updates on the county’s football fortunes in Waterford.

It’s getting tense.  An unthinkable upset is on the cards.

Karl McKaigue’s point gets a reaction.  But not as much as the news of Paul McNeill’s 68th minute goal.  Just when it was needed to seal two more points in Derry’s rescue mission.

All players who O’Doherty battled in the trenches with under the watch of Mickey Moran and Michael McShane.

After four years, the colour is now red.

A first chance to spend the off-season on the county scene.

The previous day Cushendall were cruelly knocked out of the All-Ireland series and this weekend Gaoth Dobhair are carrying Ulster’s hopes on the football front.

After a drubbing by Ballycran in Ulster, Cormac O’Doherty and his Slaughtneil squad mates took a well-deserved break.

“The last three or four years, it has been a constant 12 month season for us.” O’Doherty began.

“It has been different (the previous Christmas) and it could be a nice change.  I know a few boys enjoyed the rest and they were keen to get back into the pre-season, to get back out on the grass again.”

While the players took time away from the game, Derry were finding a replacement for outgoing manager Collie McGurk, who annexed two titles during his two-year tenure.

O’Doherty played on both teams.  He was full-forward as the U21s beat Down and came off the bench against Armagh in Croke Park as Derry clinched a second Nicky Rackard Cup.

Last season it was the Slaughtneil man’s late free, that dumped Down out, on score difference, in the Christy Ring Cup at Glen, before they were knocked out by this weekend’s opponent’s Kildare, on their way to the title.

In the first two games this season, O’Doherty has scored 0-10 and 0-8 against Down and Donegal, but like Sean Cassidy alluded to after beat the Tir Chonaill men, the squad has been the big factor.

Derry will travel south this weekend with a panel of ‘around 35’ John McEvoy pointed out.  There is an extended group of ‘around 40’.

“That was one of Collie’s (McGurk) big things,” Cormac commented.  “Getting your best players out and work from there.

“John has come in with the same mantra and so far everybody has bought into what they are trying to do.  It is a brilliant setup so far.

“Everybody is here for the betterment of Derry hurling and you can see that the capability is there when everybody puts the work in.

“John (McEvoy), Brian (Delargy) and Johnny (McGuirk) really emphasise that we had a good squad there at the minute.”

The level of detail is there in the Derry setup.

Former Derry goalkeeper Eoin McNicholl has joined up to oversee the strength and conditioning.  The Glenullin man, a Hogan Cup and All-Ireland minor winner, has worked with the Northern Ireland netball team.

When Dunloy won the U21 and senior hurling double in 2017, McNicholl was the man responsible for their training load.

During the recent win over Donegal, McNicholl was putting the player who didn’t see any action through a session during and after the game.

John McEvoy’s policy is about workload.  Giving until there is nothing left to give.  Cian Waldron, John Mullan, Sé and Mark McGuigan all scored when they came off the bench.

In the Down game, Mullan and Cian’s brother Naoise played a vital role when introduced.

The benefits of playing hurling at training.

“We are getting 30 men at training and getting a good game like today, it definitely helps,” O’Doherty states.

“Especially, as John has alluded to, when we are probably six to eight weeks behind other teams.”

Kildare will pose their toughest examination to date.

O’Doherty feels there is more to come.   The first game against Down, they were ‘rusty’ and against Donegal he wasn’t happy with his own performance.

“Both individually and collectively we weren’t up to scratch.  It is a game against our rival; Derry and Down games are never won that easy as we have seen over the last couple of years.

“I was poor against Donegal, thankfully it didn’t come down to it,” he said.

As a freetaker, O’Doherty handed the plaudits to the rest of the team.

“A lot of boys put in a lot of work, a lot of time the free-takers get a lot of credit.  The boys had come in four or five weeks before that, the work has been good. It is always good to start the new season with a victory and get the bit of momentum and build from there.”

After winning the Nicky Rackard Cup, would the Christy Ring Cup be a target?

Maybe.

If so, it will be for another day.

O’Doherty is only concentrating on the now.  Like his manager, the word competitive figures prominently in the vocabulary.

“I think the big thing for us, with the management only in place up about six weeks, they are getting to know everybody that they have.

“We are using the league to find our best team.  We have been very competitive so far, with two (wins) from two.

“You want to win every game, there are a lot of competitors in the squad.  Everyone on the changing room is fighting for a jersey and fighting for wins.

“Momentum is a big thing in sport and the more wins we can get in the league the better chance we have.”

Derry’s team are benefitting from having a strong base.

A glance around the room at Owenbeg and the recent Slaughtneil and Kevin Lynch’s successful minor teams are dotted around every table.  The recent U21 teams are well represented.

O’Doherty’s hurling career began to Slaughtneil’s Féile team, well before this time.

At the just nine year of age, the late Thomas Cassidy handed him the goalkeeper jersey, before eventually graduating to the fulcrum.

His brother Oisin was between the posts when the Emmet’s won back to back Ulster senior titles.

Banagher duo Kieran Stevenson and Daryll McDermott were long term number ones.

This year, there is a new face with Kevin Lynch’s Sean Kelly stepping into the breach.

“He is very cool and he has experience beyond his years,” O’Doherty endorses of his young team mate.

“You might say he is inexperienced, but he has done a lot more hurling than a lot of boys.  It is showing at the minute.

“It is a big help when you know you have someone so composed and calm in there.  It gives that bit of confidence to your defence and the whole team.

“There is no point in scoring a lot, if you are going to concede a lot and your ‘keeper has to be a good player and Sean has proved that.”

As well as the current squad, there is more to follow.  Last season, Kevin Kelly, Martin Birt and Ryan O’Neill helped secure the U17 Celtic Challenge title.

“The hurling ability is there in Derry,” O’Doherty points out.  “It’s getting to the stage where everybody is willing to buy into it – especially at senior level when the commitment is so high.”

In the short term, it is about Kildare and a trip to Newbridge.  With both teams having won their first two games, something has to give.

“Every win is important for different reasons,” Cormac concludes.

“Down and Donegal are gone now and the focus has to be on the next game.  Obviously Kildare are the Christy Ring champions last year but we’ll focus in house this week and get ourselves right for the game, we’ll put in our best performance and we’ll see where that takes us.”

Later in the summer, O’Doherty will be back in the maroon and white hoops.  He will be up against his Derry teammates as they aim to halt the Slaughtneil juggernaut.

For now it is about the red and the white.

A win this weekend would be a significant peak on the Derry hurling landscape.
