A Wexford woman has scooped a massive €50,000 on a National Lottery scratch card less than six months after winning the same amount on the same scratch card game, bought in the same shop!

It was April when this lucky winner first came through the doors of the National Lottery Winner’s Room after she won the top prize of €50,000 on an All Cash Platinum scratch card.

Today, she was back in the same seat in the winner’s room claiming another €50,000 that  she scooped  on the same All Cash Platinum game, which she bought in the same shop! That lucky shop is the Kiosk at the Abbey Centre in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford

The delighted Wexford woman  said: “It’s amazing. I really cannot believe it! I bought a few things for the house with the last win and still have a huge chunk of it left. So this win will allow us to share it out among the family! I was in the Kiosk and just thought I’d but a Platinum just to try my luck again and I just cannot believe that it was another winner! My husband is claiming that he has lucky hands as he scratched both cards but I told him that it’s my feet that are lucky as I was the one who walked to the shop to buy the cards when I was out!”

Meanwhile, another lucky woman from Tuam in Co. Galway collected a massive €60,005 Telly Bingo Snowball prize which she won on Thursday 20th September. The lucky Galway woman bought her winning ticket at the Topaz Service Station on the Galway Road in Tuam.

Barnardos needs parent and baby volunteers to visit schools for Roots of Empathy Programme

Barnardos children’s charity needs parent and baby volunteers to take part in their 2018/2019 Roots of Empathy Programme.

At the heart of the programme are a neighbourhood baby and parent, who visit a classroom every three weeks over the school year. Over the course of the year, a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor leads the pupils in noticing how the baby is growing and changing. The children also watch the loving relationship between the parent and baby, seeing how the parent responds to the baby’s emotions and meets the baby’s needs.  The baby needs to be between two -four months old at the start of the programme (October 2018).

The programme is proven to increase empathy - the ability to understand how another person feels. Children learn to care for and respect each other, which leads to a reduction in bullying and aggression.

Roots of Empathy currently needs parent and baby volunteers to take part in the programme.

A baby with one or both parents visits a local classroom over the course of a school year with a Roots of Empathy Instructor. The visits are about 30 minutes long, once a month starting in October and ending in June. The programme helps children to learn about a baby’s needs and how babies develop, and lets children observe the loving relationship between a parent and baby.

If you would like to become involved, or know of a family with a baby who would be two- four  months old in October and who may be interested in participating, please contact info.roe@barnardos.ie for more information on how you can become part of this wonderful programme.

The Moate Theatre will show Accidentally Famous for 1 night only this November

$

For one night only on November 14, at The Moat Theatre, Naas, Accidentally Famous will be showing.

There is a two storey stone house in the West of Ireland that has become an iconic image of rural Ireland. The farm house  that appeared for just seconds in the opening credits of hit TV show ‘Father Ted’, is still seen around in the world in repeat screenings and features in thousands of tourists’ photographs. The man who owns that house has his own fascinating story to tell; the award-winning film 'The Silver Branch' depicts the life and insights of this inimitable philosopher and poet and brings us a rare glimpse of a disappearing way of life with all its richness and roguery.

Patrick McCormack, a fifth generation Farmer in the austerely beautiful Burren in Co. Clare, longs to farm in the quiet pace his ascendants did. He dedicates himself to “the ancestral song – the symphony of life we were born into” and has a simple wish -  to live without fear. However, his life gains a different momentum when he’s called to battle in the Supreme courts to decide on the fate of this iconic wilderness.

Though it is centred around this remarkable story teller and his search for ‘unity of being’, this beautifully shot film  explores more universal themes. It is a story of life, love, family, grief, of commitment and of the struggles of modern day life, which invites the viewer to follow in mindful meditation, to take a journey into the self and exam the relationship between man and landscape, between tradition and spirit, between body and soul.

World famous screen actor, Brendan Gleeson describes the film: “Magical … a unique and an important cinematic gift. It is film making as it should be in Ireland today, finding the universal in the local with a sure-footedness that is most unusual.”

‘The Silver Branch’ is by first time Director/Cinematographer Katrina Costello and is at The Moat Theatre, Naas for one night only on Sunday 14th November. Tickets are €8 and available from www.moattheatre.com or 045 88 30 30

Co Kildare mother caring for 4 children while husband serves overseas for Defence Forces says she doubts they will ever afford to buy their own home

A Co Kildare woman married to a soldier deployed overseas for 12 months says she doubts they will ever afford to buy their own home.

Caroline( not her real name), said:”My husband and I have been married for  seven years we have four children, two in primary school, one in preschool and a nine month old baby. I was working full time until after my maternity leave when he was deployed overseas. My husband is serving a back to back trip overseas (12 months) so we can pay for rent, food, clothing and anything else we might need.”

She said“He is missing out on our children’s milestones and just having a cuddle with them. The children miss him and I miss him terribly. I am alone with four young children and we have to rent in an area that is cheaper than around the Curragh Camp as it’s very expensive. I don’t drive and my family are not in the same town as me either. Owning our own home is a dream we once had. Even though he is overseas making money with all the usual bills , gas electricity, rent,  I doubt we will ever have enough for a deposit and get a mortgage that would be enough to buy a home. "

The Co Kildare mother said: “It is a struggle most days but we try our best and just take it day by day.  We were on the council list and last October we were taken off it because we earned too much as a couple. I’m trying to get back on the list but not being entertained as my husband is earning too much overseas. I often wonder would we be better off if we didn't work. We are damned if we do and damned if we don’t.”

She said: “It breaks my heart to think of all that he has missed in our children’s lives and that my children don’t have the luxury of having a Dad to tuck them in at night and give them a goodnight kiss. This is not a life, it’s an existence.”

According to Sarah Walshe, the midlands representative for Wives & Partners of the Defence Forces, says that many Defence Force members are not qualifying for mortgages.

Several are at risk of homelessness.

Last week, thousands marched in Dublin, to show solidarity for the Defence Forces attempting to get improved pay and conditions. Rents are too high in many cases for the Defence Forces members and their families around Co Kildare. Soldiers are being forced to work at other jobs including take-away delivery drivers and in bar jobs to feed their families.

Ms Walshe said: “Many landlords don’t want to see people with children, they want working couples.”

According to the Department of Defence statement: “The starting pay for a newly qualified three star private, and their Naval Service equivalent, (inclusive of military service allowance) is now €27,257, gross annual earnings, with scope for further income from duty allowances. This is a significant increase on the €21,800 per annum which was the annual amount prior to the implementation of the increases in pay received through recent pay agreements. The starting pay for a Corporal, including Military Service Allowance, is over €37,000 per annum. The first point on the payscale for a Sergeant, including Military Service Allowance, is €40,000 per annum.”

Protests in Dublin for improved pay and conditions for Irish Defence Forces

Co Wicklow woman reappears on Winning Streak after 19 years

A roofer from Co. Wicklow went on Winning Streak for his wife and did her proud, winning her a cool €37,000 on the first National Lottery show of the new series on RTE One.

Meanwhile, Co Wicklow’s lucky Winning Streak continues as another two locals have been selected to appear on this week’s show – with one player appearing on the show for a second time!

Kathleen Poole, from Rathdrum, Co.Wicklow, who will go on Winning Streak for the second time this Saturday, 19 years after appearing on the show, then presented by Mike Murphy.

All those years ago she won £23,400 (Irish punts) which really was a pretty penny back then and Kathleen is hoping to do as well this time around and even has hopes of spinning the wheel this time! That’s not the only bit of luck her family has had on National Lottery and RTÉ game shows as her sister, Maud Doyle, who will be cheering her on in the audience on Saturday, was on the Big Money Game back in 2011 where she won €20,000.

Kathleen actually missed her name being pulled out of the drum by mere seconds after she watched the first part of the show on Saturday but had to leave as she had plans to go and play the card game Whist with friends.

She has been married to husband John, a farmer, for the past 47 years and the couple have six children and nine grandchildren so she won’t be short of support in the studio on Saturday.

It was a weekend to remember for Wicklow’s James McCormack and his wife Pauline after Pauline’s name was selected to appear on the first show of the new Winning Streak series last week. After getting the call to let her know her name had been pulled out of the Winning Streak drum, Pauline decided that this was a job best suited to James and duly asked him to go on the show for her! He didn’t let his wife down as he won a massive €37,000 on the show.

James is a roofer by trade and has his own business – Ranger Roofing, based in Greystones. He says business is very good and it has being going for more than 30 years, having set up in 1984. Despite living in Greystones in Co. Wicklow for the past 24 years, James remains a true Dublin blue and is revelling in the recent success of the Dublin footballer’s four-in-a-row All-Ireland triumph. Having played rugby earlier in his life, GAA was his first love and is a huge football and hurling fan. He is also an avid golfer and sailor and is a member of Charlestown Golf Club in Greystones and Wicklow sailing club.

Also on the show this Saturday (29th September) is Arklow’s Pat Monaghan, who got the surprise of his life when he was watching the first Winning Streak show of the new series and saw Marty and Sinead call his name out to be on next week’s programme!

He was watching the show with his wife, of 43 years, Esma who he claims is a massive Streak fan who never misses an episode. Pat and Esma have four adult children (Patrice, Róisin, Peter and Patrick Junior) and six lovely little grandchildren. Five of his grandchildren will join his supporters coming up from Wicklow

Pat has settled from the initial shock and is raring to go on Saturday and says he hopes to take his family on holiday with any Winning Streak winnings. He is a huge sports fan and, even though GAA is his passion, he would watch any sport. He played as a fullback for his local side Arklow Rocks for many years and played on well into his forties. He can still be found supporting the local team frequently and the Sunday Game is a staple in his house!

Nowadays he still likes to keep fit by cycling and hillwalking. In fact he celebrated the news he was going to be on Winning Streak by doing the Glen to Glen (Glendalough to Glenamalure) hillwalk with Esma on Sunday.

A total of €185,000 was won on last week’s week’s show. The enhanced National Lottery game show, co-presented by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy, features some perennial favorite games as well brand new games including Play or Pay, Roll for Riches, WinFall and Electric Dream – where one player will win an electric car worth €25,000.

Housing crisis with some properties in Dublin currently seeking €10,000 per month & Ministers due to launch National Implementation Plan in the morning

$

0

Tomorrow morning  the Minister for Health and the Minister for Housing are due to launch what they are calling the National Implementation Plan for Housing.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10.30am at St Agatha's Court, North William St, Dublin 1.

According to the Government, Housing First is a proven solution to homelessness for people who have been rough sleeping, and long-term users of emergency hostels and shelters, with high needs around mental health and addiction.

A Government spokesperson said: "It provides homeless individuals with a stable, secure home of their own as quickly as possible in order to effectively target them with personalised housing and health supports. These wrap-around services, which are provided for as long as needed, help people stay housed and support them in their recovery."

Meanwhile, this September 25,  there are currently houses for rent in Dublin at €10,000 per month.  On Daft.ie today  one can get a six bedroom townhouse in Leeson St, for €10,000 per month while in Ranelagh there is currently a  house renting  for €5,000 per month.  On Leeson St Upper, a person can now rent a one bedroom apartment for €700 per week.

Real and effective rent transparency measures need to be introduced, along with the creation of sustainable urban communities, if the Government is to begin to make any progress on tackling the ongoing crisis in the private rented market. That’s according to national housing charity, Threshold in response to figures from the latest Daft.ie Rental Price Report, released in August.

The report, which covers the second quarter of 2018, indicates a 12.4 per cent increase in rents nationally in the year to June 2018, once again pushing rents to an all-time high of €1,304, on average.

Commenting, chief executive of Threshold, John-Mark McCafferty said: “It is abundantly clear that the housing market is broken. Consecutive governments have done little to stop this, leaving families right across the country struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Private rents have doubled in some areas of Dublin since 2011, and more recently rents in cities such as Waterford and Limerick have risen by around 20 per cent – far faster than average wages – which means people are increasingly struggling to pay their rent. Fear of homelessness is a real issue for many of Ireland’s renters: of the more than 7,000 people who contacted Threshold’s Tenancy Protection Service so far this year, 47 per cent were querying rental terminations, rent reviews, rent increases and receiverships."

He added: “Currently, the law provides that a tenant is to be informed of the previous rent but there is nothing to ensure this. For this reason, Threshold is urgently calling for real and effective rent transparency measures to hold landlords to account and give potential and sitting tenants the details they need to make informed choices or to challenge an illegal rent setting at the Residential Tenancies Board. The Government recently announced legislation to address this issue, however, it would appear that the intention is only to publish average rents for a given area rather than at individual tenancy level. It is Threshold’s view that the devil is in the detail – we believe that the provision of more granular information is the only way to empower tenants with the knowledge they need to vindicate their rights.”

Chair of Threshold, Aideen Hayden said: “Over the years, an ideology that has equated social housing with dependency, and home ownership as morally superior has now left generations struggling to access either. For more than 40 years, Threshold has been to the fore in campaigning for better standards and greater rights for tenants. Renting in the private sector is increasingly the tenure of choice, as well as being the only option for those excluded from social housing and owner occupation, and we need strong measures to protect tenants more than ever.  We need to actively rethink the future of our towns and cities; we must act with foresight to create resilient and liveable communities. Above all, we urgently need politicians of all parties to sit up and take notice of the rising numbers of renters struggling, and they must ensure that they do all they can to protect them.”

A resident in Kildare Town has complained of overnight engineering works on the railway line that woke up her family.

Works began on the Irish Rail line in the Loughminane area at around 1am and lasted up to 30 minutes.

A local resident who contacted KildareNow, said: "We live near the railway line in Kildare Town and we were woken up by loud machinery working on the line at around 1am last night.

"There was no prior notice of any work of this kind.

"There was a loud scraping, grating sound for 30 minutes or more.

"All the dogs in nearby houses started barking at the noise and it was difficult to go back to sleep."

Technical problems

The works may be related to a technical problem with points failure in Kildare yesterday morning [Tuesday].

All services later resumed but were subject to up to 35 minute delays.

And on Monday morning, the 06:35 Kildare to Heuston service was cancelled due to an 'operational issue' according to Irish Rail.

Line improvement works

Iarnród Éireann carries out regular line improvement works on its lines to provide for the smoother running of trains.

More work is planned on the Kildare line for Saturday, October 6.

The 22:02hrs Kildare to Dublin Heuston service will be cancelled and the 22:10hrs Dublin Heuston to Portlaoise service will operate to Kildare only with bus transfers from Kildare to Portlaoise.

By Kim O'Leary

This week Ireland is experiencing a mini 'Indian Summer' with warmer conditions than per usual for this time of year, and today temperatures are expected to reach 20C with cloudy conditions and some patchy drizzle forecast for Co Kildare.

According to Met Eireann, it will be a cloudy start to the morning with some patchy drizzle in places with better sunshine developing through the day for Co Kildare. Becoming fairly warm with highs of 17 to 20 degrees in light breezes.

Dry overnight with lows of 6 to 10 degrees. Fog patches in a few places.

Tomorrow Thursday will be generally dry but cloud increasing through the day and some patchy light rain or drizzle in the afternoon/ evening. Becoming clear over the north of the Leinster later in the afternoon. Highs of 15 to 17 degrees in light breezes. Dry and clear overnight in most places.

Friday: Dry and bright with good sunshine but cooler with highs of 12 to 14 degrees in northerly breezes. Clear and chilly overnight with grass frost. Lows of 2 to 4 degrees.

Weekend: High pressure will continue to bring settled conditions to the country but still cool with highs of 12 to 15 degrees.

Meanwhile, according to Prof. Peter O'Donnell of Irish Weather Online, the start of October next week will see conditions become colder with frost in places.

He said: "The week of 1 to 5 October is looking dry and near normal in temperature, with some risk of frost most nights, highs 12 to 15 C. The influence of high pressure will fade late in the week and into the following weekend, with more of a cold northerly influence replacing the high, and some quite cold (for mid-October) weather appears possible."
