Burtown House and Gardens will be hosting the Rare and Special Plant Fair, in association with Bord Bia, on Sunday May 13. The KWWSPCA has been asked to man the 'Plant Creche' where customers can leave their purchased plants until they go home. We can collect donations and it should be a good way to raise much needed funds for the Society.

Volunteers are needed to help with the Creche and also to help wheelbarrow plants from the Creche to the customers' cars when they are ready to leave.

Knowledge of plants is not necessary, say KWWSPCA.

If you could spare a couple of hours on Sunday 13 May to help the KWWSPCA please email kwwspca@gmail.com or call/text 087 6803295. People are needed from 9-6pm and they will have a rota so that no one needs to do more than two hours, unless they want to.

Cllr Brendan Young has asked Kildare Co Council to investigate what powers it has in relation to property management companies.

The local politician said residents sometimes have issues with management companies if they carry out unsatisfactory maintenance works.

Cllr Young will raise the issue at the next Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District meeting being held in Naas on Friday, May 18.

Separately, at the same meeting, Councillor Young will also ask for a full report to be given on any outstanding issues or works to be completed by the contractor or developer in Hazelwood Park Estate in Celbridge.

Cllr Young said residents have recently been informed that the developer will shortly no longer be responsible for any works in the estate.

Co Wicklow farmer finds 13 sheep with fatal injuries after dogs attack, Naas District Court hears

$
0
0

A Co Wicklow farmer told Naas District Court how 13 of his sheep lost their lives, after being savaged by dogs.

A 54-year-old man  appeared in court, facing charges of not having dog licences and having dogs worrying livestock, on November 6, 2015.

The farmer claimed that it was neighbour's dogs, two Staffordshire bull terriers, one of whom was a puppy,  that killed the sheep.

He said that he saw them on the field at about 1am. He told the court that he first saw dead sheep at about 7pm and again about 1am.

He told the court how some sustained injuries to such an extent, they had to be put down, 13 sheep in total lost their lives.

Despite, the accused having the dogs put down, after the sheep were found savaged, he denies that it was his dogs that carried out the attacks on the sheep.

At Naas District Court, on Thursday last, he said: "They could not have been my dogs, I had them at the vet that evening, they had been unwell."

Evidence was heard how the accused offered the farmer to pay the vets costs and an average of €1,500. However, the farmer said that he did not receive any money for the losses incurred by the dead sheep, which he estimated was €2,500.

Garda evidence said that on calling to the accused house, they saw two dogs.

The Garda said: "One had a blood stain on his head, it looked like fresh blood."

The court heard how the accused made a voluntary caution statement on December 23, 2015, saying that the putting the dogs down was not an admission of guilt.

In court, the accused said that on the day in question, he had brought his dogs to a vet as 'they could not stand and were very lethargic.'

The vet informed him that they had a womb infection and were given antibiotics.

The accused said that the sight of the dead sheep was 'horrible.'

He said: "It was a horrible sight."

Judge Desmond Zaidan asked if the farmer would accept a settlement of damages, which the accused said he would be willing to pay, €1,500.

However, the farmer refused to accept this settlement.

In court, the accused's wife said: "The dogs were very sick, it is very difficult to understand how they could have killed so many sheep."

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "Here we have a case of dead sheep and dead dogs, dogs are unpredictable."

Inspector Mel Smyth said: "These dogs were able to run out to a patrol car, the witness says he saw them loose in the field."

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed two fines of €400 each for not having dog licences.

Judge Zaidan said that he would take into account the accused took the decision to have the dogs put down and on the charge of  having dogs worrying livestock, he imposed the Probation Act Section 1(1).

Today  Revenue officers at Dublin Port took custody of three puppies and an adult dog when they stopped and questioned a UK national, in routine operations.

The man was travelling to the UK, and did not have pet passports for the dogs, nor were the pups microchipped as required under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.

The German shepherd puppies were transferred into the care of the DSPCA, where they are receiving veterinary attention.

Revenue collaborates closely with the DSPCA and other agencies to combat the illegal trade in puppies.

A follow-up investigation is now in progress.

Robert Strzelczyk, 34, and Gregoritz Staltynski, 41, were both arrested on Sunday evening following the discovery of the alleged illegal drugs in a house in the St Raphael's Manor estate.

The two suspects appeared in Blanchardstown District Court in Dublin on Tuesday morning.

Detective Garda Glenn Somers of the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau told Judge David McHugh that Strzelczyk of The Paddocks, Brownhills Road, Carlow has been charged with possession of MDMA (ecstasy) in powder and tablet form with intent to sell or supply.

Detective Somers said the accused made no reply after he was charged and cautioned at 8.02pm on Monday night at Lucan Garda Station.

Calls for Kildare artists to be given more workshop space as part of redevelopment works at The Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge

$

By Kim O'Leary

Cllr Mark Lynch calling for artists to be given full-time space for work as redevelopment works planned for The Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge.

Sinn Fein Cllr Mark Lynch has welcomed the announcement of the redevelopment of the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge which is set to take place at the end of 2018.

That the council ensures that with the welcome redevelopment of the Riverbank Theatre at Newbridge, that suitable space is made available for general community use and consideration given to providing a "full-time space for County Kildare artists to have a workshop space and exhibition space and that dialogue is opened up with the same on having a potential full time location site" at the Riverbank.

Riverbank Arts Centre, located on the main street of Newbridge in Co Kildare, is a vibrant multidisciplinary arts centre made up of a 180 seat venue, a digital cinema facility, a visual art gallery and a small dedicated children’s gallery space.

Having recently applied to the Department of Arts (‘Creative Ireland Arts and Culture Capital Scheme 2016, Stream 2'), for a large capital grant to develop and refurbish the Arts Centre facilities, Riverbank Arts Centre was one of two venues in the country awarded the top amount of €1m to deliver its proposed plan.

With a match funding agreement of €1m in place with Kildare County Council, the aim of this refurbishment is to provide the county of Kildare with a flagship venue, and a universally accessible Arts Centre operating on a local, national and international level.

According to the Riverbank Arts Centre Capital Development Project 2018-2019, this project aims to bring the existing facility up to the highest of standards, allow the building to meet current regulations and afford all members of the community an opportunity to comfortably access the centre and engage in its activities.

The Riverbank Theatre intends to construct a new area of 405 m2 which will increase the building’s footprint from 1615 m2 to 2020 m2. With the internal layout reconfigured to also provide the centre with a dedicated workshop room, a spacious children’s gallery and the unique offering of adult changing facilities for those with special needs.

While the physical theatre and gallery spaces will be out of operation during the works, the Riverbank team will use the opportunity to present an off-site programme to the community and surrounding areas.

It is hoped that the increased seating capacity and level of comfort will provide the centre with the chance to attract more acts to perform at the centre.

By Kim O'Leary

Staff at the Queally Group, a food processing and manufacturing firm based in the Maudlins, are celebrating after achieving certification to ISO 50001, a key international energy management standard.

One of the world’s most popular business standards, ISO 50001 for Energy Management can help an organisation to reduce its energy usage, and therefore its greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.

The Queally Group site in Naas is involved in the manufacture and supply of a range of cooked, fermented and dried meat ingredients, filled and unfilled fresh & frozen pasta, ready to cook protein meal solutions, fresh and frozen natural stocks and culinary sauces in a variety of pack sizes & and formats.

The site also provides cold storage internally and to group companies and third parties.

The company, which employs 950 people, received its ISO 50001 certificate at a special presentation ceremony at the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) offices in Dublin.

“ISO 50001 is recognition for the journey that the Queally group has embarked upon to ensure that we are sustainable in our methods of manufacturing and practices,” said Kenneth Elliott, Project Engineer at the Queally Group.

All of the organisations who achieved certification were independently audited by NSAI inspectors in order to ensure they complied with the standards.

They join an elite group of over 3,000 organisations who are currently NSAI-certified in a variety of areas such as Quality Management Systems, Environmental Management Systems, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and Energy Management.

The 25 organisations honoured at the ceremony have offices or facilities in 15 different counties and were presented with their certificates by the Irish Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen TD.

“Achieving certification to the highest level is no easy feat, especially for SMEs, given the level of commitment needed and time required to do so,” said Minister Breen.

“But the benefits are undoubtedly worth it. Standards improve efficiency, helping organisations to conserve money, manpower, time, facilities, and natural resources. They also help in breaking down trade barriers and open doors to new markets,” he added.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, NSAI Chief Executive Geraldine Larkin highlighted the importance of businesses using standards in uncertain times.

“The question for industry is not what you gain from standards and certification; it's the business opportunities lost without them,” said Ms Larkin.

“Globally recognised standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and now ISO 45001 provide you with instant credibility: they differentiate your products, services and business,” she added.

Catholic primary schools in Co Kildare to remove 'baptism barrier' by September 2019

A number of Catholic primary schools in Co Kildare will see the introduction of new rules banning discrimination against children who are not baptised in their school admission policies, with the Minister for Education confirming that the changes will be in place by September 2019.

Yesterday, the Cabinet approved a proposed amendment to remove the "baptism barrier" for Catholic primary schools, which had required children wishing to enter schools to have been baptised.

Education Minister Richard Bruton has announced the "baptism barrier" change as part of the wider reform of school admissions, while it also approved new powers for the minister to compel schools to open specialised facilities for children with disabilities where there is a need for he specialised facilities.

Speaking of the baptism barrier ban, Minister Bruton said: "It is unfair that a local child of no religion is passed over in favour of a child of religion, living some distance away for access to their local school. Parents should not feel pressured to baptise their child to get access to their local school.

The baptism barrier has been a hotly debated topic in recent years with previous ministers for education being advised that it was not legally possible to enforce the ban, although a spokesperson for the Department of Education said that they had "worked extensively with the Office of the Attorney General to ensure the amendments being introduced are constitutionally robust".

All of the country's 2,800 Catholic primary schools will have to rewrite their admissions policies and remove religion as a criterion for entry. However, not all Catholic schools will be materially affected, as most, particularly in rural areas, can accommodate all newcomers.

Meanwhile, the other two amendments also passed in the Cabinet yesterday provide for Irish medium schools to give priority to Irish-speaking children and give power to the minister to require a school to open a special class for children with special educational needs.

Other key features of the proposed legislation include a ban on school waiting lists and a ban on deposits in non fee-charging schools.

Mr Bruton has also confirmed that, for the first time, there will be a cap, of 25pc, on the number of places schools may reserve for children of past pupils.
