Cllr calling on Kildare County Council to facilitate recycling amabassador programmes for the county

By Kim O'Leary

Naas Councillor Sorcha O'Neill is asking Kildare County Council to facilitate Recycling Ambassador Programs throughout the county at the next council meeting.

This grant scheme is part of a campaign to re-engage the public in recycling and will be run by VOICE – Ireland’s leading environmental ENGOs tackling waste - and will receive significant funding from Repak. This program asks community groups to engage in face-to-face conversations with their neighbours to clear up recycling confusion and to understand barriers individuals face by documenting their views through surveys.

The public is becoming more and more environmentally conscious and we hope the list will make recycling easier for people, reducing contamination in the recycling bin, which can be as high as 40% in some areas of Dublin. Contamination averages 25% in the recycling bin nationwide, with Cork and Kerry leading the way at 15%.

Groups who are awarded this new grant will nominate a community coach to help their local area to get their recycling bins sorted and carry out activities that support the Recycling Ambassador Programme objectives of reducing contamination in the recycling bin and raising Irish recycling rates.

Repak is supporting this national scheme that encourages behavioural change in consumers when it comes to packaging recycling. Partnering with the Recycling Ambassador Programme, promoting best recycling practices and educating the public on what can and cannot go into the recycling bin.

Independent councillor Sorcha O'Neill is asking the council and its 40 strong council members to support this program in their areas. "You don't have to wait for this to be discussed at council level, groups can start their own and apply for the grants themselves by visiting the website VoiceIreland.org. Closing date for applications is 13th April 2018."

The motion will be proposed for discussion the full council meeting on the 26th March 2018.

Ruby Walsh has been stood down after the second race on day two of Cheltenham as he was brought to hospital with a suspected broken leg following a fall in the RSA Insurance Novices’ Chase.

The Kill jockey had already ran in the opening race of the day on board Next Destination, but he suffered the injury when falling from Al Boum Photo in the second race. He has been brought to hospital with a suspected broken leg and was due to undergo x-rays to assess the damage.

It meant that Walsh in unable to partner Douvan in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, while also putting his participation at the rest of the festival and next month’s Punchestown Festival in doubt.

It also allowed a window of opportunity for Clane jockey Mark Walsh as he stepped in for the Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle and mounted Bleu Berry, whom he led home in first for Willie Mullins at odds of 20/1.

Drinkaware encourages people to be mindful of their drinking habits ahead of St Patrick's Day

$

By Kim O'Leary

With St. Patrick's Day and a bank holiday just around the corner this weekend there's much for the Irish people to celebrate, but Drinkaware is reminding people to be mindful of their drinking during the festivities.

Ahead of St Patrick’s Day and this weekend’s bank holiday Drinkaware are encouraging everyone to access the tools available on their website www.drinkaware.ie which are widely used and supported by frontline healthcare and education professionals to make people aware of the risks they face through frequent binge drinking.

Drinkaware work to educate people with the facts about alcohol and they want to support people to make practical, positive changes to their drinking habits and to see health benefits as a result.

According to research carried out by Drinkaware, over 90% of Irish adults attach considerable importance to raising awareness around low-risk guidelines for weekly alcohol consumption and so far in 2018 over 25,000 people have used the Drinkaware online Drinks Calculator to monitor their intake but 70% of Irish adults believe drinking to excess is ‘just a part of Irish culture’

Ahead of St. Patrick’s Day and the March Bank Holiday weekend, Drinkaware have some simple changes people can make to reduce their alcohol consumption:

Alternate each drink with a glass of water to reduce the dehydration associated with alcohol

Always use a standard drink measure: never free-pour spirits or wine

Never top up your wine glass – always finish one glass before refilling

Downsize your drink by choosing lower alcohol beer and wine

Avoid rounds – you may end up drinking more than you intended.

Niamh Gallagher, CEO of Drinkaware, said:“While we are encouraged by many of the positive findings in our research, we know that long weekends and public holidays create more opportunities for drinking alcohol. In many cases, this can result in people drinking more than usual and above the low-risk guidelines, often without intending to. We each have our part to play in changing how we use alcohol in this country, and in creating a country where alcohol is not misused. Any kind of long-term behaviour change is difficult and it is clear that there is still work to do in this area."

She added: "We urge people to check out the simple tools available on the Drinkaware website over the long weekend. These tools provide people with important feedback on their habits as well as practical ways to reduce their intake, and we encourage people to monitor and track their alcohol use in the same way as they might monitor calories, sugar and exercise. It is clear we are becoming more aware of how excessive drinking affects our health and wellbeing and Drinkaware will continue our efforts in working with parents, communities and frontline organisations to keep up this pace of change.”

A weather warning is in place for Kildare tonight as extremely heavy rainfall is set to hit the county in the coming hours.

Following on from an absolutely miserable day of strong winds and torrential downpours, it is set to remain wet and windy overnight, possibly leading to flooding in some areas.

"Periods of heavy rain overnight and on Wednesday will lead to accumulations of 30 to 50mm generally, with some larger amounts on higher ground. Some localised flooding expected," warned Met Eireann.

The weather warning has been issued for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford and has been in place since this morning.

Rain will clear northeastwards tonight to scattered showers and clear spells in the southwest and west by morning. However, staying cloudy and misty with rain persisting in northern and some eastern counties through the night. Strong and gusty southeast winds will continue to ease. Lowest temperatures of 5-8 degrees.

Rain in northern areas will slowly clear during Thursday morning but elsewhere will be a brighter and drier day with showery rain affecting mainly the south and west. Top temperatures of 9-12 degrees in moderate to fresh southeast winds.

Naas forward Duggan returns to Irish team looking to win 6 Nations this weekend

Naas forward Jordan Duggan is back in the Irish starting team for the final round of the U20 Six Nations Championship.

The Naas prop missed out on the thrilling win over Scotland in Donnybrook last weekend, but he has been named to start for the Irish as they travel to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to face England on Friday night.

Ireland are still in with a chance of winning the Six Nations despite losing to both France and Wales, and if they can beat England and Wales defeat France in the final round it will mean that Noel McNamara's side will win the championship.

"It was good to come away with the bonus point win last Friday in Donnybrook, and while there are areas of our game we can improve on, the result has left us in a good place ahead of Friday’s fixture," said McNamara.

England are always a stiff challenge at this level and it’s set to be a great opportunity for the players, but one I know they are excited for."

Heavy traffic delays in numerous parts of Kildare due to various incidents

Motorists are experiencing traffic delays in many areas of Kildare this evening.

With high winds and heavy rain falling all over the county there are reports of trees down on some roads that are causing obstructions, while there have also been a couple of incidents to slow traffic down.

There are reports of an accident on the N7 outbound near the Red Cow Interchange, and traffic is very heavy on approach to that area.

On the N7 further out there are delays from J7 Kill to J10 Naas South.

However, traffic is heaviest on the R409 between Naas and Caragh where it has been at a near standstill from the Millennium Park Link Road to Caragh village for some time now.

Kildare's Katie Walsh lands 33/1 winner in Cheltenham on bittersweet day for family

$

Katie Walsh made it a third festival win of her career at Cheltenham when she landed the Weatherby Champion Bumper in the final race this evening with Relegate.

The Kildare jockey came from nowhere to usurp leader - and stablemate - Carefully Selected to win the bumper for trainer Willie Mullins, a fine achievement for Walsh whose mount went out as a rank 33/1 outsider with some bookmakers.

It was a bittersweet day for the Walsh family after Ruby suffered a suspected broken leg when falling off Al Boum Photo in the second race of the day, leading to him being stood down for the rest of the afternoon.

It looks like the Kill man's season could be over if it is a second leg break in the space of five months, having only returned to the saddle six days ago in Thurles to make it to Cheltenham.

Another Kildare jockey, Mark Walsh, was also on the mark for Willie Mullins as he captured the Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle with Bleu Berry.

Mark Walsh, who took over from jockey Paul Townend who switched horses following Ruby Walsh's injury, said;

"You don't want to ride a winner like that and Paul would have rode him before getting on Ruby's horse, but I'm just delighted to be called up by Willie to ride him.

"They went a nice gallop and everything went to plan.

"We got the splits, he winged the last, and had enough petrol in the tank."

President Higgins pays tribute to legendary Kildare musician who has passed away

$

President Michael D Higgins has paid a glowing tribute to the late Liam Ó'Flynn after the talented Uilleann pipes player passed away.

The Kill native was a member of the Planxty group and was well-known for performing alongside musicians Christy Moore, Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny.

He passed away following a battle with illness.

Liam was born in 1945 and played the Uilleann pipes from an early age, becoming a master of his craft and earning a reputation as one of the best pipe players around.

In a moving statement from President Higgins, the Galway native said;

"People all over Ireland, and further afield, will have heard with sadness of the death of Liam Ó Flynn, renowned musician and Uilleann pipes player.

"He leaves an important and lasting legacy, through his music, but also through his generous, uplifting and committed approach to the role of music in Ireland’s cultural heritage, contributing to composition and performance with orchestras and in film.

"As one of the sources of inspiration behind the founding, in 1968, of Na Píobairí Uilleann, Liam Ó Flynn can be credited with having contributed to the revival of the Uilleann Pipers, and it must to him have been a source of great pride and satisfaction that UNESCO, the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, recently added the Uilleann pipes to its register of important and unique cultural heritage symbols.

"Liam Ó Flynn will be remembered for his performances and recordings – many of them on the Claddagh Records label founded by his lifelong friend Garech de Brún – with groups and artists such as Planxty, Seán Ó Ríada, the Chieftains, Shaun Davy, Seamus Heaney and countless others who shared his love for music, in all its wonderful forms.

"As President of Ireland I pay tribute to his work and legacy and offer my deepest sympathies with members of his family, his friends, colleagues and all those who enjoy and support Irish music."

Athy to host biggest St Patrick’s Day Parade ever! Starting 1.45pm on Saturday, March 17 - expect to see jugglers, stilt walkers and - will the cow jump over the moon?!

“Athy's 2018 St Patrick's Day Parade will be bigger and brighter than ever” so says a member of the organising group, Athy Town Promoters. The parade commences on Saturday, March 17 at 1.45 pm from the Athy Business Campus (Kilkenny Road) with route along William Street, Duke Street and ending at top of Leinster Street (where the Review Stand will be located).

Organisers of this Saturday's long anticipated St Patrick's Day Parade in Athy have willingly 'sacrificed the start time’ says the Mayor of Kildare, Cllr Martin Miley, in order to allow rugby followers to view Ireland v England at Twickenham for the decider of the Triple Crown.

Joe Schmidt's side clinched a third Six Nations title with last Saturday's 28-8 victory against Scotland . Mayor Miley Cllr Martin Miley Junior, will be attending the festive parade in New York whilst Cllr Ivan Keatly, Chair of Athy MD will oversee the parade from the viewing podium. Also in the podium will be well known international boxers, Eric Donovan and Roy Sheahan, Ireland’s Last Man Standing along with local dignitaries and public representatives.

Met Eireann have warned that temperatures may drop as low as -5 degrees over St Patrick's weekend.

With Storm Emma and the Beast from the East still strong in the memory, the country can expect more freezing temperatures and snow on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The east of the country is expected to remain dry on St Patrick's Day, but there will be an extreme chill throughout the day as temperatures will hover between 1 and 4 degrees. Overnight on Saturday, there will be showers of snow across many parts of Leinster as tempertures plummet to -4 degrees.

Sunday will bring showers of sleet, but it won't be quite as bad in the east as it will be in other parts of the country. Temperatures will again be low, ranging from 2-4 degrees.

A sharp frost is expected to set in on Sunday night as values drop to a bitterly cold -5 degrees, with a risk of ice also.

Bank of Ireland in Naas recently presented Naas RFC with rugby balls as part of their sponsorship of the Towns Cup.

Bank of Ireland is a strong supporter of rugby in Ireland and currently sponsor Leinster, Munster and Ulster rugby.

Through the Towns Cup and other initiatives they also support local grass roots, community based rugby clubs.

Naas senior team currently plays in Division 1B of the Ulster Bank All Ireland League. They are the leading Leinster club outside of Dublin, which is a huge achievement and something the club and the community are very proud of. However, the club is about much more than the first team. Naas RFC field four other senior sides, while the youths, minis and girls sections continue to grow and prosper.

“Our club, like many others, relies on the generous support of the community and the local businesses within the community to survive and thrive. We are very grateful for that support without which we would have no rugby; and without rugby we have no club”, said President, Willie Downey.

Clodagh Hughes, Bank of Ireland added “we are delighted to support Naas RFC and those who work hard to develop the game at all age levels and enhance the facilities in Forenaughts. We were also pleased to provide sponsorship at the recent Race Day fundraising event, a very successful day, both financially and socially, for the club”.
