Kildare ladies side named as Lilies prepare for league opener against Offaly

New Kildare ladies manager Daniel Moynihan has named his first team for the 2018 season as the Lilywhites get their league campaign underway against Offaly in Edenderry tomorrow at 2pm.

Following their relegation from Division 2 of the league and the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, 2018 is very much a rebuilding year for the Lilies under the Galway native who was appointed as the new manager in November.

That is reflected in the team picked to play the Faithful County on Saturday, with Rebecca McGuirk, Amy Horan, Caoimhe Keoghegan and Siobhan O'Sullivan all coming into the side for their first league starts. Róisín Byrne captains the side from centre-forward, while her clubmate Molly Price joins Ellen Dowling and Emer Fogarty in a formidable looking full-forward line.

Kildare were due to start their league season last Sunday against Leitrim, but that game was conceded by the Connacht side.

  1. Rebecca Mc Guirk- Suncroft
  2. Rachel Cribbin- Balyna
  3. Amy Horan- Ballymore

Kildare bucks the national trend as new car sale figures rise in January

$

0

Kildare bucked the trend in terms of car sales for the month of January this year as the figures rose by 0.71%, while nationally the numbers of new cars that were sold in comparison to the same period last year dropped by 4.8%.

New car registrations were up from 1,694 to 1,706 on the same period last year, representing an increase of 0.71%. Nationally, 181 registrations are down to 37,125 compared to January 2017 when there were 39,003 new cars bought. Light Commercials are currently up 6.3% (6,728) compared to January last year (6,329), while HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) registrations are down-11.84% (402) in comparison to January 2017 (456).

The SIMI/DoneDeal Report highlights a number of price decreases in the cost of motoring. The average price of a new car in 2017 was 2% lower than a year earlier, while the cost of motor insurance in December 2017 was 10.9% lower than it was a year earlier. However, the cost of fuel increased with Petrol prices up 4.2% and Diesel prices up 3.6% last year.

The report also shows Ireland’s strong economic performance last year but despite high levels of consumer confidence, the Motor Industry faced a significant and uncertain year with monthly declines in new car registrations figures, reflecting the substantial impact of Brexit. Used car imports increased by 29.5% in 2017 aided by the weakness in sterling and this also impacted on new car sales volumes by dampening the residual value of Irish used cars this increasing the cost to change for consumers.

Looking ahead to 2018, economic factors look positive however Brexit related uncertainty looks set to continue.

Jim Power Economist and author of the SIMI/DoneDeal Report commented: “In normal circumstances, the positive economic backdrop would be expected to deliver growth of up to 10% in the new car market in 2018. However, the distortionary impact of sterling weakness and the associated surge in used imports from the UK will in all likelihood more than offset the positive economics. For 2018, the used import market is projected to grow by 20% to reach 114,950. New car registrations in 2018 are forecast at 118,220, which would represent a decline of 10% on the 2017 outturn.”

Director General of SIMI - Alan Nolan further commented: “2017 finished down 10.4% as anticipated and also recorded a shift in the market-share of Diesel cars from 70% to 65%. The same trends have been apparent in January’s new car sales, which have delivered a steady start to the 181registration period but Brexit has continued to impact with new car sales down 4.8% while used car import registrations are up 20% compared to January last year. Diesel continues to be the choice of engine for over half of Irish new car buyers however the noticeable trend towards petrol and hybrid vehicles which started last year has continued in 2018. We expect this pattern of sales mix to continue for the rest of the year. While the number of Electric cars registered in January (104) shows a decline on January 2017 (168), this is a timing issue with supply and later new model delivery dates. The Sector remains confident that EV registrations will increase significantly in 2018.”

Kilcock GAA club member Sheena Byrne has been handed the Overall Volunteer of the Year award from the Ladies Gaelic Athletic Association for 2017. Awards were given to seven different people across a range different categories, which included honours for club officials, volunteers and members of the media.

Sheena received the Lulu Carroll award, named after the late Lulu Carroll, who was a 2001 All-Ireland senior medallist with Laois. She has been volunteering in ladies GAA for 14 years now and has been working as the club secretary, coordinating the playing and fundraising activities for the Kilcock's adult and juvenile sections, while still lining out as a player herself.

LGFA President Marie Hickey said at the awards: "We are really excited by the establishment of the new LGFA Volunteer awards and delighted to honour our very first winners.

"It is important to recognise our volunteers, who undertake sterling work in their local communities on behalf of our Association.

"We received a large volume of nominations and whittling them down to settle on winners was an onerous task.

"I would like to thank everybody who submitted nominations and we congratulate the winners.

"The awards event on Saturday, February 17, should be something to really savour and it will serve as a fitting tribute to the work carried out by our volunteers at home and abroad."

Allocation of €1.9M to Athy distributor road project lauded by business and political community in Kildare

The news of a €1.9 million allocation of funding towards the planned Athy Southern Distributor Road in Kildare has been lauded by various sections of the business and political landscape in Kildare.

It was revealed that a total of €29.5 million would be provided to the county by the National Road Authority for improvement and renewal works on the county's roads, and a big portion of it will go towards the funding of the new road in Athy which will help to ease commuter traffic.

County Kildare Chamber spokesperson Vivian Cummins noted; “The period in which public objections could be made via Judicial Review has elapsed so there are no planning impediments to the preferred route proceeding. This announcement is welcomed by the Chamber, as this funding allows for works to be carried out immediately. Hopefully, we will soon see a presence on site of actual works being carried out.”

Meanwhile, South Kildare TD Martin Heydon also hailed the plans set out by the government, stating that the project is vital for Athy.

"Following the grant of planning permission for the Athy Ring Road last year and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s visit to Athy in November, the allocation of funding for the Athy Road is further proof of this government's commitment to this vital project for Athy," he said.

"The funding of €1.9m will allow Kildare County Council progress with site works, preparation of contract documents and detailed design work in the coming months.

“The overall Kildare funding also includes provision for maintenance, improvement and restoration of local roads and bridges.  It is essential that our infrastructure is capable of meeting the demands of our expanding economy and the investment in Kildare’s large road network."

No details on what type of housing or the size of the dwellings has been released as of yet, but An Bord Pleanála are currently examining the proposal before returning a verdict on the application.

Lilies looking to bloom again under new management following turbulent 2017

$
0
0

Starting from a low ebb is one way to describe Kildare’s upcoming season in ladies’ football. Last year was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster as the senior team went through three managers over the course of a season, lost a number of experienced and pivotal players, and failed to win a match in either the league or championship.

All this after the momentous success of the previous year in which the Lilies realised a dream of winning the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, producing some stunning football and memorable moments on their way to glory in Croke Park.

The writing was on the wall for the 2017 campaign when Kerry man William O’Sullivan stepped away from the managerial post after just one training session, earmarking the loss of the experienced backbone of the All-Ireland winning side as the reasons behind his departure. Morgan O’Callaghan took charge of the side on an interim basis which actually lasted six months, and though he brought plenty of enthusiasm to the role there was little he could do to resurrect what looked to be a flailing season before it even began. The Lilies lost all of their league games and their Leinster Championship matches, before Mark Murnaghan was appointed to see out the year when O’Callaghan called it a day.

A defeat to beaten All-Ireland finalists Mayo followed, and Kildare found themselves back down in the Intermediate Championship, and down to Division 3 in the league as well.

Last November it was revealed that Galway man Daniel Moynihan would be coming in as the new manager, and the fact that he has had more than 10 weeks in his new role means the ladies are decisively more prepared then they were allowed to be last year. Training has been going on three nights each week, with Moynihan travelling up and down from his hometown of Ballinasloe to oversee progression alongside his trusty lieutenant, Nicholas MacDonnchadha. Moynihan and MacDonnchadha were in charge of the Clare side that lost to Kildare in the 2016 All-Ireland final, and the two travel up and down from Ballinasloe to Hawkfield together to take charge of training.

That training began with an open trial as the new management team ran the rule over a host of new faces. There are a number of the more established players not involved this year, most notably 2017 captain Erica Burke who will be in the US, so the open trials were needed to get a gauge on what was available to Moynihan.

“I think they have lost a few players now,” the new manager told KildareNow this week.

“That is why we went with an open trial system and just put it out to every club in the county to bring anyone they think is capable to come in. That’s the way we went about it, and we were lucky enough that we got over the 50 mark at the trials. We cut that down to 33 players for the league campaign and we’ll see how we go after that.”

It is all about building from the foundations up as Kildare set into the challenge of Division 3 with a new team this year, eyeing up possible promotion, but this campaign will inevitably be about getting refocused following the mess that was 2017. The Lilies will be putting out a young side, but with the likes of Trina Duggan, Shauna Kendrick, Roisin Byrne, Emer Fogarty, Grace Clifford and Aisling Curley all involved, there is a certain degree of proven intercounty class already within the group.

“I suppose it’s difficult to make any comparison between the two of them,” said Moynihan of preparations this year in comparison to last.

“Last year was such a….  I suppose a little bit of a mess at all levels, but this year we’re down in Division 3 and back down in intermediate. It’s probably more so about building a team from November when we started and hopefully developing it over the next couple of years and to build Kildare back up and pushing for an intermediate All-Ireland.”

Having managed the Clare ladies and the Galway minor footballers, Moynihan has seen plenty of Kildare in recent years. Knowing that the vacancy would arrive at the end of 2017, he set about trying to get a handle on the task at hand before making his interest in the job known. Having watched the Lilies twice in 2017, the Galway man was happy to throw his hat in the ring for the job, and the ladies’ county board were happy to proceed with him at the helm.

“I suppose when I was in charge of Galway with the minors we would have played Kildare minors a few times over the years,” he explained.

“They had some fantastic footballers. Last year I went to a couple of their big games – they played Cavan at home and Mayo in the championship, I went to those two games. It’s hard to put a finger on it; I just always had Kildare in the back of my mind as a county that I’d like to manage.”

The Lilies were supposed to open their league campaign last Sunday against Leitrim, but that game was called off as the Connacht side forfeited. Tomorrow they will face Offaly in Edenderry, with a 2pm throw-in scheduled for that tie.

At least a plan seems to be in place this year, and it will be interesting to see what promise the ladies can show come Sunday.

Judge says man driving at 200km per hour on M4 was not 'dangerous driving'

A Co Kildare man who the court heard was driving at 200 km per hour was not dangerous driving according to the Judge.

Evidence was given how on September 25, 2017, at the M4 Kilcock, the accused,  a 24-year-old man was found to be driving at a speed of 200km/hr in a 120km zone, at the M4 Kilcock, in a BMW.

The court heard how the accused was stopped by Gardaí when it was dark, at about 9.20pm.

Judge Brian O'Shea said that the charge should not be for dangerous driving as there was nothing to suggest that he was not in control of the car.

Inspector Mel Smyth said: "This speed is 80km over, this is so excessive."

Judge O'Shea said that in the foot of evidence, the charge should not be a Section 53, but the 'top end of a Section 52.'

Defence Barrister Sarah Connolly outlined that the accused is a carer for his disabled aunt and earns €190 per week.

In court Ms Connolly said: "His mother had an epileptic fit, he was trying to get back to her, he was fully co-operative."

Judge O'Shea convicted and fined the accused €600 for careless driving, with six months to pay.

Reward offered for information on valuable pistols stolen from Kildare with links to George Washington

$

A law firm in Dublin is offering a reward for any information that people can provide on the whereabouts of a pair of missing antique pistols that are said to be extremely valuable.

They were owned by the late Anne Bullitt, an American heiress who purchased and resided in Palmerstown House until her death in 2007. The pistols value is in the fact that they were reputedly given to French aristocrat Marquis de Lafayette by the first president of the US, George Washington, after America gained independence in 1776. Lafayette was a member of the American revolution after travelling to the States from France to aid the cause, and Washington is said to have given the pistols to him before he returned to France.

The connection with Ann Bullitt lies in the fact that her father William, a wealthy diplomat who was an American ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1936-1941, was given the pistols just days before the fall of France in the second World War as a thank you for his help to the French.

He was photographed in Life magazine holding the pistols in 1941.

Mr Bullitt stated that he gave the pistols to his daughter, Anne, and that “they are now on the mantel over the fireplace in my bedroom at my daughter’s stud, ‘Palmerstown’, County Kildare, Ireland”.

Anne married four men during her lifetime, divorcing them all, including one Irish man who was a racehorse trainer at Kildangan Stud. She lived by herself in Palmerstown House in her later years and passed away in 2007, nine years after agreeing to sell the vast Kildare estate for £10 million.

A number of her belongings have been auctioned off by her estate, but there is no sign of the two dueling pistols. How much exactly they are worth is unknown, but weapons of similar importance were sold for $2 million in the US in 2002.

Last week a Dublin law firm, Orpen Franks Solicitors, placed an advert in the Irish Times offering a reward for any information on the valuable pistols.

One of the biggest housing projects for some time in Kildare will go ahead after An Bord Pleanála upheld the decision of Kildare County Council to grant planning permission to Tom O'Brien, appointed Receiver over specified sssets of Declan Gardiner, for the construction of 385 new homes in Newbridge.

The huge development is set to cost in the region of €41 million and will be located at Rickardstown and Roseberry. Planning permission was granted in August 2017 for the project, but an appeal lodged in September threatened to stop it in its tracks. An Bord Pleanála upheld the council's original decision however, meaning the development will go ahead as planned.

There will be a mixture of 3/4 bedroom houses that will take up 327 of the new units, while there will be 48 three-storey duplexes and 24 one and two-bed apartments, along with six two-storey two-bed townhouses and four three-storey three-bed townhouses totalling 44,473 sq metre gross floor area.

The proposed development also includes a two-storey crèche building (541 sqm) and associated parking, 19,449 sqm of public open space, associated internal road network, public lighting, surface water attenuation, landscaping and all associated site clearance/demolition and site development works and connections to site services.

An Environment Impact Statement has been prepared in respect of the planning application. Planning Permission is sought for a period of seven years to allow for development on a phased basis. The site measures approximately 13.1 Ha (12.8 Ha developable area) and is bounded by Sexes Road to the south, "Roseberry Hill" to the southeast, Mooney's Road to the north, Rickardstown House to the northwest and Station Road to the west.

The application site is proposed to be accessed from Station Road and via Roseberry Hill.
