Naas Mayor is appealing for banning of election posters on Main St as 'the prospect of a December election looms over us like the Christmas gift that no one wanted'

The Mayor of Naas is appealing for a clamp down of election posters on the run up to Christmas.

Following the official turning on of the lights in Naas at the weekend, Mayor Rob Power has said “Over the past three years Naas area Councillors have committed significant funds toward Christmas lights and Tidy Town projects throughout the district. Now that the towns have been decorated ahead of the Christmas season, we don’t want election posters bringing humbug to that or dampening the festive look of the town.”

He said: “As the Naas district covers parts of both Kildare North and South I am asking candidates in both constituencies that in the event of any election this month, to avoid erecting posters in towns and village centres where Christmas lights and decorations have been put in place.”

Cllr Power said:“I think it’s clear that the public do not want a pre-Christmas election so the respect voters I would strongly encourage all candidates to carefully consider where they place election posters. I will be working with the Environment section in Kildare County Council to ensure that all posters are erected within the law and that those not conforming with the law are removed immediately.”

He said: "As the prospect of a December election looms over us like the Christmas gift that no one wanted so too does the inevitable decoration of lamp posts with election posters."

Kildare County Council apologises 'profusely' to residents of Dara Park

The worst flooding seen in a Co Kildare estate within 30 years is being met by apologies from Kildare County Council.

Dara Park  was inundated by   sewage flooding into people's gardens and doorways, last week, despite up to €300,000 in council works within the past 12 months.

Residents in Dara Park have been enduring sewage flowing everytime there is heavy rain for the past 30 years.

However, last week they awoke to the worst scene ever  witnessed, according to resident Joe Burke.

Earlier this week he said: "I have never seen it like this.  There are three to four lakes here at the moment. It has gone beyond a joke."

A statement on behalf of Joe Boland Director of Services Water & Environment for Kildare County Council said: "The Council wishes to apologise profusely for the understandable frustration and annoyance arising from this unfortunate event. There is no question of the recent major works not being fit for purpose; rather, the issue here relates to the maintenance of a thrash screen underneath the Iarnrod Eireann culvert. The Council has since agreed a protocol arrangement with Iarnrod Eireann for ongoing access to this area; accordingly, it is not expected that these problems will reoccur. "

He said: "There is a separate problem in Newbridge and not unique to Dara Park, relating to the capacity of the sewerage network.  This will be addressed by Irish Water as part of a separate Capital Scheme (Contract 2A).  The Council did on the urgency of the local committee, remediated a particularly problematic area (beside John Burke's block) and these works were carried out immediately prior to the transition to Irish Water.  It is also possible to resolve a number of obvious and identifiable sewer mis-connections as part of the recent major works. "

County Kildare supported 601 families in the developing world last Xmas with Trócaire gifts’

$

By Kim O'Leary

Irish development agency Trócaire has thanked the people of Kildare for supporting 601 families around the world with Christmas gifts last year.

People in the county spent almost €15,000 on Trócaire gifts last year, which supported families with livestock, school books, water and healthcare in some of the poorest and most isolated places on earth.

The charity said that people from across the country continue to show incredible generosity at Christmas. Since its beginning Trócaire’s gifts campaign has sold nearly 900,000 gifts.

The campaign has raised over €37 million in total for Trócaire’s work to eradicate poverty in more than twenty countries in the developing world.

According to Eamonn Meehan, executive director of Trócaire, “I have seen the difference these gifts make on the ground. It is no exaggeration to say that they are having an immediate, practical impact on families throughout the developing world. For example, millions of people in east Africa are still fighting for survival in the face of drought and crop failures."

He added: "The gift of chicks for families in Kenya and Ethiopia can give them a critical extra source of income from their eggs and it is also a vital source of protein for the family. A simple gift like chickens can help parents to keep their children in school even during difficult months and give them important nutrition.”

Mr Meehan said: “Last year’s donations from Kildare have meant that families are able to earn an income, refugees fleeing conflict are receiving support and people suffering the impacts of drought have access to clean water. We cannot thank the people enough for continuing to add our ethical gifts to their Christmas shopping list."

This year Trócaire’s 10 Christmas gifts from €7 to €250 can be bought online at www.trocaire.org/gifts or by calling 1850 408 408. Gifts are for sale in Veritas stores and selected Easons stores. One4All Trócaire cards are also available in An Post Offices.
