42 towns and villages in Co. Kildare are set to benefit from €76,000 in Government funding to mark 60th anniversary of TidyTowns, according to Fine Gael TD Martin Heydon.

The funding was announced this week by the Minister for Rural & Community Development, Michael Ring TD.

This scheme will allow each local committee to apply for a grant of between €1000 and €4000 to support the work they do.

Deputy Martin Heydon said: “I am delighted to see additional funding being allocated to towns and villages here in Kildare and around the Country. Tidy Towns committees and their network of volunteers carry out amazing work in our communities and this funding is an acknowledgement from our Government of that valuable contribution.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all those who give up their free time to make our communities better places to live.

“Being a volunteer with TidyTowns allows individuals to practice their passion for the good of their community, whether that passion concerns the built environment, landscaping, sustainable living, and local wildlife or organising a litter collection; there is a place for it in TidyTowns.

This funding for 42 TidyTowns organisations here in Kildare, will not just celebrate the last 60 years, but also help us look towards the future.”

“This grant scheme is a once off investment by the Department of Rural and Community Development to mark the 60th anniversary of the TidyTowns competition in 2018 and is in addition to the support provided by the Department on an ongoing basis.”

All applicants, who have applied to enter the competition, in any of the past 3 years will be eligible. Pobal will administer the scheme on behalf of the Department and will contact all eligible groups directly over the coming weeks to facilitate the drawdown of the funding.

For others however, it can be a really difficult and local charitable organisations do a huge amount to help families in need during the season. Our customers have been so generous every year and this year, we have 125 partner causes on board to collect items over the weekend. We would encourage anyone who shops with us to donate whatever they can in store.”

All of the items donated during the appeal in Tesco stores will be given to 125 partner causes from the Tesco surplus food donations programme which is run in partnership with FoodCloud. Kildare soap maker exhibiting at RDS next weekend

A Kildare maker’s soaps which can help warm hands and reduce inflammation will be showcased at Gifted Contemporary Craft and Design Fair in Dublin’s RDS from December 5-10.

Gifted celebrates the best of over 600 Irish designers and makers from fashion to jewellery and beyond – including a host of Kildare exhibitors.

Record-breaking crowds of over 45,000 are expected to generate more than €1m per day in sales at this year’s largest-ever six-day fair.

Kate Park

Kate Park discovered her talent for making soap after her partner’s business crumpled in the recession, resulting in the creation of her Athy-based company Baressential.

“I had to find a way to bring in some income and it had to be creative,” she said.

“I was always interested in botany and the healing properties of plants so weaved those in as well as pure essential oils in my soaps.

“When we expanded Baressential this year, I was out of my comfort zone and it was wobbly but now it is going places and we have two full-time and two part-time employees.

“I have 12 varieties of soap from all my own recipes using ingredients including cocoa butter, avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil and shea butter.

“I also use herbs such as Rosemary, Cayenne Pepper and Cocoa powder.  Your skin absorbs and so paprika can stimulate cell activity and warm hands while turmeric can reduce inflammation.”

Other local makers taking part at the event include Sam and Nessa, LizzieB, Have Ewe Any Wool?, Chris McMorrow, Ros Murphy, Zuzanna Cisowska, Splate and Ria Organics.

Gifted is a celebration of the best Irish designers and makers – people who are truly gifted.

Formerly known as the National Crafts and Design Fair, Gifted includes top cutting-edge designers and makers in Irish fashion, ceramics and glass, jewellery, art and photography, children’s gifts and presents inspired by nature.

The event also includes a Spectacular Christmas Food Emporium featuring over 120 artisan food producers, taste-tempting visitors with the best of the season’s fare.

The growth in Ireland’s vibrant design sector means that Gifted has been expanded by an extra day to become a six-day unique Christmas shopping experience.

“Giving a Gifted gift to your loved ones this Christmas means that they will be receiving a special item straight from the maker,” said organiser Patrick O’Sullivan.

“We have the top cutting-edge designers and makers in Irish fashion, ceramics and glass, jewellery, art and photography, children’s gifts and presents inspired by nature.”

Gifted offers Ireland’s largest Christmas gift shopping experience with prices starting from as little as €5.

In addition, there will be 10% off everything at the Fair on the opening day, Tuesday, December 5.

Gifted Contemporary Craft and Design Fair takes place at the RDS Main Hall from December 5-10 from 10am each day.  Full details and booking can be found at www.giftedfair.ie

Daniel Flynn, Kevin Feely and Eoin Doyle have been nominated for the Kildare Senior Footballer of the Year award ahead of the annual end of year banquet at Ardclough GAA club on December 8.

The three nominations are fairly straightforward after both Feely and Flynn were nominated for All-Star awards following a fine 2017, while captain Eoin Doyle’s performances at centre-back were vital in helping the Lilywhites gain promotion to Division 1 of the National Football League and to reach the Leinster Championship final for the first time since 2009.

County champions Moorefield make up two of the three nominations for the Kildare Senior Club Footballer of the Year, with 18-year-old Mark Dempsey nominated alongside Eanna O’Connor. Dempsey showed great maturity to mark the likes of Niall Kelly and Paddy Brophy in the latter stages of the Joe Mallon SFC, while O’Connor’s importance up front was vital to the Newbridge side’s cause, especially in their Leinster Club SFC quarter-final win over Portlaoise.

Celbridge’s Kevin Flynn has also been nominated after helping his side to the county final, and he has also been rewarded with a call up to the Kildare senior football panel.

Raheens duo David Malone and Paddy Woodgate have been nominated for the Intermediate Footballer of the Year award after helping the Caragh club finally lift the county title. Jack Robinson, a star of the Kildare minor team from 2016, is also nominated thanks to his fine form on Clogherinkoe’s run to the county semi-final.

Two hat-trick heroes from the Tom Cross Junior Football Championship have been nominated for the Junior Footballer of the Year award. Young Jake Corrigan hit 3-5 in Caragh’s semi-final win over Robertstown, but veteran Eoin Kavanagh managed to plunder 3-4 in Ballymore Eustace’s county final win over Corrigan’s Caragh. Captain for Ballymore Eustace, Michael Stewart Byrne, is the third nomination for the award.

Kildare boxer Phelan loses World Championships semi-final but still seals bronze medal

Kildare's Katelynn Phelan has been beaten in the semi-final of the World Youth Boxing Championships in India this afternoon.

The Kildare light-welter will come home with a bronze medal however, having secured that with a fabulous quarter-final win over American Aidyl Cardenas on Wednesday. Katelynn came up against a much tougher opponent in the last four clash in the 64kg category on Friday morning however, and Ekaterina Dynnik of Russia took the bout on a unanimous decision.

It was a generally tight encounter with Phelan landing a number of shots on her Russian counterpart, but the counter punching of Dynnik impressed the judges and she sealed a victory that sets up a gold medal bout with India's Ankushita Boro.

“Katelynn gave it everything and we couldn’t ask for anything more. She’s coming home with a bronze medal and we’re very proud of her,” said Irish team manager Anna Moore.

This is the scene on a road near Straffan where some litter louts dumped a large variety of items, leaving the road almost impassable.

The images were posted to Twitter by a concerned local, who went on to say that she had contacted the litter wardens but nothing had been done about it.

Among the items are a mattress, an old red leather couch, electrical goods, clothing and footwear, which are sprawled across the ditch and spilling onto the middle of the road.

Kildare County Council responded to the concerned individual by requesting that she contact the Department of the Environment and report where the dumping has occurred.

The snow began to fall on the west of Ireland this morning, and right now it is continuing to hit areas of Munster as temperatures remain extremely low outside. It is still not clear whether or not it will hit Kildare, but the temperatures in the county are not set to rise to any more than 6 degrees over the next 24 hours.

Wintry showers will become confined to western and northern counties tonight with clear skies across the bulk of the country. Cold and breezy, lowest temperatures plus 1 to minus 1 degrees, with frost forming and icy stretches on untreated surfaces in spite of the wind.

Cold and windy tomorrow with sunshine and further wintry showers, almost all of them in the north and west. Highest temperatures of 3-6 degrees. Northwesterly winds will be fresh or strong and gusty.

Saturday night will be cold and frosty with lowest tempertures falling to between -2 and +2 degrees. It will be mainly dry with good clear spells in the south and east but showers will continue along Atlantic coastal counties, mainly dry. Westerly winds will be fresh at first but ease by morning.

Sunday will start cold, frosty and bright in the east but it will become cloudy in the west with outbreaks of rain and drizzle there later in the day. Afternoon temperature will rise to between 5 and 8 degrees in a light to moderate southwesterly breeze. Sunday night will become mild and breezy as a band of rain spreads eastwards overnight clearing to showers by morning.

Dumped fire extinguisher helped cause flooding in Newbridge this week - experts

$
0
0

A consultant's report into this week's flooding in parts of Newbridge found it could have been caused by a disused fire extinguisher helping to block a major underground drain.

Around two inches of rain fell across Co Kildare on Wednesday, mostly between 3am and 9am.

Kildare Co Council has insisted that the recent flood-relief works in Dara Park and Lakeside Crescent areas were not to blame for the flooding and are working as planned.

Joe Boland, Director of Services Water & Environment commissioned a 11-page report by Donnachadh O'Brien & Associates Consulting Engineers of Ladytown, Naas which was swiftly completed and published in preliminary form today.

Disused fire extinguisher

This report found that flooding at Dara Park and Lakeside Crescent was caused by debris blockages at a 'trash screen' protecting a culvert (below) in Irish Rail's property.

The report said: "The nature of the debris included, leafs and twigs and other vegetative matter but also plastic, some general rubbish including a disused fire extinguisher that appears to have been disposed of in the culvert."

The report added: "Had this large object not been trapped by the trash screen, it is likely to have caused a severe blockage of the culvert below the railway like in an inaccessible area and therefore the trash screen was performing its function effectively."

The experts found no flooding of houses and the worst-case scenario was water covering half of one driveway in Lakeside Crescent.

The consultants stated that the Dara Park Surface Water Improvement Works are operating as designed.

Apologised

Senior Council official Mr Boland said that the Council wished to apologise profusely for the understandable frustration and annoyance arising from the flooding.

He added: "There is no question of the recent major works not being fit for purpose; rather, the issue here relates to the maintenance of a trash screen underneath the Iarnrod Eireann culvert.

"The Council has since agreed a protocol arrangement with Iarnrod Eireann for ongoing access to this area; accordingly, it is not expected that these problems will reoccur.

"There is a separate problem in Newbridge and not unique to Dara Park, relating to the capacity of the sewerage network. This will be address by Irish Water as part of a separate Capital Scheme (Contract 2A).

"The Council did on the urgency of the local committee, remediated a particularly problematic area (beside John Burke's block) and these works were carried out immediately prior to the transition to Irish Water. It is also possible to resolve a number of obvious and identifiable sewer mis-connections as part of the recent major works."

Food Review: The Priory Restaurant for tasty, wholesome food. Wall’s of Kilgowan serve food early to late, all occasions catered for.

$
0
0

From early morning to late at night, Monday to Saturday, the Priory Restaurant (Wall’s of Kilgowan) offers the most comprehensive range of tasty, wholesome food. The selection of choice here is impressive – from Full Irish Breakfast (€8.95), along with a Mini selection, Omelettes and Eggs Benedict, the Priory offers a daily carvery lunch, with further daily Board Specials, along with snacks, toasties, soups, etc.

There’s an Early Bird Special served from Monday to Saturday, 4pm to 7.30pm – 2 courses at €15.95 or three for €19.95, fantastic value in terms of the produce quality, dish choices and presentation. From the A la Carte, there’s a wide range of Appetisers, Mains including pasta, curry, fish and stir fries, plus a comprehensive selection From the Grill.

Button Garlic Mushrooms

There’s a terrific selection of steaks, for which the Priory is renowned, along with the Priory Mixed Grill, one of the few places you can still get a decent chop and mixed grill ingredients! As for the Desserts and the portion sizes, oh my God, priced at €4.50 each, you could feed a family on two desserts!  And all are clearly marked with ingredient advice, allergens, etc.

A Steak and a Half!

I popped in recently and it was one of the first real wintery, cold evenings. There was a good number of people already dining in the expansive lounge and a private party in the function room. A big coal fire greeted us, and I have to say, put us in a positive mood immediately. Staff were chirpy and informed us of the many menu choices and even carried over the daily board to show us Saturday’s Specials.

Homemade  Duck Spring Rolls

With the winter upon us, we both chose from the Early Bird Menu. My friend chose Deep Fried Button Mushrooms stuffed with Garlic and Chive Cream Cheese (plain option available) whilst I rarely go for Duck, on this occasion I opted for Crispy Duck Spring Rolls with Sweet Chilli Dipping Sauce and a salad dressing. Both were well presented – and I have only one complaint – the portions for the Duck were too generous! I ate only one roll because I know their steaks are equally generous!

The Priory's Homemade 80z burger topped with smoked cheese

For the mains, Anne decided on the Home-made 8oz Beef Burger with gem lettuce, tomato, onion, Caesar sauce and topped with Smoked Applewood Cheese. (We really were in the hunt for comfort food, Slimming World went out the window!). This, Anne stated, was delicious and the smoked flavour of the cheese a lovely touch.

Succulent steak was perfectly cooked.

I opted for a 10oz Sirloin Steak (€7 supplement) with mushrooms and onions with a choice of sauces.  I like a steak cooked medium, good and pink in the centre, juicy and moist. It was cooked to perfection, along with the fried vegetables, I had a bowl of mash and steamed vegetables served but I was too full to finish and barely touched the mash or veg.

Service was excellent, I liked that our server brought both the sauces on the side – often not relayed to the chef! And of course, when we were already fuller than full, we chose a Sticky Toffee Pudding and a good old fashioned Sherry Trifle for Desserts. Neither of us could polish off the Dessert, portions are generous!

A good selection of international wines, €6 per glass, bottles ranged from €22-€26, with full range of coffees available.

Christmas Menu is listed below, with a good selection of mains from traditional Turkey and Ham, Baked Fillet of Sea Bass, Chicken with Chestnut Stuffing, Pan Fried Lamb Rump and of course, the Priory Steak. Three courses for €19.95 or 2 for €16.95, parties and get togethers now booking!

Private Party room available also for everything from Christenings to club celebrations, family parties, etc.

Teresa and Michael Wall run a great establishment, renowned for wholesome, home cooked food. That does not mean a plain, restricted menu – the Priory offers the best of traditional Irish dishes, and popular European food, along with steaks, breakfasts, desserts and daily specials. All tastes and budgets catered for with the emphasis on flavours, presentation and BIG portions!

Located on the old Carlow Road from Kilcullen (on the R448 off the N9), I’d heartily recommend the Priory Restaurant/Wall’s of Kilgowan for delicious food, seven days a week. Bookings on 045 403 355 or email theprioryrestaurant@gmail.com

The bottle bank site in the Tesco Carpark has seen cardboard boxes with empty beer and wine bottles left abandoned on the ground.

Earlier this year, the Tidy Towns Committee in Kildare Town said that the issue was costing points in the annual competition.

The town won the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) national contest last year.
