Dad-of-3 Trevor (42) shot dead as he celebrated his birthday on holidays

A Dublin man who was shot dead yesterday in popular holiday island Majorca is believed to have been killed in a case of mistaken identity.

The completely innocent victim was caught up in a gang-related attack understood to be linked to the Hutch-Kinahan feud.

Trevor O'Neill from Drimnagh in Dublin, had travelled to the Spanish island on Saturday with his partner and three children for a holiday to celebrate his 42nd birthday.

The father of three kids was shot outside a supermarket in Costa de la Calma just after 9pm local time last night.

Attempts to revive Mr O'Neill at the scene failed.

Dublin City Council have issued a statement in honour of their recently deceased colleague.

The statement said: "The management and staff of Dublin City Council are shocked to hear of the tragic death of Trevor O’ Neill in Majorca last night.

"Trevor was a hard working and dedicated employee of Dublin City Council.

"On behalf of the management team, city councillors and staff of Dublin City Council, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to Trevor’s family and friends."

Police are said to be searching for up to three suspects.

Police also believe the shooting was gang-related but Mr O'Neill was not the intended victim.

It is understood that he was not linked to organised crime but may have been talking to a member of the Hutch family at the time.

His partner and children, aged five, seven and 12 were with him when the attack took place.

Police roadblocks were set up in the area to try to catch the killers and an all-ports-warning is also understood to have been issued to stop them leaving the island.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said that they are aware of a shooting in Majorca and are providing consular assistance.

Tensions between Kildare County Council and Macra na Feirme surrounding Shackleton in Athy

Tension is building in Athy regarding the future of the location of Ernest Shackleton's statue.

The statue, created by sculptor,Mark Richards, is due to be placed in Athy on August 31.

However, Macra na Feirme are now objecting to it being placed in Athy town square.

In a meeting on Thursday morning in Athy town square, it was agreed that the sundial outside the town hall would not be temporarily moved as part of the planned Ernest Shackleton celebrations in the town.

A number of people with a vested interest in agriculture attended and made it clear to the public representatives that the monument is of national importance, marking the development of modern Irish agriculture.

Kildare County Council has prioritised the upgrade of Emily Square, Athy, and a public consultation process started on 1 July. The Paul Hogarth Company has been appointed to lead the design process.

Sinn Féin Cllr Thomas Redmond is now concerned about where the Shackleton statue will be placed.

Cllr Redmond said: "I am confused as to where it home will be. I think that it should be in the middle of the river on a plinth."

Ernest Shackleton was born in Kilkea, near Athy, Co. Kildare in 1874, but moved to England when he was just 10 years old. At age 16, he left school to go to sea, qualifying as a Master Mariner. He took part in Scott's 'Discovery' expedition and led his own expedition aboard the 'Nimrod' in 1908, which came within 97 geographical miles of the South Pole, the furthest point south ever reached up to that date, catapulting him to international fame.

In 1914, Shackleton made his third trip to Antarctica with the 'Endurance,' planning to cross the continent via the South Pole. The ship became trapped in the ice, and subsequently sank. Shackleton's crew reached Elephant Island and on Easter Monday 1916, taking five crew members, including fellow Irishmen Tom Crean and Tim McCarthy, Shackleton set sail for the island of South Georgia. In a small lifeboat, the 'James Caird', the six men crossed 1,300 km of ocean in 16 days to reach land. Shackleton, Crean and Frank Worsley were forced to climb a mountain range to the whaling station at Stromness. The remaining men were rescued on 30 August 1916. Not one member of the 'Endurance' crew was lost.

His final expedition on the 'Quest' aimed to circumnavigate the Antarctic continent. On 5 January, 1922, near South Georgia, Ernest Shackleton died of a heart attack. He was buried in Grytviken Cemetery. The physician Alexander Macklin noted in his diary: "I think this is as 'the Boss' would have had it himself, standing lonely in an island far from civilisation, surrounded by stormy tempestuous seas, & in the vicinity of one of his greatest exploits."

Six people have been arrested  after Gardaí  uncovered a suspected human trafficking ring.

Up to 20 people, most of them men, were set free when gardai swooped on a house in Castletown, Co Meath.

The operation was launched after gardai stopped a Romanian man found walking along a road in nearby Nobber because of concerns over his welfare.

The man, who had poor English, told them he was being held against his will at the house.

Gardai secured a warrant and carried out the raid, where they found several people inside.

All of the suspected victims are currently being cared for in Navan and the house remains sealed off.

Their alleged captors, three men and three women, are all from eastern Europe. They were taken to Kells and Ashbourne Garda stations.

Caragh Celtic

Three of four aluminium goalposts belonging to Caragh Celtic FC were taken in a recent robbery.

The club caters for up to 70 schoolkids aged from six up to 12.

Interim club secretary Alistair Conway told KildareNow: "We have only recently discovered that three of our four goal posts have been taken.

"They were being kept in somebody's private yard close to the club.

"We are now facing a new football season with no goal posts and this is both embarrassing and frustrating for the children that wish to play soccer."

"We were hoping to let people know about this and to see if anyone can help us with having them returned."

The club is holding a fundraiser soccer blitz to help buy new goalposts.

Alistair said: "It takes place on Saturday, August 27 t  at 1pm (registration at 12.30pm) in Eire Og. This is open to everyone and not just club members and the cost for this is €5 per child and €10 per family, open to ages under 8 up to under 16."

TD slams insurance companies for 'placing a huge burden' on Kildare people by increasing premiums

$
0
0

A government TD has hit out at the soaring costs of car insurance premiums, saying that the rising prices are preventing young people from being able to get behind the wheel and disrupting their ability to work or attend college.

Responding to recent CSO figures released confirming that car insurance premiums jumped by a massive 38.3% over the past 12 months Brian Stanley TD said;

"The increase of almost 40% for car insurance premiums will cripple ordinary people and families particularly in rural areas of Kildare. To expect people to pay an increase of €200 - €500 on car their insurance is placing a huge burden on people. This is a 70% increase over just 3 years and it is expected to rise by another 15% by the end of 2016. When do we say enough is enough ?"

"People and families in rural areas rely heavily on their cars due to the lack of public transport. I have received many complaints particularly from  younger people who have also been seriously affected. A  large proportion of young people are working in low paid employment but rely on their cars for work. Others will be doing unpaid internships or attending college.

There have been claims and counter claims from both insurers and lawyers over what the actual cause for the massive hike in costs is, but Deputy Stanley is adamant that it is a problem that should be dealt with by utilising the technology at our disposal to advance the insurance sector.

"So far insurance companies are blaming higher claims and fraud for the hikes. While these may be contributing factors they cannot account for such major increases overall. There is also less competition due to the collapse of two insurance companies which we will pick up the tab for. The Irish insurance sector have fallen way behind the advances of technology and should move forward to create a centralised data system, that gives access to all insurers, with details of all motor insurance policies and records of claims.

Sinn Féin have put forward a number of other measures on car insurance which would help reduce costs. These call for the insurance industry to take responsibility and explain such huge increases, which often occur multiple times throughout the year. The party has also called on the Oireachtas Finance Committee to investigate the increases and ensure the Central Bank enforce proper regulation on the industry.

Deputy Stanley concluded by saying; "An investigation must be carried out to get the facts around these hikes. Companies must be forced to justify their reasons for the increases."

Gardaí have arrested a man in his early 20's in connection with a robbery that occurred at a bank at Rosslare Harbour in Wexford this morning.

Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood was spotted in Naas yesterday sipping on coffee

If you were out and about in Naas yesterday afternoon you may have noticed a well known face enjoying a cup of coffee in the sunshine.

Ronnie Wood, the rock and roll legend from the Rolling Stones, perched himself outside of the P.S Coffee Roasters café on Poplar Square in Naas yesterday afternoon and soaked up the small bit of sunshine we enjoyed yesterday.

The singer/songwriter and all-round brilliant musician is a well known face in these parts as he owns the Sandymount House near Naas, while he is also a frequent visitor to the Punchestown Races that take place every April.

There is also the famous tale that has been recounted by many around the town that Wood and his band mate Keith Richards were barred from Fletcher's pub in Naas town centre after starting a sing-song in the notoriously quiet pub years ago. Different variations of that story have grown legs in the intervening years since the alleged incident, but Wood seems to hold no reservations about visiting the town to drink his coffee.

A student achieved 615 points from his five A1 and two A2 grades in the Leaving Cert.

Sean McMahon joined Clongowes six years ago on the Alberto Hurtado Bursary Programme.

Sean from West Dublin is pictured with his parents as he receives his Leaving Certificate results from Martin Wallace, Assistant Headmaster, Clongowes Wood College in the James Joyce Library at Clongowes.

The Alberto Hurtado Bursary Programme is not awarded on academic ability alone is designed to offer financial support for students who would benefit from an education at the Jesuit boarding school.

Students at Clongowes attained an average of 440 points which is well above the national average of 350 points.

One third of the boys reached over 500 points with 17% achieving in excess of 550 points.

Selected from a group of three hundred applicants, Sean is amongst ten recipients of a place at Cambridge to study Physics.

Martin Wallace, Assistant Headmaster at Clongowes said: “I am very happy with the Leaving Cert results achieved by our students this year. I am particularly pleased that our bursary student Sean McMahon will now go on to study Physics at Cambridge – it is a great achievement for him and for all of the teachers at Clongowes that helped him realise his dream.”

Mr. Chris Lumb, Headmaster at Clongowes Wood College said: “I applaud the hard work of our Leaving Certificate students this year.

"Not every student can score the highest points but we do encourage boys at Clongowes to work hard and fulfil their potential – for that reason I am proud of their accomplishments and wish them well in the next steps of their individual journeys.”

Former Kildare midfielder Earley to present a championship restructure proposal to the GAA

$

0

Former Kildare midfielder Dermot Earley is planning on presenting a new football championship structure to Annual Congress next year as the ongoing debate surrounding the summer's football schedule continues to dominate the scene.

Earley is the current president of the Gaelic Players' Association, and despite the GAA announcing their own plans to restructure the All-Ireland series as we know it, Earley and his colleagues are planning on presenting an alternative structure.

The Sarsfields clubman issued a restructuring proposal to the GAA at Annual Congress last year, but it failed to even make the floor for debate. He is undeterred however, and insists that their original plan has been tinkered with sufficiently to please all parties.

"We will look at a proposal, we will present another proposal to Congress. Our own proposal didn't make it to the floor of Congress," said Earley.

"One of the criticisms was that there was more games, they were saying that there was deadrubber games. When we presented it, we said it wasn't the be-all and end-all."

"We were willing to tinker with it a bit more. When you take in everything that has been put before us and everything that is said, hopefully we can find something that is right. If we don't find it, maybe we can combine with others and get the best. But the Championship does need a re-structuring."

He says the main reason that there is a need for change is due to the fact that some teams enjoy a much longer season and more games than others, which can be good for some but unhelpful to teams in Ulster.

"The main thing is, there is an appetite for change. If you took the current GAA structure and presented it now, you'd be laughed at. It's not fair. It's a shorter season for one team, a longer season for another. If you're an Ulster team, you have to play more games to win an All-Ireland than in Munster — that is not fair. It needs to change."

Earley was speaking in Croke Park yesterday after his father, the late Dermot Earley, was inducted to the GAA Hall of Fame.

The stars of Irish racing will be in action at the Curragh this weekend for the Longines Irish Champions Trials Weekend meeting with Order Of St George the headline act on Saturday.

Aidan O’Brien’s latest Ascot Gold Cup winner heads the field for the Group 3 Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger Trial where he will take on the Dermot Weld-trained Charming Kitten, who himself is an eight time winner in America.

Also on Saturday, the Longines Fegentri race will feature lady riders from eight individual countries.

On Sunday the Group 3 Kilfrush Stud Royal Whip Stakes promises to be a fascinating renewal with Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Fascinating Rock taking on Epsom Derby runner-up US Army Ranger while also among the seven declared is the Derrinstown Derby Trial winner, Moonlight Magic, the highly rated Endless Drama for Ger Lyons and Ken Condon’s stable star Success Days.

Aidan O’Brien’s Royal Ascot winners Churchill and Brave Anna head the Group 2 Galileo European Breeders Fund Futurity Stakes and the Group 2 Breast Cancer Research Debutante Stakes respectively. O’Brien will saddle three runners in the Futurity Stakes but face stiff opposition from his son, Joseph, who saddles Arcada and Jim Bolger who has declared Radio Silence. In the Debutante Stakes O’Brien will bid to win the race for an 11th time and is responsible for three of the nine declared runners with Hydrangea and Goodwood winner Rhododendron joining Brave Anna in the field.

Sunday will also see President Michael D. Higgins with a runner on the card as Aimhirgin Lass is declared to run in the concluding Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap. The first of eight races on Sunday is off at 2.15pm and Saturday’s seven race card begins at 1.40pm.
