Co Kildare-born Olympic rider Aoife Clark, who finished 7th in the London Games, has qualified for Rio but hasn't been selected yet.
The UCD graduate (34) from Naas runs a professional eventing training yard in the UK.
Aoife competes in the Tattersalls International Horse Trials in Fairyhouse Co Meath next month.
She said: "Cross-country is one of the most dangerous sports there is. There were 12 riders killed in 2007/2008 alone."
She added: "I wouldn't say I'm reckless, but I am an adrenaline junkie for sure.
"If you go into the start box doubting yourself, then it's time to stop.
"Equally, you don't throw caution to the wind, you prepare and train.
"Still, last year, two of the best riders out there had life-threatening falls. No matter how well you prepare and train, you can't remove danger and luck."
