Kildare TD Fiona O'Loughlin has questioned Minister Shane Ross over the closure of a road in Ballymore Eustace that has not been accessible for the past two years.
The Kildare TD has raised the issue of the L6048 Coughlanstown Road at Ballymore Eustace, which has been closed for the last two years due to subsidence.
She requested a meeting with the Minister for Transport just before summer recess last year.
“Huge disruption has been caused to the residents of Ballymore Eustace and the surrounding area from this road closure. Although many of the residents only live half a mile from the village they have to travel a detour on bad, narrow roads of nine miles. That also has a huge impact on businesses in the area.”
Deputy O’ Loughlin referred this matter to the Minister through Parliamentary Questions throughout the year as the engineering firm Arup indicated the cost of restoring this vital artery would be €3.5 million at a minimum. That would amount to 25% of Kildare County Council's annual fund for roads. Kildare County Council is responsible for 2,528 km of road in the county. It is essential that national funding be provided”.
Deputy O'Loughlin stated that she is being left frustrated by the fact that the meeting has been agreed upon but has not yet taken place.
“I am extremely frustrated that Minister Ross had agreed to meet me in the last Dáil and that meeting has still not taken place. It’s almost a year since the Minister agreed to the meeting which is simply not acceptable. It is vital that the importance of this road rebuilding is echoed to the Minister and It is paramount that we have his support for National Funding to be allocated”, Concluded O’Loughlin.
