Despite a total of 161 post offices being branded as 'likely' to close by An Post following the voluntary redundancy of 161 postmasters around the country, it is expected that just two post offices in county Kildare will be closed.
The west of the country has been the worst affected following the mass voluntary redundancies, which has seriously hit An Post's network of 1,111 post offices nationwide.
There were fears that Kildare would be hit with quite a few closures, but there are just two listed within the county, according to the Irish Independent who have reportedly seen a document detailing the towns around the country that will be affected. The only counties with a lower number of expected closures were Wicklow (1) and Louth (0), while Donegal will be the worst affected as 13 post offices are expected to close within the county. An Post have said an official list will be released at the end of this month.
"Some closures were inevitable in a network that has been largely unchanged for many years," said Debbie Byrne of An Post retail. "We appreciate that these decisions have not been easy for the individual postmasters and we are grateful for their dedication over many years of service in their communities.
