An Irish child (4) who drowned during a Spanish holiday may have wandered into the adult pool where she got into difficulties, according to local reports.

The girl had been previously playing in a small children’s paddling pool in the rented villa in Marbella (similar to pictured.)

The child, whose family are from Straffan, died around 10.30am on Saturday morning.

Her mum was in the pool area at the time and was talking with friends.

It's understood that the child may have wandered from the small children's paddling pool to the adult-sized pool with deeper water when she got into difficulties.

Her other parent, who runs a successful business in Co Kildare, has now flown out to make arrangements to have the child's body flown back home.

Local police were first on the scene and tried to save the youngster’s life using a defibrillator before paramedics arrived.

The death is being treated as accidental by Spanish police.

The villa where the tragedy occurred is located on the road dubbed the Golden Mile which runs from Marbella to the popular resort of Puerto Banus.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to Independent.ie it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
