Call for clampdown on landlords who discriminate against HAP tenants

Councillor Mark Lynch of Sinn Fein has called on Kildare Co Council to write to the Minister for Housing Planning and Local Government about discrimination by some landlords against Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) tenants.

Cllr Lynch also called on the Minister to either resource councils to investigate incidences of this form of discrimination.

The politician also suggested establishing a scheme whereby the Department can investigate and sanction this matter as the current Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) complaints process is not reasonable in this circumstance and is having a knock-on effect on homeless figures.

However the Council said that discrimination on the grounds of accommodation assistance is prohibited by the Equal Status Act 2000-2015.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) is responsible for dealing with complaints.
