Kildare North Labour General Election Candidate Emmet Stagg has congratulated his colleague Cllr. John McGinley on his success in having a motion passed at the July 6th meeting of Maynooth Municipal District, which veto's the attempt by the Council to provide a 60 space car park in The Harbour Field, Maynooth.
The Council stated Mr. Stagg tried to pull a fast one by using the Town Renewal (Health Check) Meetings on Thursday 10th May and Thusday 7th June as a ruse for a Public Consultation on the issue.
They circulated maps of the car park proposal at the Town Renewal Meetings but Mr. Stagg stated that members of the Public who attended the meetings, including Labour Local Area Representative Angela Feeney, told the Council Representatives that under no circumstances should a Car Park be provided in The Harbour Field and instead the area should be developed as a Public Space/Park.
Following on from the Town Renewal Meeting on June 7th Cllr. John McGinley tabled the following motion for discussion at the Maynooth Municipal District Meeting held on July 6th.
He said: 'That on foot of the vote at the Maynooth Health Check Meeting on Thursday 7th June, that The Harbour Field, Maynooth be developed as a public space/park and that there shall be no car park at The Harbour Field, Maynooth, that the council now states categorically that The Harbour Field, Maynooth shall not be used for a car park under any circumstances'.
Council officials argued against a vote being taken but Cllr. John McGinley forced the Motion to a Vote which was passed unanimously by the 7 Councillors present.
Mr. Stagg stated that District Councillors are 'now firmly behind Labour's Campaign to ensure that no Car Park is developed in the Harbour Field and that The Harbour Field is developed as a Public Space/Park.'
In conclusion Kildare North Labour General Election Candidate Emmet Stagg thanked members of the Public for their support for Labour’s Campaign and in particular those who attended the Town Renewal Meetings and strenuously opposed the Car Park Proposal but he warned that the Council may make a further attempt to resurrect the Car Park Proposal. 'If they do we will stop them with the help of the people of Maynooth,' said Mr Stgg.
