Gardai in Kildare Town are investigating two serious assaults within 30 minutes of each other during the Derby Festival in Kildare Town almost two weeks ago.

On Saturday, June 30 (Derby Day) a man was punched in his head and was knocked to the ground in Market Square in the town.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised as a result.

The incident happened soon after jubilant celebrations by hundreds of people following Kildare's famous victory over Mayo at St Conleth's Park which was shown on a big screen in the Market Square (pictured).

Some 30 minutes later, a man in his 30s was struck with a glass on his head during an assault at Firecastle Lane off Market Square, at 10pm.

He was also taken to Naas General Hospital.

A Guns 'n' Roses tribute act was playing on the Main Stage at the time.

The varied and busy Kildare Derby Festival programme was very well supported this year and events were enjoyed by hundreds of locals as well as visitors to the area.
