A wildfire in Alberta, Canada, has ravaged the home of a popular Co Kildare man and his family.
Co Kildare is now rallying behind the Monasterevin man, Allastair Broughall, whose wife, Sherri, gave birth only five weeks ago to Braydon.
Sherri, Allastair, and their three children, ranging in ages from seven to five weeks old, along with Ireland the dog, are now travelling from Alberta to Newfoundland, where Sherri's family reside. This is a 6, 500km journey likely to take up to six days.
Four years ago, Allastair, who was employed in the construction industry, left Monasterevin in search of work.
The family have now been left without any possessions.
A close friend of Allastair, Lyn Ni Mhuireagain, from Monasterevin, said: "At a time when they should be relishing in the enjoyment of their newborn son, they have lost everything. Sherri and the three boys were evacuated South at a moments notice by the army. Allastair was to follow them but the fire soon closed off the southern exit routes from Fort Mc and Allastair had to flee North to safety. The following day he was able to rejoin them as the fires moved on."
On social media, Allastair expressed emotion at rejoining his wife and children. He said:" I just don't know what to say but i finally got south to be with my family and start rebuilding. I was brought up by my parents that no matter what happens keep the head down and keep going forward."
Appeals are now being made for people to help Allastair and his family in a go fund me page, called donations to Allastair and Sherri.
