Kildare hurling manager Joe Quaid was in joyous mood following yesterday's five-point victory over London in the quarter-final of the Christy Ring Cup, labelling it as the best performance his side has produced all year.

It was a fine effort from all players on the day, very much a comprehensive team performance, but the impact of Gerry Keegan was again a notable factor. The Celbridge forward scored nine points, five of which came from play, to follow up fine individual performances against Antrim and Wicklow in which he culminated 20 points.

Quaid, while quick to state that it was the work put in by Keegan's teammates that laid the scores on for him, reserved some special praise for the youngster.

"You watch the match back today. How many times did Gerry get ball from other people? It was the same last week. People were saying that he scored so much, but Gerry didn’t get fouled for all the frees, so I’m not too worried about that," noted Quaid.

"But he is a serious talent. His free-taking, his all round play [is great]. As I’ve always said, generally guys that have that much ability and skill don’t normally work hard, but his work ethic is just unbelievable. He’s a credit to Kildare, and if anybody as a young fella wants to see a role model in how to play the game, that’s your man," he concluded.
