Jack Hume is just two shots behind overnight leader Colm Campbell after getting back on track at the Irish Amateur Open with a stunning round of 65 to close the gap on his Co Down rival.

The round of 65 would have been a record-equaling round on the Royal Dublin par 72 course on any other year, but 17-year-old Marco Penge carded a scintillating round of 64 on Friday to break the course record that had originally been held by Gavin Moynihan.

22-year-old Hume was one of the favourites going into the tournament after enjoying a fine few months of golf, and were it not for a slight wobble on Friday, he would be at the head of the back going into the final day. A level par round of 72 on Friday was sandwiched between two rounds of 65 on Thursday and Saturday, leaving him 14 under for the tournament.

Campbell is two shots further ahead on 16 under, while Penge and German Maximilian Boegel sit three shots further adrift on 11 under par.

Another Naas man, Jonathan Yates, carded a round of 76 yesterday to effectively end his interest in the tournament. He had impressed on Friday with a three under par round of 69, but he finished yesterday 18 shots off the lead on two over par for the tournament.
