Fianna Fail TD Frank O’Rourke wants extra financial resources for Co Kildare from the National Transport Authority.
Only 12 out of a total of 162 transport schemes in the county were successful in securing money in 2016.
‘Mr O'Rourke said: "The 162 different transport projects ranged from works to assist vulnerable road users such as walkers or cyclists, Bus Stop upgrades or installation of new bus stops, Park and Ride Schemes, Traffic Signal improvements and junction improvements.
‘Only 12 projects successful. The 12 include, completion of the Bus Hub in Naas, Design of Cycle Track around Naas, Kill and Johnstown, junction upgrade to improve access to Kill school, cycle track adjacent to Pipers Hill and a new Bus Stop on the Newbridge Road at Jigginstown."
The Celbridge-based TD added: "Providing better access to public transport, safer routes for cyclists, safer routes to schools and better traffic management are vital as we try and encourage more and more to use public transport or more sustainable modes of transport. Most accidents involving vulnerable road users occur at junctions in urban areas where they compete for road space and priority with cars and trucks. We must work to minimise the risk for these road users.’
"I am delighted that some of the projects that I have campaigned for on behalf of various communities are included on this year’s list, however, more resources are required. I will continue to raise the issue with the National Transport Authority and fight for additional resources in the future."
